So my understanding is (and I am not Muslim so others could clarify) that they believe in the Gospel from the perspective it is divine revelation from God, but they also believe we don’t have a true copy of what was revealed.
Hi

Your undrestanding of Muslims is true.

There is no Revealed Book of Jesus containing Word he received from GodAllahYHWH existing and secured with the Catholics; it is all “according to some apostels” not necessarilty even written/compiled by them but just ascribed to their names, Matthew,Mark, Luke and John.

This is what we Muslims maintain.

The Catholics might have a different view .

Thanks

Awalt, I apologize for being in a haste in giving my comment. I thought it is a lie for Muslims to say that they believe in the Gospel. As far as I know, they don’t.

However you have cleared the air with your explanation that they do believe in the Gospel, albeit the original Gospel. I think your explanation has been supported by paarsurrey.

Forgive me for my ignorance.

God bless.

And now I am wondering … how about the Bibles I have in my library now. What am I gonna do with them?

Thus these previous scriptures are no longer in their original form. They could best be described as edited versions of divine revelations, which have been altered from time to time by editors and commentators. So we can say that those ancient scriptures, which still exist today, have not been preserved from human interpolations. They have been tampered with at will by their adherents, who have retained the portions they wanted to and deleted the portions they disliked. Therefore, these scriptures have lost their veracity.

So my understanding is (and I am not Muslim so others could clarify) that they believe in the Gospel from the perspective it is divine revelation from God, but they also believe we don’t have a true copy of what was revealed.

You might want to read a little about this instead of calling people liars.

Peace and God bless…
From your study, can you shed some information on what this original Gospel looks like? I am now troubled, and frankly my weak faith has been shaken badly by the revelation that the Gospel that I am holding now is not the original.

I have been discussing and arguing with Muslims that there is no Gospel of Jesus and what we have is actually all that there is. Muslims nevertheless maintain that the original Gospel of Jesus had somehow disappeared and replaced by a corrupted one by people with personal agenda. I don’t believe them but this is the first time that I hear it from a Catholic. So there is no reason for me not to believe you, brother.

BTW you haven’t accept my apology. As long you don’t forgive me I will stand condemned in front of my Catholic brother.

Thank you.

Reuben.

Crikey,
We are playing tag teams insulting people!! 😊

Hi Reuben,

No apology was necessary but I certainly accept your apology humbly!

As for your question, I was just trying to explain what I thought Muslims believed (which was confirmed by paarsurrey). There are several streams of thought potentially filtering through this thread, so be sure not to get confused between them. To me they are:
  1. To articulate what Muslims believe (that they do believe in the Gospel, they just don’t believe the Gospels we have today are authentic).
  2. To defend their, and everyone’s right to worship, believe, and have opinions on whatever they think is their call from God or whoever they worship.
  3. That we as Catholics and Christians do believe in the authenticity of the Gospel and Holy Scriptures that comprise our Bible, and respecting someone else’s beliefs, and respecting them in the image and likeness of God, does not in any way influence our own beliefs (in fact it may make them stronger!).
I have in fact, just yesterday, gotten to see the Dead Sea Scrolls in San Diego (today is the last day!), I am on a trip here and was lucky to see it. Anyway, the Dead Sea Scrolls are 1000 years earlier than any documents we have ever had before as humans, and all of the OT is there! Over 900 documents (many are not scriptures, just other documents). It is very awe-inspiring to see these documents and know our Bible is authentic!

Do not believe what you are told by Muslims concerning peace. It is taught in their book, the koran, to lie for Allah. If Islam is for peace, how come there isn’t a world wide out cry from the Muslim community against Islamic terrorism?

Can you prove it from the Quran?

BTW , there is a wide out cry from muslims against terrorism. but why do you demand a wide out cry if yiou consider muslims perpetual liars any way?

Isnt it a bit strange for you to ask them to condemn terrorism and then not believe them if they did? Is this any where near rational?

i am waiting eagerly for you to solve this contradiction for me !

Oh please, read the thread before you respond. And it’s Quran not koran.

There is an outcry against terrorism, check the websites of the organizations cited in message #1, there is a huge number of organizations that have publicly condemned terrorism and acted against it. Check out the title of the thread, that might give you a hint 🙂

As for your reference to the Quran, I am Catholic but from what I have read there are certainly references that can be taken out of context to imply that. There is nothing specific that states that. And many in the Muslim community denounce that kind of violence. I suspect that will not be good enough for you, but in my opinion it’s no different than people who take things in the Bible out of context and use it to promote their own agenda.

That’s why terrorists are called “extremist” - their position is in the minority.

Please read the web sites in the first thread. Belief without a true search for truth is prejudice. As good Catholics we should be setting a much stronger example than that.

Hi Reuben,

Thanks awalt. You have rehabilitated me. 🙂
Does the Koran tell Muslims to kills Jews & Christians?
The Koran is very clear is stating that the Muslim religion is continuation of the Jewish and Christian faiths. A Muslim holds Torah and Gospels as revelations given to Jewish and Christians. A Muslim is not a Muslim if he does not believe in Torah, Gospels, Psalms and The Quran. He also believes in spiritual teachings from all the Holy Scriptures.
This is the post that is in contention.

First of all, let it be known that I am not denying whatever Muslims belief is. If they say they believe in the Gospel, so be it.

The reason for me to say that they lie goes much deeper than that. When they say they believe in the Gospel, it is NOT the Gospel that we have that they mean. Unsuspecting Christians can be taken unaware by this half-truth. In effect when they say that, they are actually telling you and I that our Gospel is a fake, corrupted and not the real thing. Unoriginal. The Gospel (Injil) that they mean is supposed to be the one written by Jesus Himself.

Therefore they think our belief is wrong because it is not based on the actual book that Jesus wrote. In their view, Christians should become Muslims if Christians truly want to follow the correct path of God. According to them all our prophets were Muslims. On their term, that is.

I just know their mentality too much; you simply cannot take the statement of them believing the Gospel at face value. I don’t truly care what they believe though. But when you paste such statement in a predominantly Catholic board, you should expect some reactions. I for one, take exception, because after all my years of experience in arguing and debating with them on this issue, it is still an issue where differences with them still exist.

I gave you a one-liner in my first post. Instead of telling me that I jumped into an erroneous conclusion, you should at least ask me why I made the statement I did. Guess it’s always easier to make conclusion than to ask, huh?

Unless somebody show me the so-called original Gospel and the evidence of its existence, I would say it is a lie for anyone to say that it once exist. Truth must be accompanied with evidence, or at least facts.

Peace.

Reuben

Just in case readers here think that this is irrelevant to the thread, I think it is relevant. For emphasis, let’s say again that the so-called original Gospel that Muslims believe was NOT the one in our New Testaments. That this imaginary Gospel did not teach nor contain these facts, at the least:
  • Jesus is the Son (with the capital S) of God and so worthy to be worship.
  • Jesus died on the cross and risen again.
  • Love your enemy as you love yourself. Turn the other cheek when you’re slapped on one.
  • Marry only one wife and do not divorce her.
The so-called original Bible must approve if not teach these:
  • Jesus did not die nor rise from the dead.
  • Jesus is not God and so not to be worshipped.
  • Destroy your enemy even if it is at the expense of your life. You will go to heaven for it.
  • Marry as many as four wives simultaneously and divorce them if you like. Do not remarry them until they sleep with another man. You can have sex with the under-aged, it is not an offence.
  • Lie to your wife in order to make her happy. Lie, if you must, in order to save your life.
  • Subjugate and humiliate those unbelieving kafirs.
Now with this kind of teachings to hold on to, one wonder why violent should not happen at all. The people who slammed jetliners unto our skyscrapers were sane, pious adherence of those teachings. They were not lunatics like what we want to believe. No one would give his lives away unless it is truly something he believes in.

We also know that NOT all Muslims agree with them or interpret their religion into killing themselves in order to kill their enemy. But the teaching is there if any Muslims want to take it up. We have to argue that rightly or wrongly, religious teachings and belief got much to do with all the violent that’s happening around us.

Peace.

Hi

The following are only relevant to us the Muslims; the rest are only stretched thoughts of our friend Reuben J; with a lot of room for improvement and or are not that important to us.
  • Jesus did not die nor rise from the dead.
  • Jesus is not God and so not to be worshipped.
  • Jesus is not the Son (with the capital S) of God and so not worthy to be worshipped.
  • Jesus did not die a cursed death on the cross and so no question of his risen again.
Thanks

I think I understand it differently than you do, but I am not an expert. Hopefuly others will correct if I misrepresent what Muslims believe.

As far as I can tell, Muslims do NOT treat some unknown Gospel document as one of their current faith documents. It does not exist. This is an argument for why they think there are problems in the Christian belief in the Bible, that is all. They are simply saying that they believe that God revealed to us through a Gospel, but the Gospel we have is incorrect so it cannot be the one God revealed. Christians of course disagree with this.

HOWEVER, the fundamental belief documents of Islam are the Quran and Sunnah, no one references some unknown verison of Gospel because, well, it doesn’t exist to the Muslims!

So the points you make that some original lost Gospel must preach, are not valid - they must be found in the Quran and/or Sunnah to be truly a part of the faith.

Which gets us back to an earlier comment, that while the teaching in the Quran can be construed to justify terrorism, from what I am learning most Muslims disagree with this interpretation. And, this is no different in principle than saying most Protestants claim that the verse in the Bible saying “Joseph had no relations with Mary until she gave birth” is clear proof she was not as virgin forever, which of course Catholics would disagree with. Many other examples exist as well.

No document - Bible, Quran, Sunnah, Torah, or other - can be so clear that all interpret it identically and correctly. At least 3000 years of mankind proves that abundantly. It is why the Catholic faith sees authority in a Magisterium and Vicar on Earth as fundamental to teaching the faith consistently to all. Context and intent of the individual can distort things significantly.

So while we are not surprised that there are 30,000 denominations of Protestants based on different interpretations of the Bible, or that there is not a single interpretation of the Jewish Torah, why do some insist that there is only one interpretation of the Torah, and that it is the extremist view?

We should not assume that just because we see extreme Muslims holding a view of the Quran, that all Muslims hold that view. It’s illogical with human nature and surely not consistent with either Christian or Jewish demoninations over the years.

Have you bothered to check any of those sites?? Google at least the first 5 with the word terrorism, and you’ll find that they’ve been linked to it!

The Quran is full of intolerant teachings against the unbelievers and you keep ignoring that using the out of context mantra!

Even a “minority” in a billion Muslims is a lot of extremists!

Just because something calls itself a “religion” does not mean it’s benign. Devil worship can be considered a “religion”, but is it good? I remember reading an article that stated that if someone took a bomb and wrote R-E-L-E-G-I-O-N on it, we gullible Americans would accept it as such. Islam isn’t only a “religion”, it’s also a dangerous political ideology firmly rooted in the 7th century that calls for cutting off the hands of thieves, stoning adulterers, executing apostates! It is not and never has been a religion of peace. “Peace” to a Muslim means when the whole world has been subjugated to Islam and all other religions and forms of government have been abolished! Make no mistake about that!

So according to you where the Quran states:

2:191 And slay them wherever ye catch them

is seen by the moderates as “love your enemies”

and

2:193 and fight them until there is no more oppression

means “pray for those who persecute you”.!

I have read with interest the post No. 153 of Awalt. I found it right in many places. It seems a balanced reasoable justified post. But at the same time the posts of booklover are not correct to the point.
There was a long struggle of brutal killings and wars between the Muslims and pagans of Makkah. That lasted about 22 years. When Makkah was liberated, the pagans were not killed at all even though they deserved the death sentence.

The prophet was good enough to pardon all. If any one converted to Islam, he was not to face any harm. If any one did not like that and wanted to remain on his old tracks then he was not to be capturd or killed. He was given four months in which he could clear off the area. What could be a better chance to get away !!

booklover has got a verse telling that after four months. catch them and kill them. But see the back ground too. It is a sort of amnesty. No harm.**

Stop chanting generalities, and state some facts form the Quran if you believe that. And don’t just post a sentence, give us context for that sentence. We all know you can make the Bible say anything you want if you just take one verse of out context.

No, but do you have any knowledge of what the Quran says a Jihad is? And where moderate Muslims believe it is to be applied?

Vickie I don’t know why you think the fact that extreme Muslims exist mean all MUslims believe the same. Do all Christians believe the same thing of the Bible? Why are there 30,000+ denominations of Christians? Do all Jews believe the same thing?

Show us 1 religion of at least 100,000,000 people who all believe the exact same thing. To promote a position like this is pretty prejudicial and not based in fact. It’s also not very Christian.

Do Muslims put themselves in the shoes of the unbelievers which they oppress and consider dhimmies??

Vickie
Take a deep breath Vickie. Here’s a quote from a Muslim on Jihad, I am sure you can find more if you decide to search for a more balanced truth and not stand by such prejudice of all billion+ Muslims:
Islamic scholar Jamal Badawi, chairman of the Islamic Information Foundation in Halifax, insists that a jihad is `permitted only in self-defense or against tyranny and oppression–not as a tool to promote Islam.’’
