Yeah, I can see how this priest is captivated by Sophia Loren’s ‘‘inner’’ beauty

😃
👍 …definitely a smiling matter I thought…I noted too Father is a moral theologian and thought to myself “maybe consoluting a moral theologian is not quite like it used to be”😃

Anyone who accesses one of the websites of those Orders attracting young vocations and pictures of them can see that they are very attractive young women who have given their lives to God in response to a call from Him. I really dont think a beauty pageant is remotely connected in any way to religious life and to have one conveys a completely incorrect image of a religious vocation. If anything, a beauty pageant is in opposition to religious life which has nothing at all to do with physical attractiveness or non attractiveness and may convey a totally false impression. If anything, a beauty pageant adopts standards of this world and applies them to a life that has abandoned the standards of this world.

Chalk and cheese!

I really don’t think we do have an image of nuns and religious sisters being old and dowdy as the stereotypical image.

I think Father is a bit off beam decidedly.

Is a beauty pageant for nuns something the world really needs? Is it something the nuns really need? What next? Papal pinups? Sorry, I just don’t see the point. Worse yet, it seems to trivialize the vocation of our sisters. Maybe I’m just a bit sour today, but I’m kind of turned off by the whole thing.

Fr. Rungi notes that “beauty is a gift from God”. Shouldn’t that beauty be reserved for a nun’s Divine Spouse and not put on public display? Isn’t that essentially what women’s religious orders are all about? It seems to me Fr. Rungi doesn’t take women - or women religious - very seriously. And his "rosaries on the beach’ remind me of a report I saw this weekend about an outdoor church at an old drive-in movie theatre where congregants can stay in their cars and listen to the sermon on original drive-in speakers. Just one more gimmick that gets a few minutes of press.

ROME — An Italian priest and theologian said Sunday he is organizing an online beauty pageant for nuns to give them more visibility within the Catholic Church and to fight the stereotype that they are all old and dour.

The “Miss Sister 2008” contest will start in September on a blog run by the Rev. Antonio Rungi and will give nuns from around the world a chance to showcase their work and their image.

“Nuns are a bit excluded, they are a bit marginalized in ecclesiastical life,” Rungi told The Associated Press after Italian media carried reports of the idea. “This will be an occasion to make their contribution more visible.”
Rungi, a theologian and schoolteacher from the Naples area, said that visitors to his site will have a month to “vote for the nun they consider a model.”

Nuns will fill out a profile including information about their life and vocation as well as a photograph. It will be up to them to choose whether to pose with the traditional veil or with their heads uncovered.
:ehh:

“Do you really think nuns are all wizened, funereal old ladies?” father Rungi said.

An Italian Roman Catholic priest is planning a first-of-its-kind online beauty pageant for nuns to show that nuns do not fit the stereotype of being old and sad, The Times reported on Monday, August 25.

“Do you really think nuns are all wizened, funereal old ladies?” father Antonio Rungi said.

“Today it’s not like that any more.”

Rungi, a Roman Catholic priest of the southern diocese of Modragone, is organizing the first “Sister Italy” online beauty pageant.

Starting next month, he will post on the pageant’s website the photos of nuns who wish to contest.

Rungi says nuns from around the world, not only Italians, will have a chance to showcase their work and their image.

The pictures will be accompanied by an account by the nun of her life, spiritual development, the order to which she belongs and the duties she performs, in a bid to give voters an idea of the participant’s personality.

Internet surfers can then vote for their favorite nun online.

Father Rungi says he expects roughly 1,000 nuns to take part in the online competition.

He hopes the online pageant would soon become a “real pageant” along the lines of the annual Miss Italy contest.

Controversial

Father Rungi says the pageant idea was suggested to him by nuns with whom he regularly prays and works.

“Many have assured me they will take part,” said the progressive theologian, who has his own blog.

Contestants can decide whether they appear in their traditional veil or not but they will not be photographed in bathing suits, revealing outfits or evening gowns.

Rather, aspirants to the title will be expected to reveal something of their lives and miracles.

“There is also such a thing as a chaste ideal, which comes from the heart and the soul, and has a beneficial effect on those who come into contact with it.”

The contest, however, drew criticism from conservative Catholics.

“I have had some e-mails from Christians who perhaps have not grasped the evangelizing spirit of the initiative, or the potential of the internet, which is a marvelous tool for spreading the Christian message,” Father Rungi admits.

“Unfortunately, some people still have a closed mentality.”

But Alberto Giannino, president of the association of Catholic teachers, insists its more than that.

“It’s an initiative that belittles the role of nuns who have dedicated themselves to God.”

*"Priest to hold nun beauty pageant

An Italian priest says he is organising the world’s first beauty pageant for nuns to erase a stereotype of them as being old and dour.

Antonio Rungi says The Miss Sister Italy online contest will start on his blog in September.

“Nuns are above all women and beauty is a gift from God,” he told Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper.

He is asking nuns to send their photos to him, saying that internet users will then choose the winner.

Father Rungi stressed that nuns were not being invited to parade in bathing suits, saying it will be up to them whether they pose with the traditional veil or with their heads uncovered.

“This contest will be a way to show there isn’t just the beauty we see on television but also a more discreet charm,” the priest, who lives near the southern city of Naples, told the Corriere della Sera.

“You really think all nuns are old, stunted and sad? This isn’t the case anymore,” he said, pointing out that many young nuns had arrived to Italy from around the world.

He added that the idea of staging such a contest had been suggested by nuns themselves. "

I’m not sure how to take it. 🤷
What do other people think?

–Sister Mary Beata likes long talks with God, practicing modesty, and committing her days to the Sacred Heart.

–Models walk down a runway. Sisters will walk down a nunway.

–Instead of, “Ms. Congeniality,” they’ll have the, “Et Cum Spiritu Tuo,” award.

I don’t know. I think I’m pretty sure that it would not be inappropriate, but I don’t see the point. That stereotype of the sisters being old and wizened may exist, but I seriously doubt this beauty contest would do anything at all to alleviate such a stereotype. I mean, if that stereotype is so strong that Father feels this need, then who’s gonna look anyhow?

My cousin’s cousin is a nun. She is very beautiful. Man, there are some priests who are literally dying over her. I’m serious. Some of them try to hit on her by constantly bugging her.

What’s I’m trying to say is that behind those nun’s garment, there are some hottie out there. Off course, they are off limit since they are God’s property.

a Christian in other forum said it’s a great idea.

I asked : how it is a great idea ? Bible encourage /allows women to show her beauty or take part in beauty contests ?

Yes , I guess it won’t like other contests where women come in front of millions almost half naked but still …why nun needs to take part in such a contest ? How that will benifit them or others ?

…and Peace be to you and yours, and in your homes, Peace…

I think probably most Catholics will be shocked at the notion of a beauty pageant for nuns. It has nothing at all to do with religious life and living, in fact the very lifestyle of religious and religious living stands counter to worldy values. A beauty pageant is the standard of this world, valuing the values of this world, and religious life and living is about living in the world to a degree but not of the world and certainly not adopting worldly type standards and values. To even infer that a beauty pageant and religious life can be even remotely connected is ridiculous…and also very sad.
Most, I think would consider Father very much misguided and not in touch - in fact quite out of touch … as would any nuns be who enter such a contest…
