Just because something is immoral doesn’t mean we should make a law against it.
This was the position of Father Robert F. Drinan, who supported Bill Clinton when he vetoed the bill banning partial birth abortions. As a congressman, Father Drinan had a 100% voting record in favor of a woman’s right to have an abortion.
 
It’s a good principled. It’s just that if you aren’t going to have laws against murder then why have any laws.
 
Well, unfortunately there has been a lot of corruption in the Catholic church in Ireland. All the sexual abuse, the Tuam babies, etc. All this has probably caused the public to openly disdain and/or be indifferent to Church teaching. People just cannot or will not separate individual self-proclaimed Catholics from the Catholic Church. So if Catholic individuals do evil, then the entire Church is evil. That’s how weak human nature sees it.

And it seems to me that if the Church does ‘die’ in Ireland, it will partly be the Church’s own fault.
