Is this the beginning of the end for communion in the hand?

May very well be. Take it up with Archbishop Ranjith.

Oh, wait, no I forgot. You know better than the Congregation and its secretary. Why don’t you just send 'em an email and tell them to call off this whole investigation.

Gotta remind them that the buck stops with Eilish
What do you think?

I know what it looks like:

Receive from HC from a priest or deacon
the world is fine and I will show all the reverence
I can and receive on the tongue

Receive from an EMHC
who cares - receive in the hand - it is not worth
the reverence now

As of this very moment - does the Church say it is a less reverent form of distribution?
People in the Church do. They’re not required to have every belief be backed by a dogmatic teaching.

You want the Congregation to officially declare this? Haha. Be careful what you wish for.

Good day.

What about the unconsecrated tongues of the laity?
And the stomach, I suppose? What a great argument.

Now, you might realize that having food enter the mouth, be consumed, and enter the system is the very definition of eating. Holding the food by hand is not part of the definition. Certainly it is not sinful to eat the Host, but touching it unnecessarily with unconsecrated hands is less reverent than eating directly.

You will want to read St. Aquinas on this.

As we have seen on this forum we can’t/should not take personal opinion as anything more than that.

Yeah… and this is an opinion. An opinion backed by sound theology. As such, we’re justified in holding it, and in proclaiming it if we so wish.

As long as we don’t say that the Church has infallibly declared it, we’re not overstepping the boundaries of having an opinion.

Does the Blessed Sacrament deserve anything other than the form of reverence we prefer?

If we believe receiving on the tongue is the most reverent - barring widespread issues of contagious disease - should we skip that practice?

It is still simply an opinion nothing more.

It is so very sad that our Holy Mother Church has such disparate beliefs among its members, this is truly a trial we are undergoing.
It is sad. For the life of me, I can’t understand why any clergy or laity would see anything negative in someone showing that level of respect for the Blessed Sacrament.

We approach the Altar of God to honor Christ’s instuctions He revealed at The Last Supper. The Priest fullfills this will of Christ by administering the Sacrament of Holy Communion, with consecrated hands, to the faithful through the invisible border that defines the Sanctuary.

This isn’t to be taken lightly by the faithful. Convenience should not factor in it at all. Time should mean nothing.

Does having an EMHC take the Blessed Sacrament out of the Sanctuary build faith or retain reverence ? No, it is done to save time. And a 35 minute Mass is more “convenient” than an hour long one. Does this please God ? Does it build faith ? Of course not. It only serves to make it “easier” to be a catholic. It puts mundane needs ahead of reverence.

And EMHC’s at a weekday Mass with 30 people in the pews ?
Why ?

While we’re at it, what about lectors who don’t have the reading skills and speech skills that should be required to recite the readings and lead the faithful in prayer ? Mispronunciation, added words, skipping words, coming to Mass unprepared and reciting the wrong readings for the day’s Mass ? Why can’t someone tell them they might do well to find another form of stewardship ? Because we may offend them ? What about God ? How might He feel about someone stumbling through the readings because they are not mindful of the importance of the position of lector ? One who doesn’t bother to prepare.

It’s sad.

The Blessed Sacrament deserves the most reverence we can muster. It goes further than what we prefer. It’s what God prefers.

Kneeling, in the hand, is more reverent than standing, in the hand.
Kneeling, on the tongue, is more reverent than kneeling, in the hand.

Does that/should that change if we receive from a lay person vs clergy?

I agree, and retract my earlier statement. Even if receiving from an EMHC (after being baptized), I would receive on the tongue. However, my most preferred action would be to not receive at all from an EMHC.

Wow… no wonder this thread is running in a circle.

You are Catholic, right?

…reverence we prefer? That about says it all. No wonder more than half the Catholics don’t even believe in the Real Presence. They have this same understanding.

I checked the profile. Yes he is Catholic. And as far as the circle, he is only completing the back half of the arc.

Opting between receiving on the tongue and receiving in the hand is personal preference - the Church has not declared one reverent and and the other not reverent.

DID YOU NOTICE some say they what is in their opinion a ‘more’ reverent form if receiving from clergy than if receiving from a layperson? Maybe if you were not into baiting me you would have seen this …
