Very sad. I wonder what his reasoning would be this late in life. Hopefully he will return to the fold before his death.

He should be given three separate warnings to withdraw from this organization and some time to do so.
If, after three warnings and some leeway time, he refuses to withdraw from the Masons, he should be formally excommunicated. But doesn’t joining masonry carry with it
Latae-Sentiae (ipso facto) Excommunication??

Why three. One is sufficient.

I see your point, Mike.
But Peter didn’t try to JOIN the Sanhedrin.

Still, scripture calls for admonishing the sinner two or three times, then a public rebuke, then if no response, then expulsion from the congregation.

God bless,

Pax tecum!

The first time, we are to go to them ourselves. If the refuse to repent, we are to go with two witnesses. If they refuse then, we are to go to the Church. Then if they still refuse, they are to be “as a gentile or tax collector”. However, joining the Masons does indeed carry the penalty of ipso facto excommunication, so in this the priest has already excommunicated himself.

I thought joining the Masons was now covered by canon 1374, which does not specifically prescribe excommunication? (And certainly not one imposed without process?)
Can. 1374 A person who joins an association which plots against the Church is to be punished with a just penalty - one who promotes or takes office in such an association is to be punished with an interdict.
Pray that this error may be corrected,
tee
