Is yoga demonic or no?

I think He expects us to take care of the temple, and not just let it fall apart for lack of maintenance. 🙂
I agree we should exercise and take care of our bodies. I’m just not sure about “turning inward” and focusing on self.

The focus on self in the process of exercise is on the physical being, not the ego as you seem to be implying.

You’re mixing apples and oranges here.

Okay, sorry. 😊 I guess I don’t really know that much about yoga. It kind of scares me, so it’s not something I personally want to pursue.

I go to yoga classes at our YMCA. There has never been any mention of a spirit or inner focus. Our instructor talks about muscles and how to strengthen/lengthen them. If it weren’t for the internet and books, I wouldn’t know that there was more to it than any other exercise class I’ve been to. If there was talk about such things as mentioned in the above posts, I wouldn’t want to go, but since I’ve not heard anything different from other exercise classes focused on body strengthening, I continue to go. Then again, our classes are more like “power yoga”, so we all come home hurting, and there’s not much time to talk about anything but movements and modifications for different needs. Many parishioners go to the same class, and on Sundays we’re all sore from our workouts. I don’t think so many of us would continue if we had an instructor who talked about a spirituality in addition to working us hard. Maybe it just depends upon the kind. We don’t meditate, just work, work, work those muscles!

I did an extensive search and read a bit about this. Practicing the Yoga exercises as you are doing them is good. I have some documents attached so you or anyone else can see just what is dangerous or considered dangerous.

But in all fairness, I have to tell you that people have become possessed by practicing Yoga which is defined to be both the mental and physical exercises. One case I am familiar with the person goes into extremely painful and contorted positions. The demon is then comfortable when his victim is suffering thusly. This was a person practicing Kundalini yoga.

Just performing an exorcise doesn't imply honoring or venerating a demon. It is the mental exorcises that are part of the religious aspects of Yoga that is dangerous.

But just exercising as you describe is good.
Peace,

IMO, I believe that one can do the exercises within a yoga practice, and not be partaking in any religious activity. I guess we could call such a person a Cafeteria Yogi. I would personally caution a person from getting into the spirituality that sometimes an instructor tries to bring to the practice. Especially since so many yoga instructors are completely clueless about any of the spirituality that may be tied to a yoga practice. Short of a few catch phrases.

Interesting video… I can’t see anything demonic resulting from this man’s experience. Granted it’s just a few minutes out of his life. youtu.be/qX9FSZJu448 Quite frankly, I can only think this man’s life has been saved by the grace of God. Where the medical field would have let him die of obesity related illness. (which seems more demonic than anything else.)

I have seen other clips of people acting rather strangely with other styles of yogi. Kundallini (spelling) comes to mind. I would avoid such a practice all together. There’s more going on there than a workout.

Here’s a good Catholic article on the restrictions on Yoga as a practice.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting that! It was so clarifying I didn’t even read the rest of the posts following. I will eventually for enjoyment but your response hit the nail on the head for me.

Part of me decided “hey, I can forget about yoga and just do other stretches” but another part really did want to practice yoga because I’ve done yoga and I’ve done “other stretches” and the yoga poses really make my body feel alive. I know for some yoga is a religious practice but I was introduced to it in preliminary warm ups for martial arts and there really is nothing like it! The person leading the class was a christian Korean and since even martial arts has some interesting positions it puts your body in for conditioning yoga just seemed a different extension for that.

When I saw the pagan practices mentioned, it reminded me of a talk I had with my RCIA director. I’ve read a few books by the Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh and I felt they had a lot of good things to say and my director told me the Catholic Faith doesn’t deny that other cultures and belief systems were nothing but terrible ideas but did have some good things about them, they just didn’t have the whole truth. For an example before I became Catholic I went to a few Buddhist meditation sit ins. When I became Catholic I went to a Christian meditation class. We did the same thing - we sat around a room together in the quiet and stillness, but we focused on God. So I don’t think sitting in stillness with the Buddhists was entirely wrong, it just wasn’t rooted in truth. And that’s how I look at yoga but while I still felt I didn’t have an official answer on that, the article you linked reconfirmed my initial feelings on it.

:blessyou:

Peace,
Thank you for bringing that up - I used to read a lot about yoga and Kundalini is no ordinary yoga, it’s not even that common in the west as much as other styles are - you have to kind of seek it out. It’s a much more “mystical” branch if you will, and everything you do in it, even if it’s just sitting, is combined with different breathing practices and meditations on different forces while you do it. There’s just no way to do any form of Kundalini yoga without immersing yourself in the spiritual aspect of it.

I would recommend Iyengar or Power Yoga. Iyengar yoga really focuses on getting the posture exactly right so the main thing you’ll be thinking about is how your hip is rotated, what part of the foot you’re putting your weight on, how far your body will let you stretch your calf, etc… while power yoga is more athletic and it pushes you more towards being able to balance your whole weight on your arms in different postures and it’s more gymnastic in spirit.

Yoga aside could I go on another tangent here? Speaking of breathing made me think of something - even outside of meditation (if you look at martial arts or even running) there IS a practice of learning to control your breath and a lot of people don’t breath naturally. They breath more from their chest as opposed to their belly. Even taking long slow breaths can help when you are having a panic attack (most people don’t, but I do, and it’s recommended for helping with anxiety). So I was wondering if it would necessarily be a bad thing if I ever did breathing exercises outside of the yoga tradition. Doctors teach things like that to pregnant women for child birth, also.

Thanks in advance for anyone’s insight on this.

Ooops, should’ve read more before posting. This is really just an addendum to my first post, however.

There truly are some postures that imitate Hindu deities and those should be avoided. Some sources would say that all poses are offered to Hindu deities and as a religious practice this would be true. But to apply that would forbid you from doing basic stretches like toe touches - yogis do that stretch as well in their practice. I would also say that there are some poses that are unique to yoga as a whole package but are often touched on briefly in isolation in other forms of movement such as dance and martial arts. In that vein you could just condense the stretches from dance and martial arts and not call them yoga (half back bends where you bend at the waist backwards and hold it or back stretches were you lift yourself with your arms and look upwards while lying on your stomach).

I guess that’s the spirit other people are coming from when they ask if yoga is okay. As someone who is particularly interested in fitness I’ve looked at a lot of different styles of exercising and yoga has such a comprehensive list of different ways to stretch the body. Flexibility has always been a weak point for me so I’ve always been drawn to it.

Then again, P90X has recently found it’s way into my home and there is a one hour stretching dvd. I will try that out and see if it does the trick and omits any form of yoga from it. The tricky part is yoga has some really basic stretches in it that are found in just about all other forms of fitness (the emphasis toe touching whether standing up or sitting down, for instance).

NO. IT IS NOT DEMONIC. You seriously need to chill and are extremely obsessive compulsive and paranoid. You are brainwashed. Keep an open mind! All of the posts people have been posting are really stupid and delusional. It is really arrogant of all of you to think that only YOUR way is correct. Spirituality is delusional in itself because it can’t stand up to scrutiny and reason. Your “Catholic spirituality” can’t even remotely be proven. Actually I’ll even be bold. It’s complete BS that’s made up to scare people and manipulate them through fear. Anytime a group or person tries to control the way you think or you mind they are simply trying to brainwash you because they have ulterior motives. Maybe if you guys used you brains that your god supposedly gave you and stopped looking at reason and rationality as 'satanic" you could all get out of a lot of the problems a lot of you face in your lives easily. And you also need to remember that the Church is a business just like any other corporation. Think about it. You really think they want people being open minded and free to decide what works for them? Will that help their business? NO. It’s the same thing as Verizon trying to tell people that TMOBILE is evil because their phones have different batteries or different colors. 🤷 So listen. Use your head and stop being superstitious. Prayers or mantras in the end of the day have no power. In the end of the day they are just thoughts of the mind and nothing more. 😉 And once again thoughts or ‘prayers’ have NO power. For example I could think “Hail Satan” or “Blessed be Corn”. They are just thoughts though and have no power over anything. They are all just relative to our sub conscience mind.

The corporations/freemasons/illuminati/reptillians have brainwashed you into being materialistic so that you spend all of your thoughts, energy, efforts, and money into trying to obtain superficial luxury, freedom, and power which benefits no one but them. You are simlpy being used as a pawn in their game.

That is all.

You’re an agnostic and I respect that, don’t think “Hail Satan”. Not all thoughts are harmless.

Nope. It’s an untruth that gets repeated.

Exactly. More than one credible Catholic apologist have been critical of some of his allegations.

I personally just searched “stretching dvd” on amazon and bought the first few dvds that popped up (as Father Mitch recommended). I do one of the dvds daily, except I do skip out when the instructor calls one the positions “downward dog” because she is referring to a yoga asanna. By the Grace of God I think I’m beginning to realize that fitness is great but I’m not going to have this body forever, and I only have about 20-40 years left until I get old and my body will only be used to take my soul to and from Church 😃

Cardinal J. Ratzinger on magic, occultism, yoga.

Part of : Interview by Ignatius Artizzu taken from the magazine “A voice cries out …” # 9 - March 1999 (translated from Italian using Google translator).

Is a link between the spread of Eastern religions and the current resurgence of the occult?

In the background is present, no doubt. Let’s say that the supply of these Eastern religions moves ondifferent levels. There is a yoga reduced to a kind of gymnastics: it offers some element that cangive an aid for the relaxation of the body. Well, if yoga is actually reduced to a gym
it can also accept, in the case of movements which have an exclusively physical sense. But it must
actually be reduced, again, to a mere exercise of physical relaxation, free from any
ideological element. At this point you should be very careful not to introduce a
physical training a certain vision of man, the world, the relationship between man and God
This purification method itself a logical ideas incompatible with the Christian life, may
be compared for example with the “demystification” of the pagan traditions on the creation of
world, made in the first chapter of Genesis, where the sun and the moon, the great gods of myth
are reduced to “light” created by God, lamps that reflect the light of God, and make us
imagine the true Light, who is the Creator of light. And so, even in the case of yoga and other
Eastern techniques would require a transformation and a radical shift that
really out of the way every ideological claim. In the moment in which they appear elements that
profess to lead to a “mystical” become instruments already leading in one direction
wrong.

This transformation, or enlightenment, was there?

Generally no. It may be, however, that some people have tried to exclude religious and ideological elements, keeping these practices on a pure exercise. This can not be excluded.

There may be a “Christian yoga”?

At a time when it is called “Christian yoga” is already ideologically and appears as a religion, and
I do not like so much. While on the purely physical plane, I repeat, some items may
also exist. We must be very careful about the ideological context, which becomes part of
an almost mystical power. The risk is that yoga becomes a method independent of “redemption”, without a real encounter between God and the human person. And in that case, we are already in the transcendent. It 's true that even in prayer and Christian meditation the position of the body has its importance, and it signifies an inner attitude, which is also expressed in the liturgy. But
yoga body movements have a different implication of relationship with God, which is not
that of the Christian liturgy. Must be very careful because behind these elements of the body
lies a conception of being as such, the relationship between body and soul, between man,
world and God

The teaching of transcendental meditation and yoga in the Churches
Catholic and religious communities by priests considered legitimate?

It seems very dangerous because in this context, these practices are already offered as a
something, in fact, religious.

And 'possible to combine the mantra with the Christian prayer?

The mantra is a prayer addressed not to God, but to other gods who are idols.

Why this depreciation of Christ and the Church?

This is a deep question related to the current situation of the world. The roots of this
behavior that we see today are many and have been developed over time, even
if only now emerging in full force. It seems to me that the last element is that, even
once, in Chapter 3 of Genesis: the pride of the man who wants to make himself God and not
agree to submit to him there behind the willingness to take into their own hands and not of God
put yourself in his hands.

Urs Von Balthasar defines transcendental meditation a betrayal of faith
Christian. Do you agree with this statement?

Yes For God Transcendent, the person who called me and loves me, is deformed in a
transcendental dimension of being. I think it is necessary to distinguish between the good God
Transcendent and transcendental. While the Transcendent is a person who has created me, the
is a transcendental dimension of being and therefore implies a philosophy of identity. The path
Transcendental Meditation, taken in its ultimate intentions, has this tendency to drive
to plunge into the identity, and so it is exactly opposite to the Christian, who knows
also a union of identity. Christ identified with us and so we enter into His body, but it is
a different identification, made in love, which is always a personal identity
distinct, while the Transcendental Meditation involves the plunge, let the “dissolve” in the
identity of the Supreme Being.

What is, in spiritual terms, the price of these practices?

The loss of faith and the perversion of the man - God, and a profound disorientation
of the human being, so that eventually the man marries a lie.

Part of an interview of Cardinal J. Ratzinger (the present Pope Benedict XVI)
by Ignazio Artizzu “Una voce grida…” (No.9, March 1999) The questions and answers concern magic and occultism. Since this sphere is closely connected with the spiritual substance of paganism, let us notice at least some of them.

St. Paul on Cyprus publicly calls the sorcerer Elymas the son of the devil. So can we safely claim that behind magic and the world of occultism is always the presence of the devil?

“Yes, I would say that without the devil… this world of magic and occultism would not be possible…”

Is this condemnation by St. Paul the root of the Church’s condemnation of magic and occultism?

“Yes, it is… One cannot use these practices which are characteristic of pagan religions…”

What then is the danger for those who practise magic and occultism?

“… Let us admit that one joins a particular sect or magic group. One will become not only a slave of this group but also a slave of the reality which is behind this group, that is of reality which is really demonic. And one thus runs into a still greater self-destruction, worse than narcotics.”

Do you suppose that there is a deep bond between the spread of Oriental religions and the current explosion of occultism?

“Undoubtedly, there is a deep bond.”

Can “Christian yoga” exist?

“The risk is the fact that yoga will become an independent method of ‘salvation’ which lacks a true encounter of God and a human being. And in this case we already find ourselves in transcendence. The truth is that even in Christian prayer and contemplation the posture of body is important and renders the inward state, which is likewise expressed in the Liturgy. In yoga, however, the movements of body render a different inner content.”

Is it possible to draw a parallel between mantras and the Christian prayer?

“Mantras are a prayer turning not to God but to other deities, which are idols.”

Urs von Balthasar said about transcendental meditation that it is a betrayal of the relation to the Christian faith. Do you agree with it, too?

“Yes, I do.” For God Transcendent, the person who called me and loves me, is deformed in a
transcendental dimension of being. I think it is necessary to distinguish between the good God
Transcendent and transcendental. While the Transcendent is a person who has created me, the

Hang on - the physical postures of yoga have zip, zilch, zero and nada to do with salvation, let alone potentially becoming alternate modes thereof! The spiritual context in which some - not all - practitioners place it may do. The two - physical exercises and spiritual context - are not and cannot be the same thing, since as many have pointed out the postures are done in many other contexts, though not by the same name.

And by saying that posture ‘renders’ belief is he saying the outward motions come first? I would call BS on that. And as exhibits A through Z for my case I would present every bored teenager or Christmas n Easter churchgoer who says the words and goes through the motions but has no belief and so in whom the words and motions produce nothing.

Fire needs both spark and fuel, and faith needs both outward sign and interior disposition. But surely the belief - or at least the seeds of it - must come first, otherwise the physical gestures produce no more faith than they would in an actor pretending to be a devout Catholic - or yogi - in a play or movie.
