If you do not like the Kool-aid poisoning you, do not drink it.

FYI - I tried to follow some of the links to check this out, I went four cycles deep, LSN was still self-linking. They are their own source.

There are several articles from a wide variety of sources that indicate there is some bad blood between this politician and Pope Francis. It’s not just lifesite reporting these things.

It is the spin, not that the Pope did not meet with him. The Pope hasn’t met with me either. Nationalism is a tricky business in Europe. I do not know Italian politics today, but if one is waving their Catholicism as a flag, and is not in accord with Catholicism too much, it might not be prudent to be seen as endorsing such a one. The point is, the OP should, as a matter of charity, give the Holy Father the benefit of the doubt. Those who claim to be Catholic and report on this, should give the Holy Father the benefit of the doubt. Those that do not are possibly anti-Catholic, or simply more politically-oriented that Christ-oriented.

Of course the Pope hasn’t met with you or me. Why would he? There isn’t a purpose for him to, and neither of us has asked him. At least I haven’t asked to meet him. From what I have read, there seems to be reasons to meet with this man (and many others he also won’t meet).

If this were a one time thing I would be inclined to believe this is overblown. Pope Francis has a long history though of meeting with certain groups that oppose Catholicism while shunning faithful Catholics. I understand the concerns and I share the frustration of seeking answers only to be met with people accusing hate for the Church.

Being shamed for wanting to understand or having concerns and confusion makes it harder to trust. How can we understand if we aren’t able to ask questions? Why are questions and concerns met with either dismissals or accusations of being anti Catholic?

I have tried for years to give the Pope the benefit of the doubt. I have worked hard to attempt to explain away things that really can’t be explained. And when I asked my first question truly seeking answers, I was accused of hating the Church and the Pope and told that anyone not 100% behind the Pope is no longer Catholic.

That is unfortunate if you were made to feel that way. I know also that it can seem like you’re chasing your tail. However, I think my initial advice is best. If one is being poisoned by gossip about the Pope, then simply avoid gossip, or at least try to understand that which the Pope is trying to teach before assuming the problem is always him. It might be that a question means we have something to learn. It might also be as simple as the perception of the man through the political lens of the media leaves a terribly distorted image.

Interior Minister and anti-migrant Euroskeptic League party leader Matteo Salvini can’t call himself a Christian after brandishing a rosary during a Milan rally of rightist nationalist European leaders, an Italian bishop said Monday.
So the same for politicians who identify as Catholic but support abortion and so called homosexual ‘marriage’?

Of course not. We can’t know what is really in their hearts or what they have told their confessors so they must be given the benefit of the doubt. 😏

Every pope has met with sinners.

The pope does not want to give what could be seen as endorsement to an Italian political candidate.

Salvini held a rally where the pope was mocked and rosaries were displayed while mocking the pope. That’s not what rosaries are for.

Salvini is from the “Lega” party. It used to be “Lega Nord”, a party that believed the south of Italy was a drain on the north, and was even against southern Italians relocating to the north.

I don’t know anything about Italian politics, but as for the Pope, you don’t have to like him or think he’s doing a good job. But you should love him–that is, pray for His good. Here’s a good, traditional prayer for him:
ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, have mercy upon Thy servant Francis, our Supreme Pontiff, and direct him according to Thy loving kindness in the way of eternal salvation; that, of Thy gift, he may ever desire that which is pleasing unto Thee and may accomplish it with all his might. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Were “questions” asked about JPII and Benedict by these same segments of the Church- not really.

Folks just like what they see as the politics of the Pope so they criticize him.

I agree with all you say; but if the pope hasn’t met with you, a distinguished member of CAF, I am a little concerned. Good point about Italian politics, as well as giving Pope Francis the benefit of the doubt before being critical of him.

Power play: Papal aide’s manhole act angers Italy’s Salvini

“One talks about money, but that’s not the first problem. There are the children. So the first question to be posed is — why are they there, for what reason?”

In a text message to The Associated Press, the cardinal, declining an interview, said of his actions: “The gesture speaks for itself.”
So if it is okay to break the law for a political agenda then can we expect the Cardinal to break into abortion mills to disconnect the electricity to prevent abortions?

This is exactly what I mean. No one addresses the questions and instead attacks the questioner.

I seriously have been struggling to understand. I have been a faithful Catholic my entire life, especially during very difficult times. I do pray for the Pope. As someone from South America I was so proud and happy when we got our first pope from this side of the world. I defended his statements for several years. I do not in any way HATE the pope. I am simply trying to understand. Any help with that? Or just more attempts to belittle?

As the years go by I am struggling more and more with understanding. And I am become more and more convinced that I should just walk away. Thanks for helping to make my decision easier.
