What poor grammar in this article (not to mention the poor journalism)! Doesn’t anyone proofread anymore?

Isn’t it interesting that a mere 26 people can make the headlines? That’s 0,000002% of all Catholics… What an example to illustrate the media’s push for the abandonment of mandatory celibacy.
I agree totally. In my area (upstate NY, Ulster County) there is an Anglican priest who was admitted into the Roman Catholic Church a few years ago because we have a serious lack of priests here. He has a wife and children. The diocese bought him a large house to accommodate his wife and children. Huge numbers of people left the two churches he was appointed to “pastor”. Personally, I think celibacy is an absolute necessity in priests and religious for many reasons, both spiritual and practical. I would not be a parishioner in a Roman Catholic Church where there was a married priest. Now: I was raised in the Latin tradition and didn’t much like the changes made by Vatican II so this is my personal opinion. But I am far from alone.

Just out of curiosity, why did you put “pastor” in quotes, given that this man was duly ordained as a Roman Catholic priest and serves with the specific permission of his bishop?

Have these women no shame? Why did they get involved with priests in the first place? They are hurting a lot of people by their actions.

Priestly celibacy is a great thing. I would not however view a married man who converts and becomes a priest later with a Bishop’s permission a second class citizen.

I feel this matter is best decided by the Pope and bishops, not by the laity.

If Rome thinks the Anglican Vicar can become a Roman Catholic priest and keep his wife and children (Anglicanoreum Coetibus) because he has seen the light so to speak later on in life, why don’t we Catholics applaud the man for taking that brave step, did anyone who walked out of the Church ask themselves, what obstacles did this man have to go through to leave the Anglican Church to become Catholic, to be thrown out of his home which belonged to the Anglican Church, was ignored by most of his Anglican friends, was no longer an Anglican Vicar (Minister) got hate mail, and no job to boot as he now had left his Anglican Ministry behind him and become a layperson, all this in order to become a Catholic , had to at least get an ordinary job for 2 years, before applying to become a Catholic priest, which he did, he fought the good fight and was now a Catholic and a Catholic priest, hurrah, but what do the Christian Catholics do walk out of the Church when this new Father was saying or before saying Mass, We are back into Rome during Nero when the Christians were being persecuted, except this time its us doing the persecution of this poor priest who gave up so much, wept telling the Lord he did not want to be a Catholic But he saw now that the Catholic Church was founded by Christ and had no say in the matter to follow Our Lord in the Catholic Church hell or high water.

I wonder would the people who walked out, what they would have been like in Nero’s Circus when the Lions were told go eat the Christians - cowards everyone of them.
Shameful and despicable

the Pope can’t change this…only God can and he is not going to.

That is incorrect. It is a discipline in the Western Church and not a doctrinal matter.

I would not be surprised to see it changed as a way to counteract the shortage of vocations, but I think it should stay the way it is. I don’t think that is the right answer.

Yeah, Priestly celibacy is the one “hot button” issue that actually can be changed by the Pope (because it’s a discipline, not a doctrine). I certainly hope it doesn’t happen though. I don’t think it will, at least not right now because there doesn’t seem to be a lot of “buzz” about it in the highest levels of the hierarchy.

There is a big difference between the Church ordaining married men, which she has always done and continues to do (Anglicans / the East) and the Church allowing existing priests who have made a commitment to celibacy to take a wife. The former is very possible, the latter is contrary to the common Tradition of West and East. If these women are truly the secret lovers of priests, and these priests truly cannot give these women up, the Church in her mercy can release them from ministry and dispense them from celibacy…

It was merely the use of the term. I did not say he was the Pastor, I said he was appointed TO “pastor”, i.e., lead. Sorry for the confusion.

A group of 26 Italian women who claim to be having affairs with Catholic priests have written a joint letter to Pope Francis begging him to end the Catholic Church’s ban on priests having sex and getting married.
Outrageous! If this is true, I would think the pope would disregard these women and address the more much urgent issue of priests needing to cleanse their souls and get back on the path to holiness.

Absolutely. I don’t see how these women can take pride in the fact that they are assisting in the priests’ breaking their vows, which is sinful, and they may well be committing fornication. How in the world is that something you would write the Pope about?

Let’s be careful not to confuse terminology as the media does. Not all priests are in vows. Consecrated religious, both men and women, take vows - that is the nature of religious life. Out of religious men, some are also ordained to the priesthood…but their vows are related to their religious vocation, not their priestly vocation. Secular priests take no vows at all…but they do PROMISE obedience and celibacy upon their ordination, and are certainly bound to celibacy (with the exception of married men who are ordained to the priesthood) under pain of sin.

You make a distinction between “vow” and “promise”. Assuming that is an ecclesiastically recognised one, Catholic Answers says that priests and bishops “vow” celibacy in their tract “Celibacy and the Priesthood”.
