You’re okay. You just need to relax a little. Take things a little more slowly. If you were willing to submit yourself to the authority of the Church first and foremost, then you wouldn’t even be all that concerned, although I realize simply saying “I’ll submit myself and my judgment to Holy Mother Church!” isn’t just going to work like turning on a light.
Do you have a copy of Protagoras available to you? If not, google it, and read the first few pages between Socrates and Hippocrates, on whether or not Hippocrates should be going off to Protagoras.
Socrates shows him in beautiful detail why the nourishment of the soul (knowledge) is of vastly greater import than the nourishment of the body (food), and yet, people treat them just the opposite! They regard carefully their food and yet intake all sorts of knowledge without knowing whether it’s good or not! Hippocrates needs a wise teacher like Socrates to distinguish between good and bad.
Similarly, we can trust in the Church as analogous (and even far surpassing) Socrates, and ourselves as young, naive Hippocrates, always having fluctuating opinions, very vain and self-conceited, thinking that we know best, as though the many lines of Scripture which preach against us (do not be wise in your own eyes, there is a way that seems good to a man but its end is the way of death, there was no king in Israel in those days and each man did what was good according to his own eyes) do not actually refer to us, but to some amorphous blob we call “other people.”
Regards the opinion that faith should be private. That is incorrect. It is not even sufficient to live our faith without ever witnessing to it by mouth, either. From the Manual of Indulgences
“…nor is it sufficient that they practice the apostolate of good example. The purpose for which they are established, the purpose for which they are present, is to proclaim Christ to their non-Christian fellow citizens by word and deed and to help them to receive Christ fully.” Emphasis mine.
