You are using etymology in an in appropriate way.
No, I am not using it at all. G-d has no name but we know him as Father through Christ. There is only One God, one Truth, one Word and it cannot contradict itself to be True.
Let me illustrate by pointing out how simple the Truth really is. It doesn’t matter which translation in any language the Gospels and OT are reproduced. It is why it has been so successfull. Whether it matches the nuance and sophistication of a DR or NJB, or the simple Gideon found almost everywhere in the US. It is the Word, not the words. It is the idea, not the translation.
…to pagan Sky God, so to Mohammad adopted this Arab word “Allah” that had been used by pagans to refer to the God that he believed was the God of Abraham.
Just because the guy on the corner says it’s a Rolex watch doesn’t make it true even if I believe him and go through life oblivious to the truth. Here is the difference. God has to be true. I shouldn’t have to give you the reason why Jesus Christ is the promise delivered to humanity, and why anything contrary to that messege can rightly be rejected, but you don’t seem to know it.
By your reasoning, if Allah must still be understood to be a reference to this pagan god of the Arabs pre-Muhammad and pre-Isalm, then Tanri must still be understood to be a reference to this pagan god of the Turks pre-Christianity. And I have a Bible that declares Jesus to be the son of this pagan god as well.
Many of the Christians in Arabia in Mohameds day were of sects that denied the divinity of Jesus. His first wiifes uncle was such a Christian. This same uncle married them and was the one who told Mohamed about his first visitation at Hira and being a prophet. The uncle never converted to Islam.
I never suggested and do not believe Mohamed understood it as the pagan moon god elevated to the God of Abraham. Your explainaton expalins it well enough as to how a word can morph its meaning. I think something extraordinary happened to Mohamed. Yes, Satan was the one who tossed him about in the cave, not Gabriel. Satan spoke many things to him that are in the Quran. Satan lied and allowed Mohamed to beleive he was sent by God.
This does not mean Muslims worship Satan. They do not. They do worship God by default in a way, not a moon god allah or a pagan god at all. It is their idea of God that Mohamed taught them that is wrong and misguided. Mohamed does not deserve all of the blame but he has his share. Satan has mocked Gods messege using Mohamed with a perversion of his own. He says so right in the Quran.
(Iblees (Satan)) said: “See? This one whom You have honoured above me, if You give me respite (keep me alive) to the Day of Resurrection, I will surely seize and mislead his offspring (by sending them astray) all but a few!”
( سورة الإسراء , Al-Isra, Chapter #17, Verse #62)
I sincerly believe Muslims think they know the God of Abraham, but they know Him through a deeply flawed man who clearly did not know God who was influenced by fear and threat and such is his messege. People like Luther and Thomas studied God for years to form their views. Right or wrong they had some understanding of God that Mohamed was oblivious to.
Being uneducated does not always mean ignorant, but I think it applies to Moahmed. Being ignorant does not mean one can’t be charasmatic, and I think he was to a degree. I don’t think Islam is rooted in paganism. I think it is paganism with a veneer of God to give it a false legitimacy. Mohamed was not a prophet of God- he was deceived by the Adversary…he didn’t buy a Rolex but a cheap immitation.
