His bishop told him to take a “reasonable period of reflection” and then they’ll decide next steps. The bishop said “Let’s take a year and see.” The priest agreed to this, according to the bishop.

Any seminarian knows that the greatest penalties in canon law involve messing with the sacraments. Breaking the seal of confession, absolving an accomplice, seducing a penitent, attempting to ordain a woman, desecrating the Eucharist, and pretending to preside at a same sex “wedding” are inexcusable. Most of these carry a penalty of excommunication which can only be lifted by the Pope. Whether or not this falls into that category because it was only to be a civil union is beyond my knowledge, but it sends a terrible message to the faithful.
