Pope Francis has nominated the successor of Polish cardinal Grocholewski as head of the Congregation that looks after universities and schools that are dependent on the Church

Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi as the new Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education. He leaves the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See (a body which is due to disappear under the new Curia reform plan) and takes over from Polish cardinal Zenon Grocholewski…
…The choice of a cardinal who is very close to Bertone as the new “minister” of Catholic education shows that Francis is continuing to lead the Church, valuing and making the contribution of individuals he inherited from his predecessor. The nomination is also part of the process of Roman Curia restructuring: the creation of a Secretariat for the Economy and possible new mergers on the horizon will mean that some clerics who currently lead structures that are either going to be removed or merged, will have to be given other functions and transferred to other offices.

Cardinal Versaldi was born in 1943 and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Vercelli in 1967. He was vicar general under the later Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone and was appointed as Bishop of Alessandria (della Paglia) in 2007. In 2011 he came to Rome to become President of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See. In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI created him Cardinal-Deacon of Sacro Cuore di Gesù a Castro Pretorio. The cardinal is a member of the Congregation for Bishops, the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, and the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura.
In 2013, Cardinal Versaldi showed himself to be firmly in the camp of those who see no merit in changing the Church’s teaching on marriage.
