This is a much more specific question than the current active Islam megathread, and I didn’t want to dig up an old thread, either.

Simple premise: I’ve heard mutterings on either side of the idea that Islam believes in the same God as Judaism and Catholicism, and some ferocious opinions have collided around me, so please don’t start any angry arguments.

Simple question: What is the evidence for and against this claim, whether or not you consider it valid?

I understand the answer may be complex and heated, but I really am looking only for an answer. If you feel the need to debunk a claim, please do so after stating it neutrally.

Islam, no christ
Jews, same
Christians, Christ is their head

Being a good Muslem Christ follower, Jewish Christian as well, nothing is being taken away from your current beliefs, some elements may need some minor revision, but we in no way tell people of other faiths, that to embrace ours is to ignore who you are…

Islam to be a practical third religion to follow Christianity should accept the other Two as they are, but its not the case,
  1. They claim that the Holy books of the first two religions are not authentic
  2. They claim that God the Jew and Christians follow is a liar by saying that Crucifixation never took place
  3. They don’t accept the divinity of Jesus, again claiming that God Christians follow is a liar
  4. They have no quotes in their book to assure the authencity of their book where as Holy Bible NT has so many quotes from the OT.
  5. Mohammed led a sinful life which dont suit the prophet.

islam is not from Abraham, or more so, from God, what is the second??? You fail to mention it.

There is only one God, and one religion, why is it that we have so much confusion over the matter?

From what I’ve read, Islam in the early days accepted Jews and Christians for having their own beliefs, only proclaiming pagans infidels. In fact, the idea was to reach out to the other children of Abraham as brothers, at least according to what I’ve read.

This appears more as an “agree to disagree” attitude than “proclaiming Christians liars.”

… Simple question: What is the evidence for and against this claim, whether or not you consider it valid?..
Actually, Islam has more than “evidence” for this claim since the Qur’an does indeed offer the proof.

"Then we inspired you (O Muhammad) to follow the religion of Abraham, monotheism; never was he an idol-worshiper."[16:123]

There is only One God who created one race of human beings, and communicated to them one message: submission to the will of God—known in Arabic as Islam. That message was conveyed to the first human beings on this earth, and reaffirmed by all of the prophets of God who came after them, down through the ages.

In the years after they were sent by God to their respective people, the Message that the Prophets taught gradually became lost and eventually the people went back to wrong and abhorrent practices such as idol-worship and associating partners with their Creator.

It is therefore no surprise then that at the time of Muhammad (pbuh), the pagan Arabs were worshiping idols in the Kaa’ba, despite them being the likely descendants of Abraham (pbuh) through his son, Ishmael (pbuh).

The essence of the message of Islam is that humankind should worship only One God by obeying His commandments, and should avoid worshiping God’s creation in any way, shape or form.

Jesus Christ (pbuh), born of the Virgin Mary, performed miracles and invited the Israelites to the same message of submission (Islam), as did all of the prophets who preceded him. He was not God, nor was he the ‘Son of God’, but was the Messiah, an illustrious prophet of God. Jesus did not invite people to worship himself; rather, he called them to worship God, and he himself worshiped God. He confirmed the laws of the Torah which Prophet Moses taught; he lived by them, and instructed his disciples to follow them to the finest detail. Before his departure, he informed his followers of the last prophet, Muhammad of Arabia (pbuh), who would come after him, and instructed them to observe his teachings.

In the generations after Jesus’ departure from this world, his teachings were distorted and he was elevated to the status of God. Six centuries later, with the coming of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the truth about Jesus Christ was finally retold and preserved eternally in the last book of divine revelation, the Qur’an. Furthermore, the laws of Moses, which Jesus followed, were revived in their pure and unadulterated form, and implemented in the divinely prescribed way of life known as Islam.

Consequently, the reality of the prophets, their uniform message, and the way of life which they followed, can only be found preserved in the religion of Islam, the only religion prescribed by God for man. Furthermore, only Muslims today actually follow Jesus and his true teachings. Their way of life is much more in tune with the way of life of Jesus than any of the modern day “Christians”. Love and respect of Jesus Christ is an article of faith in Islam. Allah stressed the importance of belief in Jesus in numerous places in the Qur’an. For example, in Chapter an-Nisaa (4):159, He said:

} وَ إِنْ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ إِلاَّ لَيُؤْمِنَنَّ بِهِ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يَكُونُ عَلَيْهِمْ شَهِيدًا {

“And all of the people of the scripture must believe in him [Jesus] before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them,”

Elijah, how would you feel if someone goes to your house and says your father is his father, he is your long lost brother and a real son…and after you accept him into your house he then goes on to say that your concept of your father is corrupted and you have identified your father in error and he is the final and greatest son.

THAT is exactly what Islam did.

It claims to be worshipping the same god yet claims the name of that god is not yahweh, but is allah, and then goes on to claim that your scripture is corrupted, that your messiah is not the son of god but only a prophet and their founder who historically evidenced acts of murdering, pedophilia, lying, raping, incest & cowardice etc is the greatest prophet for both him and you.

We cannot afford to be charitable when truth is at stake. Find out more here:

Historically, Islam cannot be the faith of Abraham. However, Muslims CLAIM to worship the same God as the Jews, and that would be God the Father for us.

That said, there are major issues with their understanding of that God.

I like to consider them monotheistic, not Abrahamic in nature

Just as the Jews do not consider the Christian concept of God as trinity but unity…so too does Islam believe Christianity’s view of God too is flawed. If Christianity can be considered an Abrahamic faith even though most of it’s believers are Gentiles…so to can Islam which has it’s origin among Abraham’s decendents through Ishmael, Edom and Esau.

Muhammed was highly influenced in his belief on what Christianity believed by a sect of Christianity which existed during his time…I don’t remember which sect off the top of my head. Many of the passeges of the Qur’an that seem so odd to us today concerning it’s take on what Christians believe reflect the beliefs of this Christian sect of his time.

Islam claims to be “Abrahamic”, the magisterium of the Catholic church believes they worship the same God as Christians and Jews, though imperfectly and with much misunderstanding…but the church also views the Jews view of God as lacking as they reject the triune nature of God.

“Allah” is the name “God” used by Arabic speaking Christians…“Allah” is the name “God” used by Arabic speaking Muslims. There is One God. Islam worships the One God DIFFERENTLY and with DIFFERENT UNDERSTANDINGS than either Jews or Christians…but then…so do Jews…and yet no one claims they do not worship the One God even though they deny the Trinity.

“Afterwards, Jesus finds him in the temple and said to him: Behold you are made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to you. 15 The man went his way and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole. 16 Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them: My Father works until now; and I work. 18 Hereupon therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he did not only break the sabbath but also said God was his Father, making himself equal to God. 19 Then Jesus answered and said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you, the Son cannot do anything of himself, but what he sees the Father doing: for what things soever he does, these the Son also does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all things which himself does: and greater works than these will he show him, that you may wonder. 21 For as the Father raises up the dead and gives life: so the Son also gives life to whom he will. 22 For neither does the Father judge any man: but has given all judgment to the Son. 23 That all men may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honours not the Son honours not the Father who has sent him. 24 Amen, amen, I say unto you that he who hears my word and believes him that sent me has life everlasting: and comes not into judgment, but is passed from death to life.”

1 John 5, 14-24

I believe any religion which denies the Son does not truly worship the Father.

Well, gentile Christians were “grafted in” to the family, (according to St. Paul). We don’t claim to be biological descendents of Abraham.

But I have a question about Islam’s claim: I just finished reading Genesis (again. I’m trying to read through the Bible by June, modifying my Catholic One Year Bible), so just read about Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Edom and Esau. How does Islam purport to be from the line of Ishmael? Did Muhammad claim to be a descendent? Or did he just make it up, or say it came “from a dream” (like Islam’s claim of Jerusalem being their Holy city-Muhammed never went there, he claims to have been taken there by Jesus and Moses in a dream. How convenient ) or something?

In Christ,

Ellen

Islam is the third Abrahamic religion because it pays great homage to Abraham and considers him a prophet of God, rightly practicing submission.

Pretty much any religion that pays great homage to Abraham would be considered an Abrahamic religion. Most Abrahamic religions also share some similar qualities in theology, location, and foundation. I think that Baha’i is Abrahamic but you would have to ask them.

Rastafari would also be considered Abrahamic.

Using that logic, you could say the Mormons are also the same. We should have limits here, and obviously, the koran is not a reliable source, for it had not grasped the concept of Christ, it only partially understands what he taught, case in point with the earlier post saying he taught all to follow the commandments, as in referencing the old covenant, and they miss that he fulfilled the commandments and has created a new covenant and new commandments to boot. You guys cannot say he it the messiah on one breath, then deny who he truly is, you can’t have it both ways, it doesn’t work that way.

ALLGIRLS,
Muhammad saw the Gentile Christians had their religion, the Jews had their religion but the Arabs had no religion specific to them as a people, so the birth and focus of Islam.

This is the good stuff, the real meat of what I was looking for.

Please know I didn’t mean anything by my choice of words. There are a lot of polemicists on the issue of Islam’s place beside or not beside Christianity and Judaism. You’ve a bit of that yourself, if you don’t mind me noticing. Anyway.

Where would I find a solid, neutral discussion of Islam’s place among the three major Abrahamic religions, how adherents regard its place as well as how Jews and Christians regard it? I suppose I could find one here, if there are some level-headed, well-informed posters out there.

If you want to try, please attempt to write up a perspective of Islam with the precision and depth of our Muslim advocate and with the **respect **the Holy See asks of us involved in interfaith dialogue. We don’t need a repeat of some of the comments on this topic.

hamba2han: Evidence comes with chapter and verse noted. Proof, on the other hand, is evidence accepted as the final word. I’d consider it poor form to accept even your perspective as proof without at least hearing what other similarly well-spoken advocates have to say.

What I meant as “proof” is by way of identification.

When I say that I am so and so, I would prove this by producing documents which shows my identity.

Similarly, since Muslims believe that the Qur’an is the verbatim Speech of God, then we would show what God says in the Qur’an as proof & confirmation that Muslims are indeed following the religion of Abraham (pbuh).

What this also means is that if someone says that Islam is not a true Abrahamic faith, then the onus is really on him or her to show that Muslims are not worshiping the Lord that Prophet Abraham (pbuh) worshiped.

Historically, Islam cannot be the faith of Abraham. However, Muslims CLAIM to worship the same God as the Jews, and that would be God the Father for us.

That said, there are major issues with their understanding of that God.

Why can it not be the faith of Abraham historically? Their own scripture expressly states they follow the God of Abraham, as someone else already pointed out.

(Genesis 17:17-22):

Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, "Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety? And Abraham said to God, "If only Ishmael might live under your blessing! Then God said, "Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year. When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.”
