Is this breastfeeding at home acceptable?

yikes! No, it’s not appropriate to take off your shirt in front of a total stranger!
When my DS was first born I had really sore nipples and any fabric chafed them so I didn’t put on a shirt at all for about 2 weeks… BUT the only people visiting were my Mom and sister!

OP’s profile says she’s female.

Somehow, this thread reminds me of the Mexican guys who see nothing unusual about walking into the bathroom and beginning to pee without closing the door, regardless of how many women are in view. (and the Mexican cleaning ladies who will walk into the men’s room and mop around the men while they’re “doing their business”…)

OP said she breastfed her child until 18 months… so I’m pretty sure she’s female… 😉

I agree with the others here… there are certain things that are fine in your own home… but limits need to be set… especially when guests are visiting!

To all who asked, I am a Woman. She is not a stranger, at the time we had known each other for a couple months. As another poster said, I will probably be visiting her outside** her house from now on. I found out that her mother is from France.

I did not change the title.

I do not know who did or why, I would like to know.

Thanks everybody

First, let me say that, only a mod could have changed the title. I did not see the original, but I assume that someone suggested to the mod to change it; this sometimes happens. No harm, no foul.

Now, about this woman:http://bestsmileys.com/surprised/2.gif That is just totally bizarre, and extremely rude to do when you are there…especially with no warning!!

I did catch the part where you said you nursed your own children, so I knew you are a woman, but, now that the question has been raised–Does she do this when a:eek: male friend drops over? If your DH were:bigyikes: with you? Because that would be beyond rude.

It sounds like she has:dts: no sense of boundaries. Really, I mean, if someone wants to do that when alone, that is one thing. Forcing the situation on you? Or any other person who visits?:nope: Bad manners, lack of modesty, whatever…It’s just…weird. (Funny how that seems to be where we all went–straight to “weird”, I mean…).

This is totally unacceptable in our culture, but perhaps she was raised that way. I’ve heard that in Europe most women don’t wear a top at the beach. You said the mother was from France?

No, my dh was not there and yes, her mother is (or was) from France.

So I’m sitting here thinking “Wow, that is STRANGE behavior!” With my top off. Nursing my ten month old. 😃 😛 😃

BUT I’ll have you know I am upstairs, in my room, with the door closed. I simply took off my green uber-fuzzy mohair sweater because it’s too hot and too furry for breastfeeding comfortably. I typically only read/post the board while nursing anyway.

Another Captain Obvious question that begs to be asked:

Did she asked you if you mind if she goes topless while you are there?

I just can’t imagine making one of my friends/acquaintances that uncomfortable in my home.

I’m wondering about the effect on her children.

Also, I tried nursing two at once, but had to quit-- lack of stamina,I guess. Just wore me out. I can’t imagine nursing three. And I think a 4 year old is too old to nurse.

My rule was, when the child can say “Nurse!” and pull at your shirt, (especially in church or the grocery store), hand him a glass of milk.

But what kind of example is she setting for her kids? I’m not a psychologist, but seems as if I’ve heard that too much parental nudity can be too intense for young children.

I don’t know how much effect parental nudity can have on children, but I have seen a video on YouTube about a mother in England who breastfeeds her 7 year old daughter.

Definitely weird and inappropriate, although I suppose you are in her home. But I’m wondering about the other 3 children who are not being breastfed. How old are they? Do they also go around nude? Does she go topless infront of them?

I personally think this seems like a very serious case of a lack of boundaries where modesty and privacy are concerned. And to put it lightly, I think this cannot be good for the older children in this family. Maybe if she was living in a tribal culture where people regularly walked around topless, but considering she doesn’t, this makes me very uncomfortable.

I suppose there are some kids who are in homes like this who end up well adjusted. I also think that a situation like this carries a larger than normal chance of the children not being taught healthy boundaries, which makes them at a much higher risk for being taken advantage of or abused.

I’m not talking about breastfeeding a 4yo. It’s past my comfort level, but I wouldn’t judge another mom for that decision. It’s the nudity of mixed sexes at too old of an age (I’m guessing there are 3 older than 4, since she has 6 kids). And the clulessness about showing off your body (whether or not you think it’s not sexual) to just anyone who happens to be in your house.
