Is yoga demonic or no?

Kundalini may be a Sanskrit word but it is also just one unique discipline of Yoga as others are, Vinyasa, Hatha, etc.

People need activities, it be baseball, cycling, Yoga has the postures, the positions, the Asanas.

I don’t know if doing something simple like the Tree Pose, etc. by itself is wrong.
“Kundalini Yoga” as such is a discipline invented in the 60-70’s but Kundalini, the energy dormant at base of all humans spine is what all Yoga is designed to optimize & stabilize the flow of. But to really get any fruit from it one should activate and balance the 7 energy centras or “chakras” as its called in India. These 7 Chakras constitute the soul according to yogic philosophy but also corresspond well with “the gifts of the Holy Ghost”.
Kundalini is the Holy Ghost & flow within all humans.

The church seems very reactionary & afraid of all things outside even the latin tradition theres a perfect spiritual tradition in the eastern catholic & orthodox churches called hesychasm which could have filled this void. I know the latin church disregarded hesychasm and said study isvthe only way to illumination in thr 1300s but even the illiterate can become saints.
On the other hand, we should not idealize the similarities between yoga and the Orthodox “theosis” process, including the hesychast meditation. Yoga doesn’t seek the union with a personal God, nor it admits that it’s impossible for man to “discover God in himself” simply by doing certain exercises designed to excite some inner spiritual powers. That’s why, from what I know, many Orthodox thinkers and priests are even more hostile than Catholics towards confusing yoga with Christian spiritual practices: Orthodox meditation doesn’t deny the humility and “holy fear” of man before a personal Creator, but on the contrary, it proceeds from them.
To gain a better perspective, here’s an example of an Orthodox author who had practiced yoga and then left it and fully returned to the Orthodox faith:

This is an interesting blog but it seems Danion is actually following a hard core Hindu religion. It sounds like he is following the disciple of a famous meditation guru. Pretty intense compared to the few of us who might watch yoga on TV or do it at some class.

veria.com/tv/show/yoga-for-life?tab=host

Or read about it in a book or on the internet. To us, what this Danion was doing was really following an extreme.
“You believe in reincarnation, don’t you?” –-
“And you think that I am John the Evangelist, don’t you?”
“Get out, you lost souls! Here is the House of the Lord, and if you do not renounce your madness it means that you do not belong here!”
Good blog but respectfully, I am sure none of us who take yoga here are dealing with issues like this.

India and China are as old as the ages and are world’s into themselves with a million people, if someone is a “Yogi”, I wonder if it could mean they are a Master but really may not imply Yoga.

Is “Kundalini” breath? I don’t seem to find that it is breath, in Yoga we are often told to follow our breath…and that in part is for health concerns, in exercise, especially if one holds a “static” position, it is often important to breath so as not to be building up possible pressure.

How do you know that the mystical union brought by Yoga is not the true union with God? Does allmighty God confine his salvation only to those brought up in an western culture or only to those who use spiritual exercises or techniques invented by catholics? I personally cannot believe this.
Yoga is neutral in its powers & will only lead you where your true intentions wants it to lead you. After I do Yoga, i meditate on the Jesus prayer, the our father, the crucifiction or scriptures. The 8 paths of yoga as valid virtues cant be off-limits becaus they have been translated from a sanskrit text written by men not exposed to Christ and into english. Why not construct a catholic yoga system with latin prayers, the rosary & the whole bit. Lets face the truth here: Yoga wont simply go away from the west & will continue to conquer souls in the name of New Age from christianity because christianity it seems to the people have no answers to the questions, no relevance for “me, personally, here and now”. Christianity is not used to being challenged in this way where it cannot resort to scripture quotes and its infallability to persuade people to stay. This question of yoga is to be taken very seriously indeed and the Catholic church needs a modern alternative that has RELEVANCE for people today in that is should be applicable to life in modern society.

Many catholics today seems to not be interested in guiding seekers through spiritual exercises.

Look, I live in Europe and here is a chilins fact about the west Today which means Anerica tomorrow: 81% of europeans believe there is a God. 20% consider themselves practicibg christians according to CBN news.

So, what shall we as Christians do to convince western people which have the blessing of a soul hungering for God that the religion that built the west is superior in guidance towards true spiritual progress when so many catholic churches simply is no longer on the level of spirituality anymore but concentrated on social gatherings & dilemmas of modern life being true to the scripture and dogmas?

The eastern orthodox seems far superior in this quetion right now and I believe it is because Roman Catholicism is now in shambles, no difference in lithurgy from lutheranism , infested by moral relativism & attempts to liberally politicize its organisation.

Bless you

Ezekiel 3:16-21

16And it came to pass at the end of seven days, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 17Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. 18When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. 19Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. 20Again, When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand. 21Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul.

Christ even goes further and says it would be better for you to put a mill stone around your neck and drown yourself than to harm the little ones.

These posts that attempt to support Yoga demonstrate the validity of the Vatican warnings which only understate the Christ's warnings in the Gospels and the other New Testament authors.
One who cultivates intensely Yoga ends (because of the hidden world behind the practice of Yoga) inevitably and unconsciously under the influence of Satan. Through the influence of the forces of the universe that are nothing more than demonic forces, the man exposes himself to the danger of falling under the power of hell, even if there is an illusion of the practice of “Christian Yoga”.

Before the great temptations of our times, the last eschatological times, Jesus calls us: ““I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me”” (John 14:6).

Whoever abandons Christ and turns to another redemption that comes from below, from the depths of Yoga, will meet to perdition, ““who forsake you shall confused … because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, the Lord”” (cf. . Jer 17:13).

Interesting Blue Pickers.

Being a formal NewAge teacher and practitioner, i can say that it is almost impossible to see the wrong doing of this since, we think this is about love, helping the earth, promoting peace etc… I sincerely thought i was working for God and the church was corrupted. I never ceased to pray God, Jesus and Mother Mary but neither-less, i got caught up in this NONE SENSE illusion.

Many things, i started to question especially with those ideas that you charge what you are worth (destroy charity), the craziness of the teaching of Abraham with manifestation (destroy humility and spirit of pauvrety) and many more flaws, lead me to question but i didn’t think that REIKI was bad or Yoga. Anyway, i started to be part of the group of saying the Rosary every Tuesday and i started to question even more and began to get rid of many new age books i had. Then i read Mother Mary’s message, and then i became aware of a woman that had an extraordinary experienced with Jesus, which himself later told her how to find a bible that she was to read.

Short story, i had to begin to pray Mother Mary and God to show me my wrong doing. I have been to confession and the prayer of the priest were amazing. I had to still work extremely hard to clear myself from this none sense from the new age.

Now, i can feel the closeness of God which lead me to see even more of my flaws. I had such a way to go, such a way. I feel deep sorrow inside for betraying our Lord this way. I never thought that i was doing such ever but clearly, i was.

Thank you for bringing more light and intellect in this post. I hope for the ones that aren’t involved in any new age modality will take this warning and stay away from it. For the one that are caught up, that they seek the truth and for our Lord to have mercy on us and guide us back to the right path.

Blessings and love!

In yogic philosophy the natural energy og a human body is split up in 2 where the control of breathing energy is called “prana” or “pranayama”. The control of this kind of breathing-energy (which is only available when breathing in through the nose according to yogic philosophy) will first of all stabilize ones natural flow of “kundalini”. Prana & Kundalini is the lifeforce chich exists in all of creation. But ideally, yoga is designed to first of all awaken your body to the natural flow of Kundalini which is another word for The Holy Spirit or what the Jews call The Holy Shekinah and the Chinese call it “Chi”.

Kundalini is also connected to the sexual energy and it’s flow will decrease if one allows oneself to get an orgasm. This I can testify to and according to yogic philosophy, perticularly a male “…” will exhaust natural energy.

When Kundalini starts flowing through ones body it has the power to clean you up from inside as it is a purifying force. This means sinful thoughts etc.

So I shall be judged for eternal hellfire because all the bodymovements I utlize for prayer are copywrited by Hinduism? What does “abandoning Christ” has to do with yoga exercises?

Again, its all about ones intention…, I have never felt so much joy, happiness and Love towards all of Humankind, the Holy Trinity, His creation and life as I have since I started practicing Yoga. How can this be bad??
I agree in that one should probably stay away from Reiki (but personally I dont know enough about it to condemnt it)

I sincerely believe that God does not care about “copywrites” when it comes to methods of reaching closer to him. I feel sincerely more loving & Awestruck at Mass when I regularly do Yoga and Meditation than when I dont do it.

“The Living Water” is exactly what The Holy Spirit is and it has increased since I started working on my character, become aware of sin and working on yoga + meditations…

This problem also occurs in Orthodox Judaism where the some faithful has started to complement their intellectual knowledge of spirituality & Torah by the physical spiritual exercises of Yoga… Some condemn it, other feel it only helps… Again, to do yoga doesnt mean you sign a contract that says “I accept all new age doctrines”

At my parish they have Zen-Meditation courses every week. Wouldnt that be equally riskful as utilizing Yoga-techniques for deepening one commitment to Christ?

I was informed that there is no teaching in the church against yoga.

I discovered that even if the Hindu’s claim that yoga is offered up to their gods, there really is only one God, The Holy Trinity.

I started a yoga class last night at myyogaonline.com and the teacher kept speaking of the body healing itself, and finding that inner divine. I completely ignored her teachings but I followed the movements and physical aspects of what she was teaching.

I strangely woke up in the middle of the night last night and was wide awake.

Im wondering if yoga affects the mind more than it affects the spirit, or vice versa, or neither. They speak of teaching the body how to fix itself. Somewhat like a neural reboot. I felt this might have affected my spiritual life. Or maybe I was just being paranoid.

Again, I completely ignore the philosophies of yoga. I merely focus on what they tell me to do physically. But sometimes when Im in a relaxed laying down position it seems like they start bombarding me with their philosophies. In a calm voice they say, “let that inner divine come out.” Or something along those lines.

I have experienced some troubles in the past with evil spirits so I was definitely worried when I entered into it. But I woke up this morning and felt this great soreness on my muscles that I was looking for. I have a lot of injuries from football and yoga seems like it can really help.

Any advice? (sorry for such a long post)
:o

This is an example of intent.

I’m not thinking about unicorns and glitter when I practice martial arts, but rather concentrate about mastering my body (physical conditioning, mastering self-defense techniques, etc.). It is my opinion that it is disrespectful to God to allow one’s body to waste away, as so many people do. I can’t respect others if I don’t respect myself, nor can i help others to my fullest if I can’t help myself. My own body would become a distraction to myself.

I came to realize long ago that many of the so-called religious elements are remnants of culture and/or tradition, and one should understand this perspective, not only in martial arts, but life in general. The exercises, techniques, etc. can be practiced universally void of cultural and traditional elements.

Exactly, this is well stated.

If I do some yoga, no way am I thinking about love, helping the earth and promoting peace.

Thinking about those things is more to do with the Crystals crowd and all that, it may be new age but it’s not yoga exercise.

New age use a lot of the power of intent etc… It isn’t the message that i was trying to deliver, but to say that even though your intent is for health purpose, there are many seeds of weed being planted in your subconscious that you like it or not. In time, under the perfect condition, those weeds will grow if you aren’t vigilant. For some, it could be a book for others it could be a new age modality. We must listen to the voice of conscience and if it is weaken from our choice, you can pray and ask to be shown the way. I am not even interested to argue or being right,** but i do care about you and everyone**. I cannot stay distance and watching people embracing a path that will lead them to deep sorrow. Our life doesn’t even belong to us, it belongs to God. Have you thought what free will truly mean? Perhaps it is for us to demonstrate to God that we truly choose him and we want to love him, to know him, to serve him and being with him will all of our heart, our soul and our deepest desire. New age is about self empowerment, the teaching of Jesus is to be humble, serve, to love etc…even self denial. I understand now that any involvement in New Age is serving other gods, it is a betrayal of our father the living and only God.

Again, i have no concern about stretching or exercise. Teacher that teach about yoga are full blast New Age involvement. I am willing to give credit that some people only care about the exercise part, but in my experience, i haven’t meet one. Please be careful and it is time, now that you simply ask Mother Mary to guide you and protect you.

Love and blessings!

The same can be said about anything in life, whether it be having Protestant friends or eating Chinese food.

There was a time in my life where I was a born again Christian, where I saw evil in everything. It was probably the most depressing part of my life. Now I choose to look at life as God’s creation, with God’s hands in everything. When looked at from that perspective, doing stretches isn’t going to lead you worship false gods.
New age is about self empowerment, the teaching of Jesus is to be humble, serve, to love etc…even self denial. I understand now that any involvement in New Age is serving other gods, it is a betrayal of our father the living and only God.
IMHO, there is nothing wrong with self-empowerment, put in its proper context. As I mentioned earlier, bettering oneself allows one to help others better themselves. There is a difference between that and placing oneself above God.

I can also say that I have met more caring and loving human beings at yoga classes than in any churches during my whole life an our Lord said “by their fruits you shall know them”. (Though not yet catholic)

From a historical prespective yoga came out of Vedic culture & has been adopted by tibetan buddhism & chinese taoism. Because the boundaries of geography are no longer an issue the same will and indeed is happening in the west.
There is nothing in the movements with its syncronized breathing that in themselves are forever locked to “demonic influences”. I consider it illogical that God would have created the world and Man but assigned practicly all movements to only be used by Hindus forever. The God of Israel is everywhere at all times and is all powerful.

Evil comes from human separation from God and humanities inability to see God in all of creation. From this all evils stem.

I dont consider it appropriate to out of self perceived cultural superiority forever condemn the science of Yoga and its practicioners to eternal damnation or even associate them as servants of evil. Many different religions use physical yoga for deepening meditations.

The very meaning of Yoga is the same as the meaning of Religion: to achieve Union with God. If you look at the “8 limbs” of yoga you see that they are neutral. Buddhists dont even know if there is a God and Hindus believe in many Gods, yet they all have evolved unique systems of yoga to suit their particular beliefs. Physical yoga is simply 1 “limb” and serves as a means to strengtening the body, spirit and mind during meditation.

We are all children of God and are to the best of our abilities to love all humans.

To clarify, my position and personal humble opinion is that I dont believe that Yoga in itslef is dangerous, meaning the postures or the breathing.

But i dont recommend anyoneas a Christian to engage in strict hindu yoga. When there are mantras being sung in Sanskrit you should avoid it.

Be careful in what meditations you do, if they are guided ones.

Stay away “Kundalini Yoga” until you are over 18, have a stable life AND an experienced teacher.

Most important is:
NEVER EVER start yoga without an experienced teacher IN PERSON who you can talk to about how you feel, your concerns etc.

Forgive me, but where I live, in Sweden, they even have Yoga in first grade and kindegarden for children. The hospitals “prescribe” medical yoga classes for many diseases. There are yoga classes at church and even the catholic church have Zen Buddhist meditation so I have grown accustomes to it. The state of christianity is such in protestant countries in Europe that the churches are even themselves teaches yoga etc.
I heard the same about many catholic european nations.

Always conduct with your spiritual director or priest first and between classes.

Remember to not engage in spiritual yoga before you are 18.

If the false prophet were to come and unite all religions many will be received.
