It is a sign of the deplorable state of American strategic thinking that the Speaker of the House can think of nothing better than to act as mouthpiece for the Netanyahu government.

o.
Does he represent American strategic thinking ?

As a foreigner I ask myself if US with its democratic values would take political sides between two democracies. I mean the national values concerned and fostered, not our individual values or opinions. This is a question I am failing to find an answer to.I am by no means questioning your personal positions,I would like to understand the national perspective if you will.

What sounds hard to disentangle is democracy/ Hamas/ Palestinian people
I do not find hard to find humanitarian reasons. That sounds very clear to me.
The balance between " against Hamas ideology" , “for the Palestinian people in the street” and " for any nation’s right of self defense." and " for the right of nations to choose their leaders"

And further still, the complexity of each step in this network of alliances.

Ultimately, what values prevail. From their perspectives.
I may be wrong,I am just asking myself.

Hamas’s secret Gaza command center revealed — and why reporters won’t write about it

The idea that one of Hamas’ main command bunkers is located beneath Shifa Hospital in Gaza City is one of the worst-kept secrets of the Gaza war. So why aren’t reporters in Gaza ferreting it out? The precise location of a large underground bunker equipped with sophisticated communications equipment and housing some part of the leadership of a major terrorist organization beneath a major hospital would seem to qualify as a world-class scoop—the kind that might merit a Pulitzer, or at least a Polk.

So why isn’t the fact that Hamas uses Shifa Hospital as a command post making headlines? In part, it’s because the location is so un-secret that Hamas regularly meets with reporters there. On July 15, for example, William Booth of the Washington Post wrote that the hospital “has become a de facto headquarters for Hamas leaders, who can be seen in the hallways and offices.” Back in 2006, PBS even aired a documentary showing how gunmen roam the halls of the hospital, intimidate the staff, and deny them access to protected locations within the building—where the camera crew was obviously prohibited from filming. Yet the confirmation that Hamas is using Gaza City’s biggest hospital as its de facto headquarters was made in the last sentence of the eighth paragraph of Booth’s story—which would appear to be the kind of rookie mistake that is known in journalistic parlance as “burying the lede.”

But Booth is no rookie—he’s an experienced foreign reporter, which means that he buried the lede on purpose. Why? Well, one reason might be that the “security sources” quoted whenever the location of the Hamas command bunker is mentioned—which, as evidenced by this 2009 article by the excellent and highly experienced foreign correspondent Steven Erlanger of the New York Times, happens every time there’s a war in Gaza—are obviously Israelis, not members of Hamas. It might be hard to believe the Israelis, the simple logic might run, since they obviously have an investment in arguing that Hamas is using hospitals and schools as human shields.

The Speaker of the House is not part of the national security team, so no, he really isn’t necessarily representative of strategic thinking.

Various reports on the Hospital. French journalist was detained there on the 24th for interrogation by Hamas.

Radjaa Abu Dagga, Gaza correspondent for France’s Libération, told the newspaper‘s readers on Tuesday how Hamas refused his requests to leave Gaza and how he was interrogated by Hamas members from their headquarters inside Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital, a violation of international rules of war.

Hamas refused cease-fire again.

The UN’s relief agency has found a stash of rockets in a third school belonging to it.

UNRWA said it found a rocket cache in one of its central Gaza schools on Tuesday, the third such incident.

“This is yet another flagrant violation of the neutrality of our premises. We call on all the warring parties to respect the inviolability of U.N. property,” spokesman Chris Gunness said.

He added that UNRWA would find it impossible to cope with a further influx of refugees to its shelters, warning that tens of thousands of people would soon be stranded on Gaza’s streets.

UNRWA says its shelters are at a breaking point, with more than 200,000 refugees. In addition, an UNRWA physician, and his brother, were killed in the fighting on Tuesday.

I thought Israel just wants Hamas to stop killing their citizens?
And if it were strategic thinking it would not be disclosed, would it?

I am fine with your thoughts. In fact everybody’s thoughts and sharing in this thread . Everybody contributes from different perspectives. I appreciate that,Gillian. It is easy to negotiate in good faith:)

It is the people involved in this conflict, their views, perceptions, positions, interests and values what I am trying to understand from their perspectives and dynamics. As one who is outside the conflict.

Thanks for this thread,Gillian.

Not necessarily. But he ought to, in his public statements, show some recognition that he is a spokesman for the United States, not some foreign land.

Israel’s Gaza rampage is a direct threat to the safety of Americans abroad. The Speaker ought to recognize that.

Well,it sounds that prudence is always welcome.

You have repeatedly expressed concern for Americans abroad,I can understand that.

Thanks,Gnjsdad.

**Chile and Peru recall Israel envoys over Gaza operation **

The war in Gaza has led to a serious crisis in Israel’s relations with Latin America. The foreign ministries of Chile and Peru have announced they are calling their ambassadors in Tel Aviv in consultation to protest Israel’s operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The moves comes on the heels of Brazil and Ecuador, who announced last week that they were recalling their envoys.

That’s too bad. Either they don’t understand that israel is merely defending itself. -OR- they don’t want Israel to defend itself.

They bombed the Argentine priest Hernández parish in Gaza

It is the Sacred Family catholic parish… It is the refuge of 29 disabled children ,nine elderly women assisted by three nuns. The bombs destroyed the house of the nuns of the Incarnate W.Institute, parochial school, the office of the priest and other local facilities. There were no injuries. The priest Jorge Hernandez refuses to evacuate Gaza.

OR…

They realize what is really going on in Gaza and putting the blame where it lies.

Israel Bombs Gaza back to Stone Age: Razes only Power Plant & Plunges Strip into Darkness

Gaza can no longer generate its own electricity. Without electricity, the water purification plants cannot operate and the drinking water ends up being mixed with sewage or salt water. Without electricity, patients on life support in the hospitals just die, even if Israel does not bomb the hospital, as it has in some instances. The power plant will take the good part of a year to rebuild even after the war ends. Gaza gets some electricity from Israel and Egypt, but many of those lines have been damaged in the fighting.

Bombing the power plant is undoubtedly a war crime.

I have been very reluctant to use the term until now, but what Israel is doing to the Palestinian population in Gaza can arguably be called genocide.

The German’s do it, the British do it, the Russians , Americans, and Japanese do it, its only genocide when the Jews do it?

Its called war?

If the Israeli mission were the genocide of the Palestinian people, the latter would be long gone. The goal of Hamas, however, is more in line with genocide.

be called genocide.
Its the Hamas Doctrine “for sure”.

They have the right to defend themselves from that agenda.

Egyptian mediators prepared a revised proposal for the conflict with Islamist guerrillas. Israel’s Channel 2 said progress was being made on such a deal in Cairo-Egypt as we speak. Egypt has spoken clear it won’t open the border unless the Gaza side is run by Abbas. The militant group took over the territory in 2007.
