Is yoga demonic or no?

Hindus call yogas paths to salvation. One of the yoga is the yoga of mastering ones body. Another yoga is about gaining esoteric wisdom and realizing that you are god.

You really can’t separate yoga from its spiritual roots.

It is like engaging in animistic chants and body movements and assuming that it is completely separate and will not have spiritual repercussions.
I agree. And I also think that a high percentage of the mostly women in the class are doing it for the health and exercise benefits only.

As someone born a Hindu and living in India, I will tell you that yoga of the body is considered spiritual path to moksha. There are occult powers that gurus claim that yoga and meditation can give. Why take a needless risk when St. Paul wrote that offerings to idols are to demons? Why believe in sacraments if the physical can have no connection to the spiritual?

So much fear in this thread… Fear stems from lack of faith or misguided/malformed faith.

Believe in God, praise God, practice the Sacraments, and do yoga (if that is your thing) or not…don’t waste your time (which there is too little of) with petty arguments like this. I implore you all… Go feed the hungry, clothe the naked, care for the sick and shelter the homeless.
Amen to that. I am packing, for where, I am not sure…

I have studied this as someone interested in what many believe, not to adopt it as my own.
But I will say this, Yoga meditation techniques helped me to guide my thoughts closer to Jesus. This is a good thing…

You are blessed because i know if i was to pass today, i would be in great trouble but i have faith that God will give me the time i need. This new age thing truly tarnished my soul, my prayer is for the ones involved is to get out of it while it is time and for NO new soul to get into the trap.

Blessings and love!
You are aware that our Lord Jesus Christ and his Holy Apostles themselves taught that the Body is a Temple of the Holy Spirit and thus God. The central tennet that both Judaism and christianity have in common is that both body/matter and spirit is Holy and both have a necessary part to play in the role of salvation. Thats whats different from pretty much all other religions, especially gnosticism and new age where the spirit is superior to the body. As christians we shall not fear anything and can enjoy everything that is not a sin får the benefit of both soul and body. Sound body sound soul. We as christians are not to worship foreign Gods. But I hope that every rational person will agree that a specific movements of the body with synced breathing does mot in themselves invoke or open up to foreign"Gods". For that you need to chant foreign religpus invocations or maybe imagine. There is but One God Who is infinitely powerful and ever present. I do however advice caution to the Young people but as an example here in Sweden the doctrines even prescribe yoga sessions against certain conditions and its taught in schools and used at companies to keep personell healthy.

There is ‘secular’ yoga and religious yoga. No foreign “God” can copywrite human movements since there is only One God. But religious can be compared to worship or foreign religions.

Bless you

This post said it all.

Now the ones that keep defending that yoga is no big deal.

I have a few questions for you.

Do you read the bible fluently? Do you believe in the bible?
Do you pray the rosary and mystery?
Do you pray God daily and ask him to guide you?
Do you pray Mother Mary to assist you to be holy as she is?
Do you go to confession often?
Do you go to church at least on Sunday to receive the Holy Eucharist?
Do you practice Jesus teaching and seek to imitate him when he came on earth?

If you don’t, may i suggest that you try for a little while and see if you feel the same way about Yoga. I can guaranty that you won’t.

All the best!

Secular in usage for the care of the body, that is. Not a bad thing itself…

Of course none of the cardinals, priests or apologists who have been cited in this thread as endorsing yoga could possibly have as rich a knowledge of scripture as you … Or as deep a prayer life … Or resort to the sacraments as often as you … Or have as close a relationship with Our Lord and Our Lady … Or as great and burning a desire to imitate their holiness as you …

Your post stinks at the very least the seriously misguided notion that all good and holy people must necessarily think exactly the same way as you on this issue. I will pray that God open your eyes to see that this is not so.

Yoga is all about relaxing and releasing tension. It seems many people against it need it. Peace of mind brings us closer to God and Jesus.

Yes, it is, regarding classes for body movement. It is the religious philosophy that the OP has the concerns with, at least from what I am understanding from her posts.
Regarding the Yoga of body and the Yoga of philosophy, which are intertwined if one should so choose, but it is not necessary; it is not demonic. It is another belief.
I could really use a stretch right now…Thank you for your post!! Like I said, Yoga meditation helped me tremendously to lead my heart closer to Him, Jesus.

A: Saying that a foreign “Gods” have a copywrite / Registered Trademark stamp on practically ALL stretch-positions that a human being can do is stating that there are foreign “Gods” with power over creation and most movements of a human body that coincide with the movements of the human body Indians happend to be engaged are forever connected to worshipping of false “Gods” which do not exist and therefore I consider i blashpemy because it is implying that the ONLY God: Of Isac, Abraham and Moses is not Omnipotent and Omnipresent, God Forbid! I do not want to engage in such blasphemous thought exercises and will therefore withdraw from this thread.

B: How can with logic and rationality discern that Yoga in it’s basic form is not a religion in itself? The very name YOGA means “UNION” whose latin counterpart is “RELIGIARE” which is the root word for “RELIGION”. Thus Yoga means Union because it is discipline whose ultimate Goal is union with the Divine.
Our Lord sait “From their Fruits you shall know them”. I have never met a person in Yoga class that threatens me with Hell and takes for himself the right to judge me as immoral.

The eight paths of Yoga/Union
1. Universal morality:
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you
2. Personal observances: “Watchfulness” in Christianity. Observing ones inner life in order to correct the fallen an advance the righteous.
3. Body postures: Awareness of the Body, created by God. Healthy.
4. Breathing exercises, and control of prana/life energy: Enables the individual to keep his inner silence as well as being considerably more healthy since breath is one of the most important things of the human body and is connected with the spirit (God did blow the “Breath of Life” through Mans nostrils).
5. Control of the senses: Enables the individual to guard his heart from sinful thoughts and depression.
6. Concentration and cultivating inner perceptual awareness: Becoming aware of ones Nous / Soul, intellect and spirit
7. Devotion, Meditation on the Divine: Meditative/contemplative Prayer
8. Union with the Divine: The Goal of Christianity is “Mystical Union”

This is what I personally have contemplated to realise that Yoga in its “pure” form is not Evil in and of itself.
Yoga is also not “bound” to Hindusim. Yoga is an Asian philosophical system, much like the principles of aristotelean and platonic philosophy was used by some of the Church Fathers of Christianity in the early theology and philosophy, so the principles of the Vedic philosphy called “Yoga” has been incorporated and used in other asian philosophies and religions. Taoism, Sikhism and Buddhism both have their very own form of Yoga. Taoists do not believe in any other “Gods” than One which they refuse to define as “God” because they figured human definition is fallible and should not be applied to “the Tao”. SIkhs believe in only One God

Because of above reasons and the obviously Good Fruits of learning how to breath correctly in sync with body awareness I personally came to the conclusion that the first 8 principles of Yoga is not “Evil” in and of themselves. Defining these as “Evil” would have the consequence of Good and Evil being redefined and much of the principles that constitute some very basics of Universal Goodness must in that case also be subsequently redefined as “Evil”.

Of course a christian should not take part in specific hindu Yoga but as I say, Yoga is now an recommended activity by physicians and psychiatrists all over the secular world. Some Orthodox Jews have also started to use the benefits of basic Yoga in order to get closer to Our Father.

Because Fear, Conflict and judgemental thinking is antithetical to my personal spiritual growth I will not post anymore in this thread.
I wish you all a happy life and hope you shall be blessed!

Good thoughts, Good words, Good Deeds!

It’s important to note that when words and/or concepts are incorporated into other cultures, they often lose their original meaning. How many westerners practicing “yoga” have heard of the above? The percentages are probably in the single digits.

I have practiced yoga many times in my life. I have found that during those times I had clarity, courage, a heightened awareness, and focus. The meditations were helpful in teaching me to surrender to God, to surrender to what is. Of course, my instructor was Catholic.

I love how at the end of every class we would say, “Namaste” which means, “I honor the light within you.” Jesus says that He is the “Light of the world,” and that statement always brought me to be more aware of His presence in each one of us. :newidea:

I don’t feel this is wise to mention religious people that support yoga, and say we can also do yoga. We don’t know if they prayed before writing these book etc… It isn’t wise because again they are subject to make mistake like all of us. But about the Pope Jean Paul II and the Pope Benedict VI whom both wrote an article warning about new age? I am sure that i don’t need to convince anyone that those special souls are truly chosen by God and they are Holy Man. They always pray before making a decision or doing anything, not to count they are blessed by the Holy Spirit.

Many great men and women are called to the religious life to serve God in such a special way. Priesthood is such a special call. Sadly, we all know that some men and women that clearly wasn’t their called did join also the religious life and did awful things to children. I don’t think that i need to make a point that this doesn’t make it ok for any adult to do such a thing to a child because corrupted religious people crossed the line. This said, only to make my point that we cannot tell our self oh look, they support yoga. The voice that we need to listen is our conscience which God uses to speak to us.

In any way i want to send the message that i am miss perfect because i am far from this but this doesn’t stop me to care about you. Please accept my deep apologies, if i gave you this impression, please know that you are so loved by God. My prayers is for as many of us to make it to the right path and allow our blessed Mother to guide us.

Her message from Medjugorje was:

Message, 25. February 2013 “Dear children! Also today I call you to prayer. Sin is pulling you towards worldly things and I have come to lead you towards holiness and the things of God, but you are struggling and spending your energies in the battle with the good and the evil that are in you. Therefore, little children, pray, pray, pray until prayer becomes a joy for you and your life will become a simple walk towards God. Thank you for having responded to my call.” 02/2013

Blessings and love

p.s. If you take the time to read some of my posts, i have nothing against the exercise and taking care of ourself, it is the new age aspect that i wish for you to be very careful about. God is above all of this.

Because of those feelings that you mentioned, i was involved in New Age for about 10 years, thinking i was serving God and doing nothing wrong.

I started to question everything a few years back, when i started to do the rosary, i started to question even more. When i read some of the message of the blessed Mother, i knew that i was off track. I had to pray to be shown my wrong doing and to have remorse.

Short story, i realized today how much my soul was in great danger and sadly so many souls that i dragged into this. I grieves today for hurting people this way and most of all for offending God. His light is showing me so many aspect of me, i came to realize that i am nothing without Jesus, nothing and i need him with me always. I am weak, etc… but i have hope and i have faith.

Blessings and love!

It is of no use. Someone will complain about unapproved apparitions in your post. Some people won’t listen until they get bitten. People seem to act as if the devil is a moron or does not deceive the world–maybe does not exist, really, so why fear? Somehow taking up something that is considered spiritual by native people will not matter.

Titus 1:15
To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

I have a few questions for you.

Do you read the bible fluently? Do you believe in the bible? - Yes…
Do you pray the rosary and mystery? Yes…
Do you pray God daily and ask him to guide you? Yes…
Do you pray Mother Mary to assist you to be holy as she is? Well I pray to Mary asking her to pray for me to God… she nor any saints can do more than that.
Do you go to confession often? I haven’t always, but I do now
Do you go to church at least on Sunday to receive the Holy Eucharist? yes… with one clarification… I go to Church every Sunday to receive the Lord and to be in communion with the People of God and to celebrate the paschal sacrifice
Do you practice Jesus teaching and seek to imitate him when he came on earth? **Yes, in my imperfect way…I try.
**
If you don’t, may i suggest that you try for a little while and see if you feel the same way about Yoga. I can guaranty that you won’t. - **this is an absurd statement… as I mentioned earlier, their are Catholic Priests, Bishops and Archbishops that practice yoga (notice the lowercase “Y”) daily… they are a much more authoritative voice than any on this board. **

All the best!
God bless you all…

Dear Jesus, Mary and Joseph please bless and protect all those who seek to condemn and divide; either knowingly or unknowingly. May they grow in faith, hope and charity and become holier and holier with the passing of each new day. May they see God in all things He has created and seek first to understand. May they be enlightened by the Catechism of the Catholic Church (839-848), the Church’s teachings in the form of the true and righteous documents of the Second Vatican Council and the writings of Cardinal Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI in the book Principles of Catholic Theology … Although we are weak and imperfect, may we all constantly seek to live the commandment of Jesus…to love one another as he has loved us. Amen
