Is writing your prayers the same as regular praying?

I’ve been writing down my prayers a lot as it’s easier for me than regular prayer but I just want to make sure that that’s ok? I know people keep prayer journals and things but is it better to say some things to God through normal prayer?

Prayer is lifting your mind and heart to God. Whatever helps you do that is prayer.

If you think about all the different forms of prayer there are, it makes sense that we each find our particular way to pray. And it’s all good.

I tend to be a better writer than I am a speaker. I write my prayers (and thoughts) down a lot. It’s the turning of the heart toward God that matters, not the medium with which we do it.

I think writing is especially magical! Go for it. When you write, even in regular ‘non-spiritual’ writing, and you aim to express the heart without filters, something really special happens inside; and you can even break down in tears or sometimes an inexplicable joy. How much more when the writing is addressed to God? It might even serve to deeply comfort you in later occasions (the record of your words) or allow you to track interior changes. I think it’s brilliant.

It is an unusual form of interaction with God, but He knows your heart. Prayer need not involve a single word, either written or spoken. For example, contemplating Christ in the Blessed Sacrament with love and devotion carries the potential to call down more spiritual blessings than a lifetime of less-involved verbal prayer.

One such example is the man which the Curé of Ars (St. John Vianney) would see frequently contemplating the Blessed Sacrament. Never any physical sign of a prayer or other devotion in evidence. The Curé asked him what occurred when he was in the Lord’s presence. The man said, simply:
“I look at Him and He looks at me”

Some people are mute and can never raise their voices to God.
Others are in situations where they have to remain silent, but they still pray, in their hearts and minds directly to God.

Sometimes I write out a prayer (sometimes I modify an existing prayer to fit my circumstances) and then I say it out loud.
The writing of it clarifies my thoughts, although I know God already knows what I want to say 🙂
