TABGHA, Israel — A fire ripped through one of the most famous Catholic churches in the Holy Land on Thursday, damaging the roof and burning prayer books in what authorities believe is an attack by Jewish extremists.

The fire broke out at the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fish in the middle of the night, causing extensive damage to the inside and outside of the building, said Israel police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

The modern building is built on the remains of a fifth-century Byzantine church and features a Byzantine mosaic floor that was not harmed. The church marks the traditional spot of Jesus’ miracle of the loaves and fish, and is located on the shore of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel. It is one of the most popular stops for Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land.

There were also reports of graffiti found near the Church condemning idolatry.

Actually, I didn’t realize it, but the news bot beat me to this story by fourteen minutes.

If it was a muslim group it would get ten times the coverage.

It won’t be just Al-Aqsa that will not be around if things continue as they are; I don’t expect any of our holy places to be around 100 years from now.

As Pope Francis was expected for a visit to Israel there was much vandalism of monasteries and churches. One teenager even quoted Isaiah to justify how the Pope should not even be allowed to enter Jerusalem. A radio personality said that the ‘time was not right’ - yet and for them to tone it down.

People just chose to ignore the threats because it is not ‘in’ to respond to it, but, they jump in the bandwagon to attack the Muslims.

They call them “price tag” attacks. They are usually committed by settlers.

If ISIS was doing these arson and vandalism attacks, every American news channel would be talking about it. It looks like the attacks are reprisals from the Israeli settlers because Pope Francis planned to recognize a free state for the Palestinians.

Unfortunate news. May the Churches of the Middle east be protected from the extremists.

May God will more Jews, Muslims and Christians of the ME to work together, as working together is the way to go.

These are not reprisals for any specific action by Pope Francis. Attacks on Christians and Christian property are committed with considerable frequency by extremist settlers. The extremists hate Palestinian Christians as much as they hate Palestinian Muslims. They have even left graffiti in the past threatening to crucify Christians.
