It Turns Out Conservatives Really Are Compassionate

I think you’ll find you are taxed the same on the same amount of money, wherever you are on the political spectrum.

No-one doubts that Americans prefer to make their own individual choices for donating to charity, and that they are in general a very generous people. The problem is that this way charities are forced into a popularity contest to attract the most money, which I find rather unappealing. When done through government, the opportunity is there for causes that are important but unpopular to get a fairer share.

Mike
I think I prefer to give to the charities of my chose. I think I do a better job.

That probably applies to the ‘volunteering’ part. Dunno about the blood donation - but then blood donation has very strict laws about who is eligable to do so (I’m not allowed, for example, as I had a transfusion a few years ago). Maybe the average liberal ‘lifestyle’ (more likely to be gay, for example?) explains this.

Mike
When I was in college, there was a very stauch liberal on the same floor in my dorm.

He didn’t donate blood in the blood drive, he was afraid of the needle.

That kind of describes the liberal view on charity.

To a conservative, charity is something we personally do, in most cases, it is because God told us to do so.

To a liberal, it is a matter of making others provide charity under threat of imprisonment.

Some toothless hillbilly with five children wearing second-hand clothes will dig deep and give you one of the two $10 bills she has in her purse. The lady in the Humvee and the $200 hairdo will climb the wall of the store to avoid someone holding out a tin cup.
Ridgerunner,

Perhaps you did not notice it, but I really believe that these stereotypes are insulting. One woman is a toothless hillbilly with lots of children and the other is a lady with a large car. I’ve known plenty of people who were poor and were not hillbillies and even had all their teeth.

Additionally, I have all my teeth, no children yet and a nice car that I purchased used. And I would rarely if ever give to anyone holding out a tin cup. My husband and I discuss our charitable donations at home. We prayerfully decide which organizations we want to donate to and how much money we want to give. We only give to organizations that we believe in and have done research on. I will not give to an organization that I’m unfamiliar with, though I may familiarize myself and then give.

My aversion to being asked for money while I’m at the grocery store has absolutely nothing to do with my actual generosity.

God bless.

Am I really supposed to remember what I wrote over 2 months ago? 🙂

That doesn’t seem a bad reason! I used to be afraid of needles too, and very squeamish at the sight of blood. Spending 4 months in hospital with probably about 6 needles a day stuck into you is a good cure for that, mind.

I know various people of all sorts of political outlook. The two who regularly give blood are two of the most liberal. I would too if I were allowed, but I’m not.

Mike

Of course; we all think that. That was precisely my point.

Mike
And why should we think that government can do any better? Especially when the ability to use religion as part of the work is severely limited when one is government funded?

The work of Faith based programs on overcoming addiction and staying out of prison are noteable more sucessful than their secular counterparts, but the abilty to use Faith as a tool in those programs is severly restricted.

Or how about the Boston Catholic Charities who had to stop assisting in adoptions because the MA government wanted them to act against Catholic moral principles.

Why should I support taxes to run less effective (or immoral) secular programs when a privately funded agency is so superior.

I can understand the immoral part but what is worse? Having your taxes go to a program, that although needs little/much improvement, that helps a few versus just taking the funds and thus the program and thus helping no one?

How about being proactive and say. Good idea but before I spend my money lets fix the program.

Like No Child Left Behind Act which I believe personally as many do, is a profound program which this country desperately needed. I love the principles of this. But sadly the people who are overseeing this are saying this is desperately underfunded (individual states are saying same thing) and leaving the programs virtually in a quagmire.

I’d rather help the people than a program…

Is it not the goal of the “program” to bring together society to help the less fortunate? Is it not the goal of the “program” to help all of society to move forward?

Is the will of one person stronger than the will of a nation coming together?

I think you have it right there; the Left are concerned with creating a just society.
Given the Left’s penchant for abortion-on-demand and other forms of legalized mass murder, that is, at best, a highly questionable premise.

I like our comment Mark. In fact I have spoken to many Democrats who are strong on abortion making their case they are for social justice. I remind them that not many will take pro-choice Democrats seriously towards social justice, when they do not protect the life of a child in the womb.

But also many man Republicans can not be taken seriously because of their voting records either. Just as immoral and anti-life in many perspectives.

Quite often this is true, but it hardly excuses Leftists from trying to assume the high moral ground given the fact Leftists have soaked the earth with the blood of more than 100,000,000 people in the 20th century alone.

Utopianism always leads to murder.

Our current governments war (started overwhelmingly by conservatives in power)in Iraq has killed how many? Do you add this to the contribution of the 100,000,000 you have stated?

The current war was started by the large majority of conservatives, liberals, moderates, and independents in Congress. Let’s not distort the record in an attempt to make an irrelevant point.

While no one is innocent, nothing compares to the bloodshed perpetrated by Leftist regimes in the 20th century.

Is this “leftist regime” in congress looking to start a war? Did Roosevelt, Wilson start WW1 and 2?

Completely irrelevant and off-topic.

The facts are these: When Leftists are in power, the rights of people, especially the right to life, invariably end up threatened and violated. Maybe not right away, but it does invariably happen. This is part of the reason why the Church has rejected all forms of collectivism and denounced socialism.

What’s more, people with conservative view points informed by religious motivations are demonstrably more compassionate and caring than others. This is also part of the reason why the Church has rejected all forms of collectivism and denounced socialism.

You are confusing what the church teaches about government’s responsibility towards protecting the rights and welfare of it’s citizens versus total socialism (communisism).
Why does the USCCB continue to lobby and write to Congress and the Executive office to keep them from voting out budgets which negitively affect the poor?
