Is this woman demonic, and how do I protect myself?

I am a cradle Catholic and I am currently practicing. 11 months ago, I was not attending mass like I should have, and I am afraid this made me spiritually vulnerable. I have since gone to confession, talked to the priest about me not going to mass, and resolved my conscerns about my catholic faith and going to mass. I am also going to consult a priest about my question that i am posting here as well because I am conscerned about my well-being.

I know a Brazilian woman who goes to a non-denominational Christian church. We met 11 months ago while I was experiencing serious difficulty in my marriage. She wanted to give me religious counsel, and since I felt so alone and overwhelmed, I agreed. I began occasionally spending week-ends sleeping over at her house and discussing my problems with her and her husband. Also, being in a house full of kids was a nice distraction.

Ok, so during that time, I had some strange experiences at their house, but I dismissed them at that time because I thought I was crazy. But now, 11 months later and recognizing that this woman has been spiritually abusive to me (telling me it was my fault that my husband had manic episodes and was violent towards me because I married him 3 years ago without God’s permission, that I have to do everything she tells me or else my heart is evil), I am reconsidering my interpretation of the strange goings-on.

Basically, 11 months ago, I heard voices while I was sleeping over in their basement guest room. I thought I was losing it, and I just prayed that God would preserve my sanity, but I don’t believe it’s possible at all that I could have hallucinated any of the voices I heard, because the voices spoke in portuguese, and I do not speak portuguese. The voices sounded like this woman and her husband.

I remember some of what the voices said. The woman’s voice said “Nao catolic Jesus.” I looked it up on google translate, and the meaning is disturbing. It means “Catholicism is not Jesus.”

So what am I looking at here, as far as my own spiritual safety? I am having nothing further to do with this woman anymore. But I am afraid to even associate with any of the other people she knows, although some of the other non-denominal christian brazilians seemed caring and genuine, and this is a lonely world, I don’t want to throw out the baby with the bath water here. But if this woman is demonic, even more than just cutting myself off from association with her, or even people she know, is this enough to protect me? Am I cursed by her? Can she put an evil mojo on my life? I already am suffering health problems like rapid pulse due to the stress.

Also, if this woman is demonic, does that mean that all the people at that church are cult-members? Should I just have nothing more to do with any of them?

P.S. My husband is beginning psychiatric evaluation and treatment with a Harvard-trained Psychiatrist with 25 years experience and who specializes in bi-polar. He starts in January, and I am going away for that month to visit my sister and little nephews.

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Jennifer

It’s quite possible that what you are describing is a manifestation of some sorts. Perhaps she is possessed.

At the same time, it’s quite possible that what you are describing is not a manifestation at all. Perhaps those voices you heard were the woman and her husband whispering outside your door, which is scary regardless. Perhaps a recording was being played through a speaker pointed at your room or even in it, at very low volume. Could that be it? Perhaps that woman is just being fed drivel by her heretical church and she’s just spouting it at you due to you being vulnerable and her being naïve. Perhaps your husband just has a mental condition, a hypothesis you seem to favor.

I am not going to make a definite judgement, but you see what judgement I favor with the information given. Has anything supernatural actually happened, except for the voices? Have they recurred? Has anything, no matter how inconsequentially small, happened that could be attributed to the supernatural? Be real here.

Regardless, you need to speak about these things quite seriously with your priest. If you feel something supernatural has happened, definitely go talk to a priest. Like, in the morning. As soon as possible. Call the parish office and see when the earliest you can meet him is. Tell them it is urgent and they will understand. If you can’t get in there, call another parish. You get the idea.

If I were you I’d first go to my priest and have confession, and ask for a blessing. I’d avoid her and her husband, and do a lot of prayer. I wouldn’t avoid all of the members of that group of people, but at the same time I’d be wary. I’d also start arming myself so to speak, by beginning the day with prayer as much as possible.

Good advice above, but if they are a “group” yes I would not associate with them. Praying the Rosary daily is a great strengthening practice and would certainly be good. I pray your husband will do well with treatment.

Hi Jenny,

Great, it is good that you open up! Relax, I definitely don’t think that a woman can put a curse or an evil mojo on you! Do you want to get rid of that believe or are you certain of it? Have you talked to a priest in the meantime? Are you able to sleep or to concentrate or has this been a problem before? You mentioned other health problems, what are these? Have you heard voices also in other circumstances? Why don’t you consult a psychiatrist, particularly if you can’t rid of that nagging believe or continue to stay that anxious. Medication will very likely be able to help you with your anxiety and your worries, and you can also consult a psychologist or therapist to get over that stress. All the best to you!

the likelihood of a supernatural origin of the voices is pretty remote. I suggest it is more likely that you heard the couple talking in Portuguese. The cold air return ducts in the basement likely carried their voices.

No she cannot put “evil mojo” on you. That is superstitious.

Forget about this woman. You have returned to the faith and been to confession. You are going to drive yourself crazy by believing she has power over you. She does not.

Spot on.

Stay away from people that make you feel uncomfortable.
This. I know we’re supposed to be patient with difficult people, but that doesn’t mean we’re supposed to be doormats to every person whose behavior is suspicious or potentially harmful. I’d be getting as far away from this person as possible, if it were me.

Are you kidding me? There is a 99.9 percent chance that there is NOTHING SPOOKY GOING ON.

This is such a violaton of Ockham’s razor that it is really out there. Instead of thinking about a practical solution, people on here seem to jump to the oddest conclusions first.

If a plane crashed, does that mean devils pushed it out of the sky? Of course it does! If someone is a screaming about planet nuetron and hearing voices, are they automatically possesed? Of course! Sure, they might be baked on drugs or just plain nuts, but is it more fun to blame the supernatural?

Let’s get real people. 😃

It’s all very circumstantial.

Remember, theres’ alot to psychological things people can do, too.

I know a wiccan who can throw her voice. She’s creepy in other ways, but harmless. She does it to make people think she has powers. More mentlly ill than anything.

Sounds to me as if she is someone who was raised as a Catholic in a Catholic country, rejected the Church and went to some wacky protestant group - no one hates Catholicism more than someone who has rejected the Faith.

Pray for her, have a Mass said for her reversion and find some Catholics to hang out with 🙂

Hi Jenny,

Relax, I definitely don’t think that a woman can put a curse or an evil mojo on you!
If you are fallen from the state of grace, you can be cursed. Be careful. Also be careful, because when you are in a state of mortal sin, those demons that may have been harassing you at her house, can follow you to your own house and harass you and your family.

How do I know this? I know priests who perform exorcisms. I’ve had deliverance prayers done in my house. My house has a group of demons (no, not poor souls), who will not go away. We are in the process of trying to get rid of them. No, you’re not crazy. I’ve seen, heard, and felt them harass me. It’s very real.* All I can say is that, for most people, you have to experience it to believe it.*

I’d say, yes, ask for a blessing and go to confession.

Stay away from her. She may practice a mixture of catholicism and spiritualism, which are incompatible, I know, but she may.

A wiccan apologist?

If they worship something other than the Holy Trinity what is it that they worship?
I’m hardly a “Wiccan apologist”, but I am a fair guy who gives people the benefit of the doubt. I don’t accuse them of worshipping the devil unless they say they are worshipping the devil.

Psalm 27

27:1 Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?
27:2 When evildoers came at me to eat up my flesh, even my adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell.
27:3 Though an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear. Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident.

No such thing when dealing (which you shouldn’t be doing) with someone who practices in the satanic.
Oh, sorry. I forgot that good Catholics can’t encounter anyone different from them without a biohazard suit. Seriously tho, wiccans, athiests etc are all around. Just because I know someone dosnt mean that im best buddies. And even if I was…most “wiccans” are fallen away catholics who simply believe in Mother earth and faries and kind spirits. Pagan but not satanic. Actually, my best friend, woman who will be my maid of honor one day, went through that. Priests treated her abysmally and other Catholics told her when she was young to “suck up” her suffering and that she was lucky to have a fatal medical condition because she could go to Heaven sooner. Nevermind the blame they put on her because she was heavy (which was a result, not a cause of the problem).

There are Satanists. But most wiccans are people the Church has grossly failed, neglected and abused. I myself understand that…but I will stop here before I list offences of the Church that can get me banned. No, its not sexual abuse…but its systematic cruelty and rudeness of both parish and priests. If you are really intrested PM me. Not every Catholic feels good about being one.
