GraceDK,
Could it be that there may be some psychological issue underneath all this?
Emotions precede a behavior, so it’s likely that a sharp emotion is controlling you. Perhaps you are subconsciously lacking something and trying to fill that void by eating cakes. This may be linked to something in your past, probably childhood (just my guess).
Please do this if you’re interested, but go through it slowly. If I were on the phone, I would guide you through this, but this is the best I can do since it’s a forum:
You said, “I feel the cakes are eating me”. What thought or feeling comes to mind as you think ‘cakes are eating me’? Also, is there some sort of physical sensation in your body somewhere (like a tightness in your chest or heart, or anywhere else)? You’ll probably be surprised to see that an emotion usually has a location in one’s body. Anyway, think about whatever thought or feeling comes to mind, and go with your first thought or guess.
Then think about these questions: Is this particular feeling coming from wanting approval? wanting security? or wanting control? (if it’s more than one, just pick one)
In other words, does the feeling trigger one of those wants that I just mentioned?
If so, then could you give that want to God?
If you said ‘yes’ to it, imagine literally delivering it to Him (you can close your eyes and do this), and notice how you feel afterwards. Be sure to take all the time you need. I also encourage you to read Philippians 4:6-7 upon doing this.
If you said ‘no’, then think about this next question: What more important thing do you gain by not giving that want to God?
Note - this is a hidden and secondary gain. For example, it’s like a smoker who says he wants to quit, but in his heart he really doesn’t want to because it gives him an important feeling that he does not want to part with.
When you have your answer about the more important thing, could you give that to God?
If so, when you totally offer up the feeling to God, notice how you feel about eating cakes. You may notice a subtle or substantial difference. Either way, when you give it to Him, you will feel free. If you are still stuck, then either give the stuckness to God, or dig deeper until you find whatever it is that is causing you to not be able to give it to God. Ultimately, you will notice that you are probably subconsciously hanging onto something that is very important to you but likely harmful for your life.
I think St. Paul’s words are particularly relevant here:
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but
be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2)
So think of this not as “I can’t stop eating cakes and chocolate”. Think of it as God is providing you an opportunity to let go of these hidden psychological issues which are affecting your diet, your weight, and your spiritual life. Dig inside, find it and offer it up to God, regardless of however long it may take. It may be easy or tough, but in the end you’ll be happy you did it
