Israel 'ready for escalation' of Gaza conflict

At least 15 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip as Israel launches a major air and sea offensive against the militant group Hamas.

It comes in response to Hamas firing more than 130 rockets at Israeli cities since Monday night.

On Tuesday evening, militants launched several rockets towards Jerusalem but did not hit the city, Israeli police said.

Israel has warned it may send ground troops into Gaza to stop the attacks.

It has authorised the call-up of up to 40,000 military reservists. Hundreds of reservists have already been drafted to bolster forces around Gaza.

Hamas said all Israelis were now targets.

Palestinian Minister of Public Works and Housing Mufeel al-Hasayneh said 50 houses were destroyed on Tuesday and 1,700 were partially damaged.

Palestinian medics reported at least 25 dead, including six killed in an airstrike that flattened an apartment building in southern Gaza and set off widespread panic.

Israel won’t destroy Hamas because they don’t want ISIS like groups to take over in Gaza.

Maybe you’re right, but I’m not sure there’s much to choose between them.​

Given what we have seen in Iraq, the IDF will stop at nothing to keep ISIS from getting a toehold in the region.
 
A dear young friend in Tel Aviv sent me a message today. It read in part:

“hope everything is ok and i find you in peace, our situation hear is bad, we are in war and we cant leave our houses it feels so bad”

She was married just three weeks ago.

God bless them all!
 
No, this doesn’t look good, does it. Oh well, I’m sure John Kerry and Putin can come up with something…

Israel is serious about this. As another poster said - this could get
messy.
 
This thread hasn’t been updated in three days, and the death toll in Gaza is now over 100. Tragically, many (though not all) are innocent civilians. Israel is trying to minimize the deaths of civilians, but the very nature of urban conflict makes this difficult. The task is all the more difficult when the fighters in Gaza use civilian facilities to disguise their activities. Israel is feeling pressure to explain its airstrikes in the face of such difficulties.

The briefing was an apparent effort to rebuff growing international alarm at the rising death toll from the airstrikes in Gaza — 120 so far, according to Palestinian officials — and the calls for restraint.

Meanwhile we have the death toll in the ukranian-russian skirmish no one seems too concerned about.

I don’t know how intelligence gathers information about missile and weapons caches. Must be scary.

Glad the iron dome is working for Israel.
 
The US, the UN, everybody has to do everything they can to stop this conflict from escalating. Israel (our ally in the region) is fighting for its existence in hostile territory and the Obama administration is nowhere to be found. The Palestinians are also dying and suffering horribly under the Israeli attacks.
 
ISRAEL ORDERS RESIDENTS OF NORTHERN GAZA TO LEAVE
JERUSALEM (AP) – The Israeli military says it is ordering Palestinians living in the northern Gaza Strip to evacuate the area “for their own safety.”

In a statement Saturday, the military said it would send messages to residents overnight to leave the area.

Brig. Gen. Motti Almoz, the chief military spokesman, said Israel planned to hit the area with heavy force in the next 24 hours as it steps up an offensive against Gaza militants.

I don’t think that is known. The rockets which struck in the area of Hebron and Bethlehem seem to have originated from Gaza. However, the rockets could have been fired by Hamas, or by Islamic Jihad, or possibly by a different militant organization.
