IT IS FORBIDDEN to name your guardian angel

What is the difference between giving your angel a name and just leaving it as “My Guardian Angle?” the devil works in crazy ways and could just as easily reveal himself to you claiming that he is your angel and giving himself a name just as easily as he could if you yourself gave your angel a name. I have thought about giving my angel a name because ive met my angel…he saved my life when i was a little girl. and when i pray to him to help me or keep me safe it would be nice to be able to call him something. it makes it more personal.🙂

Let’s just hope your “Guardian Angle” isn’t obtuse. 😃

Kidding aside … “Guardian Angel” is an accurate title. Since said angel already has a name provided by God your act, however well-meaning, is one of pretentiousness. It cannot be his true name, and is therefore a nickname. Do you really wish to give a being of such power and majesty a pet name? Seems inappropriate, doesn’t it?

In addition, the practice is discouraged by the Church, as evidenced by some of the quotes in this thread. You really shouldn’t need any more than that to prevent such action.
 
Well, i agree that it is a wise idea to be careful-watchful and not name your guardian angel(s).
There are enough devilry in this world, why give it another bone to chew on?
 
Well, as long as i get to find out his name when i die. lol But we have more then one angel as well. Which i found to be pretty cool. And we can send them ahead of us and ask them to protect other things for a little while. I thought that was very amazing when i learned that.🙂
 
I would not personally dabble in the naming of ny guardian Angel unless he actually appeared to me and allowed it,it just seems to me that calling your Angel Harry or Betty for example borders on new age practise.
Does anyone actualy know where this naming trend began?
 
Wow. Everybody but me knows the name of their guardian angel? I don’t know who I might tell but ummm, why do they reveal it to you? What is the point if it is necessary to keep it secret anyway?
 
well, like i said, i have met mine. No joke. Its a pretty good story as well. and having met him, it would have been nice to know his name…but he vanished before my parents had a chance to ask.

I agree with everything in all your posts except for the above quote which is in one of your posts from 12/31/10. Our Catholic faith teaches us and warns us about the power of the devil very clearly. We know and understand this far better than anyone from any other faith. There may be individuals who call themselves Catholic who fail to appreciate the power of Satan but I wouldn’t paint Catholics in general with such a broad brush.

Having said that, I do believe that there has been a general watering down of the catechesis in our Church over the past 40 years so that many aspects of our faith are misunderstood or not understood at all by a large segment of our faithful.

Everyone would do well to read and understand very carefully the points you have made. I think you are right on.

  1. I don’t give credence or press to evil
  2. Evil is vane and lives for press and fear…neither of which I plan to give it
  3. My angel’s name is Daniel…or maybe it’s not his name…it makes no nevermind.
It was just amusing to find out. I felt bad for my friend that she had to make a pilgrimage to Conyers Georgia with a van load of “Catholics” to see the sun dance on video…(which by the way…will do that…if you are trying to video tape the sun)…

There is a point and I do have one…that people who are desparate will believe almost anything…🤷

Going to extremes on anything is usually pretty dangerous. I think you are going to the extreme in denying the presence of evil and that is as dangerous as focusing on evil entirely. The presence and power of evil can be seen all throughout scripture and in our every day lives. If you deny its power or its very existence then you are defenceless against it because you can’t even recognize it. Healthy FEAR of danger is a good thing, both is the physical realm and in the spiritual realm. If you do not fear evil you are a sitting duck. I don’t say let it paralyze you but you should certainly fear it and avoid it. Wake up, evil is all around us.

“Put on the armor of God that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11

“Put on the armor of God that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything to hold your ground” Ephesians 6:13

Still think evil is overblown???

Now, you are correct, desperate people can be misled but its difficult to argue with the bible.
 
To be perfectly honest, I never give a moment’s thought to my guardian angel, which is a tribute to him, considering that if he is doing his job well that my loving attention is fixed entirely on God and on my brothers and sisters in the faith without distraction.

Whatever works for you. I personally believe we are given guardian angels and the communion of Saints for a reason. I don’t think they are intended to be, nor should they be, a distraction. They should be assistance to us in our journey to God and to overcoming the trials and temptations that we face. Just as a husband and wife help and support each other on their faith journey in this physical world, angels and saints assist us on a spiritual level.

Nothing wrong with focusing on God, you should do that. But enlisting the assistance of angels and saints should not be mutually exclusive with worship of God, they can actually help us in our worship by leading us and showing us the way. God doesn’t do things just for the heck of it. There must be a reason why he gave us the angels and saints and makes sure we know about them.

Does this mean that you will never be a witness for Jesus because someone might try to refute what you say? If you are certain you have the truth, share it. If someone doesn’t accept it, so what. Sharing your faith should not be a “game”.

If there ARE Saints who found the name of their Guardian Angel it does not mean they were decieved but it does not mean it is something we should ALL endeavour to do either. Saints are clearly on a different plane than the rest of us and are perhaps endowed with greater wisdom than the rest of us such that they are better able to discern any attempts at deception that Satan may try.

Just some food for thought.
 
I have heard that our angel has already been given an name, and we have too been given a name. I have thought of giving my angel a name, but could never come up with one that felt right.

I think this is one of the most beautiful things I have read on CAF Forums. I´m going to copy and print this out so I don´t loose it. I´d love to memorize it. BTW, it´s not “Venerable” anymore. Cardenal Newman is now BLESSED, thanks be to God. I´m English. What´s more, I´m a convert from protestantism, so C. Newman is a BIG favourite of mine.

I had an experience with my guardian angle the other day. I was in bed and about to go to sleep when I remembered I hadn´t set my alarm clock. I always try to get up early to pray. I didn´t want to get out of bed, because that would involve turning the light on again, and I would certainly wake my wife. So I said a quick prayer to my G.A. I simply asked him/her to wake me up at 7:00.

The next morning when I woke up and looked at my watch, it was EXACTLY 7:00. I promply got out of bed and prayed Lauds. I realize I can´t rely on my GA as an alarm clock; it´s up to me to wake up at a reasonable time. It was a one-off favour I asked for, and he seemed to think my motives were worth while.

Hope I didn´t bore anyone. 😉
 
Great post Santodomingo, not a bore at all. Welcome home to the Catholic Church. As Cardinal Newman once said, to be steeped in history is to cease to be Protestant.

I didn’t see anything wrong at the time - but seeing this topic discussed occasionally makes me wonder. I meant no harm - and surely, God knows that. But one has to wonder how I was talking to my Guardian Angel - and got lost.

That makes your angel sound vindictive because you were taking liberties. Is it possible that you got lost because your mind was wandering and maybe your angel is the one
who sent the truckdriver?
