Is your diocesan newspaper any good?

I voted “it stinks” beacuse it’s closer to that than it is to being excellent…it’s really boring, most of the time. However, I tend to read it online and there might be stuff in the actual newspaper that’s not online. Maybe. Most of the time it’s just talking about the big churches upstate, too.

I love our diocesan newspaper, The Leaven (www.theleaven.com) It’s very well laid-out with strong writing and photography. I really enjoy reading the articles they write that integrate faith into daily life and “small stuff” people in our diocese do. It’s orthodox and thorough.

It is good, but we have to see where it goes because they got a new editor. The old one is the man. He is so awsome. Great Catholic and great editor.

Ours is pretty good. Bishop Wiegand has an editorial each issue that I enjoy reading pretty well. Overall, I’d give it (the paper) an 8 out of 10. There are some things that tend to be a bit heterodox, but that doesn’t happen often.

Pax,
Dean

PS: Although since our Bishop had liver transplant, he hasn’t been writing his editorial, due to recovery time. I can’t wait till it comes back!

The one my diocese produces leaves something to be desired. 😦
Ours is pretty decent: evangelist.org/
It rather reminds me of a small-town weekly.

I just love ours. Today’s Catholic for the diocese of Ft. Wayne/South Bend Indiana. I have had my subscription for 3 years and cannot imagine going without. Great articles and wonderful involvement and focus on community activites, leaders, and recognition. It also contains much information about the world in general - news, media, current issues, etc. 👍

With our new bishop, our diocesan paper is getting better. Fr. McBrien’s terrible column was removed. (Thank God!)
Amen! Bishop Finn told the liberals, who complained loud and long, to go elsewhere to read McBriens trash… 😃 👍

The Catholic Key
Bishop Finn:
Bishop Finn said he wants The Catholic Key to be an important component of ongoing diocesan catechesis and evangelization, and an instrument of reconciliation.
For that reason, he said, he directed The Key to discontinue Father Richard McBrien’s often controversial syndicated column.
“Father McBrien likes to stir the pot,” Bishop Finn said. "He approaches things with a certain skepticism and cynicism. You can get that in a lot of places, so go get it somewhere else.

Amen! to the positive comments about Philadelphia’s Standard and Times - has grown to be absolutely terrific. Summer is a bit slim but, since the new editor, it has turned into a must read for all Catholics.

Ours is okay, not the greatest, not the worst.

It would be great if everybody posted a link to their diocesan newspapers. I think it would be interesting to read them.

You made it very hard for me not to reply '“whats a newspaper” but I would be doing a diservice to Fr. Mark and his staff at the “Leaven” here in Kansas. They do an excellent job.

The Washington Standard comes across as a Homeowners Association Newletter. No real journalism here.

I belong to the Military Arch. I don’t think they have a newspaper. I could be wrong though. If I am, please let me know so I can keep my eyes out for one.

The Arlington Catholic Herald gets my vote as one of the best. My Catholic formation was as an adult and in Northern Virginia. I would even say the paper assisted in my formation. I first read Mary Beth Bonacci there for example.

It’s too bad that so many are poorly done because they can be an excellent tool for catechesis and evangelization.
I have to agree since we are also in the diocese of Arlington. I find it to be one of the best I have seen.

Here in San Diego and Imperial counties in So. California, our diocesan newspaper is The Southern Cross. It just recently won as best mid-sized Catholic newspaper in the country as awarded by the Catholic Press Association of the U.S. and Canada. This makes it 2 years in a row for “The Southern Cross.” It’s attractive, has a great lay-out, it’s easy to read, and best of all, has intelligent writing and wonderful photos. Their website does not do justice to the actually periodical - I find that I look and peruse it over and over again until the next issue.
👍 👍
