Is this something a Catholic should support?

Congress to Restore Overseas Abortion Funding Under “Family Planning” Ruse

There seems to be a lot of talk about what is and what is not the right kind of family planning. Is it reasonable to assume that when secular pro-life groups like this seems to be talk about the right kind of family planning they are obviously saying abortion has no place, but that they are not necessarily condemning artificial contraception? Could a Catholic in good conscience support what maybe anti-abortion but also pro artificial contraception?

(I may be completely wrong about the pro artificial contraception part, so maybe someone with a more in depth knowledge of the issues in the link could comment on that)

I am sorry, I don’t think I made myself clear. I am not talking about supporting abortion in any way whatsoever. All I am asking is if it is okay to support a pro-life group if it is discovered that they endorse artificial contraception as an alternative to abortion?

The link I included discusses amending family planning funding stuff I think to make abortion not included but I don’t think it really says anything about the question of funding artificial contraception. So I was wondering what a Catholic should do here? Is it still okay to support this particular pro-life effort?

How is artificial contraception an alternative to abortion?

Putting aside the fact that some contraceptive methods actually can act as abortifacents, abortion occurs after contraception. So in essense we are saying that to kill the baby is an acceptable course of action if contraception fails.

I agree. I do not support artificial contraception at all. But I guess what I am asking is if it would be okay to support a pro-life group who does maybe support artificial contraception? Maybe under the principle of double effect or something? I am not saying that the group I linked above does support AC, but I would just like to know for future reference.

I think some pro-lifers view artificial contraception maybe not as an alternative to abortion, but as a good way of avoiding pregnancy and therfore abortion. This is of course erroneous reasoning because we know that artificial contraception in addition to being gravely immoral in its own right, also engenders other sins because it creates a contraceptive mentality that is just a precursor to claiming the “need” and “right” to an abortion.

There is a tendency for some groups to use abortion as a stalking horse, “If we do such-and-such it will reduce abortion.” Of course their goal is to do such-and-such, not to affect abortion in any way. It’s a very cynical tactic.

The answer is no.

There are many pro-life groups that are Catholic, and do not endorse contraception in any way.

Support one of those.
