The one my diocese produces leaves something to be desired. 😦
My diocesan newspaper is just that, a diocesan newspaper, no more no less. And it disseminates information.

Now a good diocesan newspaper is another thing all together. My old diocese had an excellent diocesan newspaper, and an excellent bishop. I think I’m moving back. 😦

You forgot one answer for your poll. You had “It’s Excellent” and “It Stinks,” there is another answer - “It’s average.”

My diocesan newspaper is excellent in that it has a lot of features and “church interest” stories–what school had a successful fund-raiser, who’s started perpetual adoration, what priest has an anniversary. It focuses on news and is not very theological.

Our Diocesan website provides a look at one or two articles from the newspaper.Initially, click on flag and then click on “Flourish”,
the name of the newspaper.

The best newspapers I think, are the ones that have a one deep theological article per issue.

I live in the archdiocese of Philadelphia. A few years ago they got a new editor Michelle Johnson. She is a 3rd order Carmelite. She changed the format and made the paper great!. It is called the Catholic Standard and Times. She covers new events but added a wonderful spiritual dimension. Her first issue featured Eucharistic Adoration. She also hired Susan Brinkmann a fellow Carmelite to do a prayer series. It was so successful that the paper then published it into a book. I could go on and on with how great they are. And they are not afraid to publish the truth about controversial issues. Sue recently did a series of articles on the truth about homosexuality. This paper should be read by everyone in the country, not just Phila.

Ours leaves everything to be desired - especially desirable would be something actually Catholic in it.

The article which really made me gasp and stretch my eyes was the one by a (female) doctor which was recommending the morning-after pill for young girls who weren’t sure if they were pregnant after a night on the town.

The general tone is ecumenical in the ‘terribly-sorry-we’re-Catholic-but-just-like-folks’ fashion.

you didn’t give enough options----our diocesan newspaper is ok, not great—it depends on the week, the articles etc. i said that it is excellent rather than it stinks but i would like a middle category for a so-so paper

I second the vote for Philadelphia’s “Catholic Standard & Times.”

They’re so good. . . in recent issues they have been reprinting text from the Catholic.com website, for those who aren’t “connected.”

They combine diocesan news with articles on theology, moral guidance, church history, etc. They also have some good columnists, both local and syndicated (e.g. Dr. Ray.) They have articles geared towards young adults, but with a conservative perspective.

Check them out online at:

The Diocese of Joliet, IL paper is very liberal but the same could be said about Bishop Imesh.

Sounds great. I think all Catholics should have some Apologetical bent.

I recently helped a lady refute some Protestants Apologetics that had disconcerted her. She was thinking about leaving the faith, but had enough humility to ask for help, Now she’s fine.

But I plugged her into Catholic.com. Not growing in our knowledge daily, is a detriment to our spiritual welfare, as this lady’s case suggests.

Good for your newspaper editor, we Third Order Carmelites do some things right occassionally. 😉

I voted excellence for our Eastern Oklahoma Catholic. It has plenty of diocesan news of interest, a page-long teaching letter from our Bishop, news from the Vatican, and news of interest to Catholics from around the world. About the only thing I am not thrilled with are the movie reviews. They seem to rarely, if ever, have enough backbone to say, “Don’t go see this one!” But I believe that is a syndicated column, not written locally.

Boston’s Pilot is really very good – informative and orthodox! It’s come a long way to get there, though!

Here is the ours: Carolina Catholic

I think it’s pretty good, as these things go. I enjoy reading the online edition (I haven’t seen a print copy yet.)

Ours is lousy. They seem to entirely ignore our parish - and most other small parishes. And the content is irrelevant to us as far as news. Furthermore, I feel no connection to a ‘diocese’… but very connected to the Church and our parish. We are a very small rural parish.

The closest thing to a diocesan newsletter that I know of is the News Releases section of the Archdiocese.

We have an **elephant in the middle of our living room ** :crying: that our pastor gave an absolutely fantastic!! :clapping: homily about on Sunday, July 11. All parish bulletins have this June 6 letter from our Archbishop as an insert.

Father spoke about although we don’t know what will happen in all this, that it will be GOOD.

The topic is that the Portland (Oregon) Archdiocese has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (which by definition is a VOLUNTARY filing). We’re the first diocese in the nation that has filed.

The local secular rag (which is as much editorial in its “news” as its editorial pages, sometimes :tsktsk: ) has had a string of articles:

Up to six months or so ago I thought the Philadelphia Archdiocese had a good newspaper, The Catholic Standard and Times. I wasn’t sure how good, as I don’t really have comparison material. Maybe average, but I suspected that it might have been than that. However, we have a new editorial staff, and now I think it is excellant.

You be the judge.

Our paper is decent I mean it won’t win a Pulitzer or anything but it does provide some decent communication.

I recognize that the Diocese does not have the resources and support any where near the magnitude of a secular paper.

Let’s pray for better reporting in the future and more commitment from all of us to support our Dioceses in all endeavors.

God Bless.

Carl

With our new bishop, our diocesan paper is getting better. Fr. McBrien’s terrible column was removed. (Thank God!)
