I deal with scrupulosity so sometimes I worry if I’ve consented to a sin, etc.

But recently, I did a sin that was definitely mortal 😦 it was done deliberately, with TOTAL free will, knowledge, and even awareness of God trying to help me avoid the sin. I repented of it but I can’t describe how painful it was after the sin. I am so glad and grateful that God gave me repentance, because I don’t deserve it at all. 😦 He is so merciful to us.

But I don’t understand, is this a mortal sin, or is it even *worse *than that? because I have honestly never felt so horrible in my life, and I knew how greatly I offended God. 😦 is something so willful, so deliberate, - forgiveable?

well this would always be a reminder to avoid sin

If it isn’t totally willful and knowing, it isn’t a mortal sin at all. Do you think God made it so easy to kill yourself as that, especially to kill yourself eternally?

As for your emotional understanding of our situation, you are coming to understand the mercy under which we all operate, and the unspeakable magnificence of the victory Christ won by His Cross.

Not only did Christ win your utter freedom from every accusation that the Accuser could demand, but he won that freedom for every sinner who committed every sin since the first sin was committed!

*Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:

“Now have salvation and power come, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed.

For the accuser of our brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and night.

They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; love for life did not deter them from death. Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them. But woe to you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in great fury, for he knows he has but a short time.”* Rev. 12: 7-12

This Holy Scripture is not a cause for fear, but a cause for encouragement and rejoicing! The Blood of the Lamb will be utterly victorious!

We also don’t know, based on the OP’s post, if it was grave matter. Someone with OCD may be amplifying their perception of the gravity of the sin from what it really is. If it isn’t grave matter, it isn’t mortal sin. If it isn’t done with full knowledge, it isn’t mortal sin. If it isn’t done with full consent, it isn’t mortal sin.

But since this isn’t a confessional, and I most certainly don’t want the OP to spill out what the sin actually was, and since this really should be a private matter, I strongly urge as I do in all these sorts of cases, to seek out sacramental confession and discuss this with the priest in the confessional.

Even for venial sin, the sacrament is still highly effective.

Thanks for the replies… to answer the question, yes it was an entirely free choice, and the reason I made it is because I dwelt too long on the temptation and then fully accepted it, and more than once. I’d say it was also grave matter. 😦 I’ll definitely be confessing this! I just hope it’s forgiveable 🙂 (and I do believe that, I am trying to). It’s one of the worst things that’s ever happened to me.

I think I did come to a greater understanding of God’s mercy. I really couldn’t believe that He would still forgive me after everything. Today I finally felt like I’m back with Him. A part of the sin involved presuming upon God’s mercy, which is horrible, when I thought about what I actually did by that I was shocked. It’s like God rescues us, and then we use His mercy as an excuse to hurt Him further 😦 ugh… I never want to sin by presumption again.
I definitely messed up but God has given me a greater resolution to sin no more.

is presumption upon God’s mercy forgiveable too? (I just need to check).

Tell you, is cases of scrupulous, when in doubt, it is not a mortal sin, OK?
And you are not able to judge all that, (no one is judge in one’s own tribunal!) only God is.
You’re definitely on the way of pleasing God, on the endeavor to do good, I do not think that is a mortal sin. Suppose it is, confess, do penance and FORGET it. It’s gone, it’s past, the pst never comes back again, look with hope into the future.

And please, do not repeat all this self-inflicting punishment. Either is or is not. If not, all is OK. IF yes, ask for forgiveness and confess do penance and FORGET. Do now dewll in all those self-destructive thoughts…

The regret for your sins is really great. Jesus´mercy will prevail. You´ve learned a great lesson in this. It will be a good confession. God bless:thumbsup:👍👍

If what you did was a sin of grave matter and you knew that but did it anyway then that is a mortal sin.

Checklist for forgiveness of any sin:
  1. Are you repentant?
  2. Are you breathing?
If you answered “yes” to both of those questions, then your sin can be forgiven.👍

Fulton Sheen told a story about St. John Vianney that illustrates this:

A woman came to him distraught, saying “My husband has just fallen off a bridge and drowned. He had not been to the Sacraments or mass for twenty years, and I fear his soul is lost.” St. John looked at the woman, smiled and said “Madame, remember – there is a short distance between the bridge and the water.”

Yes, I understand that… in this case there is no doubt at all. =( I was just wondering here if it is forgiveable, and if indeed this is what being in mortal sin is like.

I will confess it =) but sadly it does seem like a mortal sin to me, not in a scrupulous “what if” way, but for certain.
The regret for your sins is really great. Jesus´mercy will prevail. You´ve learned a great lesson in this. It will be a good confession. God bless:thumbsup:👍👍
I hope so 🙂
Yes, presumption of God’s mercy is forgiveable also.
thank you! that is what I was wondering. 🙂

thanks for sharing that 🙂 yes I did repent, so now all I need is to confess.

sometimes I wish I could have known St John Vianney and I would have probably asked him many questions =p

Dear Christian Friend (O.P.):

YES, as long as you sincerely regret what you did,
your sin is forgivable, even if you presumed on God’s mercy,
as long as you have remorse for having done so, and YOU DEFINITELY DO.

So go to confession A.S.A.P.
DO NOT WORRY ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE “PERFECT” CONTRITION.
PERFECT contrition is wonderful, but even if your contrition is very IMperfect,
the sacrament of confession makes up for that, and your sin(s) WILL be forgiven.
Then do your assigned penance,
and then try to do something concrete to “make up” for what you did.
If you stole something, you DON’T have to go to the cops,
nor do you have to (always) go directly to the person you stole FROM,
but you should (in such a hypothetical case) try to make it up to them
to the best of your ABILITY. God knows your heart and that you want to make
it right, even if you are broke and can’t.
For example, you could make a small donation, or a weekly small donation,
to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society which helps people in great need.
And FORGIVE YOURSELF,
because if you are scrupulous about past sins (and so am I),
the Devil will attack your conscience like crazy. So pray to God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), to Mary, to Joseph, to Saint Faustina, St. Jude, and St. Dismas
and St. Mary Magdalene (just my suggestions).
God bless you richly!!!
Love to you,
Jaypeeto4
