Is This What Protestantism Is Really About??

You’ve yet to answer questions about the sources of your quotes - which discredits you, OneFalseCathApos.
This is not charitable…and not very clever.
To the best of my knowledge, it is either incorrectly attributed to Luther by someone or someplace that OTCA saw it, or it is a hoax.
It doesn’t sound like Luther, it really doesn’t, not that I’m extensive on all things Luther, but that, ‘Personal Saviour,’ line sounds FAR too modern.
…Obviously, committing muder and fornication thousands of times a day isn’t possible…
THAT, my dear sir, sounds like a challange!

OneTrueCathApos, where in Luther’s works has he said the Personal Saviour thing?

Just for the record, I have searched the entire 54 volumes of Luther’s Works (I have it on CD) and the term “personal savior” appears nowhere within that corpus. At least we have eliminated that as a source.

Is there anything that is along the lines of personal saviour, in any way? Could it be a translation issue?

I checked both spellings – nothing in either one. My first choice was “savior” as I have the American edition of Luther’s Works. The word in both forms exists in the database, but not in conjunction with “personal.”

No, but, what I am saying is there something like, “Jesus is your savior and if you personally do what is right by His Commandments…,” anything like that where the two words could be said in the same breath or, “Each person must obey Jesus and Jesus alone as He is the One Who saves”? Anything like that that you came across?

I haven’t come across anything like that, although to search all the possibilities would take quite some time. In all my study of Luther, I don’t recall ever having heard anything of this sort from him.

Today Germany remains predominantly Lutheran.
🙂
As of 2006, 30.5% of Germany is Lutheran, 31% Catholic. Non-religious about 25%. The rest are other protestants, and other religions. Certainly not “predominently Lutheran”.

😦 That is truly sad. I thought it was more 50% Lutheran, 45% Catholic, 5% other. That 25% is a VERY big number, especially since that leaves, 13.5% Other Religious.😦

They probably have more immigrants now. Not such a homogeneous population as they used to have.

Not necessarily.

I believe Lutheranism was founded by Martin Luther. Lutheranism spread throughout Germany and Scandinavia, and the Protestant movement in various form could soon be found throughout Europe.
Your Lutheran denomination is the oldest Protestant denomination out there.
Those who followed Luther’s teachings were called “Lutherans” by their own opponents and they accepted the name for themselves.
Today Germany remains predominantly Lutheran. In Finland alone, 81% are members of The Evangelical Lutheran church of Finland.
Lutheran beliefs are expressed in numerous historical Lutheran confessions, most of which were penned by Luther himself.
These confessions have been collected into the Book of Concord, which is regarded as an authority for Doctrine and practice by all Lutherans.
🙂
Some of this is true and, ironically, disputes what you have said earlier. For example, we would have no confessional documents if we believed in “personal interpretation” as the term is currently
used in American “evangelicalism”. There would be no need for any document such as our confessions if we did. Also, to be ordained you must believe our doctrines, certainly no broad clergy ordination here, as you contend.

As to your other points, I’ll leave to find find references in the confessions to support them. Good luck with that.

The saddest part of that nonreligious number is the thought in my head that some might be a reaction to the kinds of back and forth attacks between us Christians, such as we’ve witnessed on this thread. If the verbal battles between Lutherans and Catholics have turned people away from the faith, well, we all should go to confession.

Lutheran church membership in Europe and North America has declined according to the Geneva-Based Lutheran World Federation. In North America, Lutheran churches lost 84,179 members.

Luther said “Be a sinner”

Luther said “Doing good is more dangerous than sinning”

Luther said “There is no free will”

Luther said “The individual Christian is subject to no authority”

Luther said “Peasants deserve their harsh treatment”

Luther said “Polygamy is permissable”

Luther said “The bible could use some improvement”

Luther said “persecute the Jewish people”

As I said before, is this what Protestanism is really about?

What is your point of all this? What is your goal? You've received very little support from Catholic members here, not because of your Catholicism, or because they agree with Luther, but because of the tone of your attack.

I find your style of posting, whether done by a Catholic or a noncatholic, to be counter to Christ's wish that we be in unity. And be sure I have on here challenged protestants who use your attack-style posting, as others can attest to if they choose.

If you wish to discuss and dialogue in charity and Christian love the important differences between our faith traditions, and celebrate with joy our agreements, I am a willing participant. I will admit when I'm wrong, defend Catholicism when it is right, and I always try to seek common ground.

Hello Jon,

Just answering your post about the numbers in Europe and abroad. This thread is a discussion about Protestanism, therefore we are discussing the one man who brought about the Reformation for all of the Protestant religions. I think it is appropriate to speak about him, after all, he is extremely important, don’t ya think? 🙂

This is disgusting. You make Jack Chick look like a rank amateur. I am done with you.

To my friends here at CAF, I apologize for this post.

To be fair. This is not what protestantism is to 99.9% of the Protestants. Maybe there are some ultra extremists that would say such things, perhaps in a rhetorical attempt to prove the detachment of works from salvation (a doctrinal point I do not accept). But the protestant reformation was not about an excuse for murder and debauchery. Tt its core, it was a movement to restore a “pure” form of christianity. I’m not saying I agree with it, or that it was even a “good thing.” I believe it was a bad action made with good intentions. But to be honest in this debate I must concede (or at least give the benefit of the doubt to them) that the reformers, including Luther, were sincere and pious men who were seeking to do God’s will apart from the Catholic Church. On average they were no better or worse than the Catholics of the day when it came to personal piety and the avoidance of sin.

Peace,
-Robert
