So, at work today a customer asked me if I could turn on some arcade games for his kid… I responded by checking with my manager. My manager asked me if I knew how to turn them on, and when I replied that I didn’t, he said, “Just tell him no, the games are on a timer, then.” I said, “Are you sure, could you just tell me how to turn them on?” He replied again, “No, just say they’re on a timer.”

So I went back out to the customer, and told him that “we can’t turn them on.” When he asked why, I said, “My manager said they’re on a timer.” And then, after a momentary pause, I added, “That’s what he [my manager] told me to tell you.”

So, obviously my manager lied, but did I sin? And if I did, is it mortal/venial? I’m leaning towards no sin at all, or at most, venial (I didn’t mean to do anything wrong, I wasn’t sure what to do). I didn’t technically tell a falsehood, did I? I didn’t say “The machines are on a timer,” but “My manager said the machines are on a timer.”

Anyways, thanks in advance for everyone’s advice 🙂

I would say no sin was committed. However, if you feel guilty about it should can confess it.

You didn’t know how to turn them on, and told the customer what the manager told you to tell them which is no, they are on a timer. I am not sure with what you stated why you thought he lied but you just did what he told you, and you didn’t go around his back and turn the games on. I really wouldn’t worry about that you think you lied. You did what you were told to do by the boss and for whatever reason, he didn’t want the games turned on. Maybe this was his way of not turning on the arcades and getting out of it with the customer for whatever reason,
(close to closing time, the games needed fixing, a troublesome customer etc). look at this a temporary job and don’t sweat the small stuff.

Yes definately, dont try to convince yourself it is not a sin! You knew the truth in this situation yet you perverted it to please your manager!! Do not fear your manger, you should Fear God and his punishment moreso! If your manager is going to keep pressuring you to sin like this, then leave this job and find another one! Jesus said:“If your right arm causes you to sin cut it off and throw it away. It is better to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell”.

The games do not work on a timer, and I know that. So that’s how I know he lied. My question was, did I technically lie too, or did I lawfully evade it somehow? As usual, the answers on this forum have been split 😛

I remember this when my older brother had a girl phone him when we were younger, I answered it and he said to me to say he wasn’t in.

Just following orders but next time, you tell her you are not in.

😛

I understand, did you ask your boss why he wanted you to tell the customer that they were on a timer when they weren’t or why he might have not wanted the games on? You were telling them what he wanted you to say and even told the customer that is what the boss told you to say. I think that is the struggle on CAF when people post questions about "is this a sin?’ and they get different answers because it is not so clear cut. As always, it is best to go to a priest and discuss it with him. I was looking at this more as a communication issues and how to improve communication with the boss in maybe ask him why he would want to say something that wasn’t true etc. You might look as this as a learning experience for yourself in case this comes up again either with this guy or the next boss.

You did not lie. You told the customer what your manager said and told him your manager told you to say it. The ball is in your manager’s court.
