On my way to the train station the other night, I was handed a Bible tract, authored by a person named Jack Chick. The title of the tract was* “This Was Your Life” *and, in comic book fashion, it chronicled the life of a man who was pleased with his station in life, but died sooner than he anticipated.

The LORD proceeded to show the man a film of every moment of his life and, subsequently, that man was cast into everlasting fire. Then, the booklet showed how he could’ve lived his life and attained Salvation as well. I was curious to know if there is anybody out there who might be familiar with tracts like these and, if so, do you think they’re helpful in leading souls to salvation?

I pose the question here because I hadn’t seen anything mentioned about sacraments or other Catholic Traditions and, as such, wasn’t sure if anybody here would have heard of them. Thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut and may God Bless you all. 🙂

Jack Chick is a famous anti-Catholic author. His tracts have claimed that the Jesuits killed Abraham Lincoln, the catholic Church created the nazi party and communism. Generally speaking, the guy is missing a few marbles to be charitable.

I do believe I know which tract you are talking about.

In this track, some of the lies it has about the Catholic Church are subtle, some not. The one that I remember was when the man says “but the priest forgave my sins” Catholic teaching is not that a priest forgives sins. Only God forgives sin. But John 20:21-23 we believe Jesus gave priests the authority in His name. God still is doing the forgiving, but we take literally “Go and forgive”. Many Protestant groups I was in say that John 20:21 means go and teach forgiveness, but it doesn’t say that. (Anyway another thread all its own. )

But for Catholics, Jack Chick tracts are filled with lies about the Catholic teachings and the Catholic Church. Some are completely out there and others more subtle, but a lie is still a lie.

God Bless,
Maria

Even when I was a Protestant I found Jack Chic to be simplistic and too harsh in his views. Now that I have been exposed to some of his anti Catholic rants, I am shocked at his beliefs.

You can be forgiven for judging him by one tract. Afterall, you have probably never seen the antiCatholic side to his work. Perhaps someone here could post a link to his site. Jack Chic seems to me to be almost paranoid about the Catholic church.

ChristianWAB, we know Jack Chick’s stuff very well. I can’t believe he’s still in business.

His marketing of Alberto Rivera, a “Jesuit” “bishop” is absolutely :rotfl: – except I think Rivera believed his own publicity and Chick probably believes all his own nonsense as well. Nobody could possibly mount such absurdities except in good faith.

Nobody could be that evil. One might believe, however, that the Chick enterprise is completely :whacky: .

Here’s an article on him from *The Christian Century, *a Protestant publication with fairly wide distribution.

If anybody here finds Chick tracts credible, I have a nice bridge down by the Manhattan Battery you might be interested in buying.

I think you’re too hard on Mr. Chick. I voted that he is a very nice man, and if he was Catholic, could easily become St. Jack Chick.

His pamphlets have brought many away from the evil, Romanist Papist Church back to TRUE BIBLE Christianity.

Don’t judge, lest ye be judged. Without him, how would we know The CC invented Islam? This will make bringing our Muslim brothers and sisters back to Christ so much easier once they know! woo hoo for Jack Chick.

I threw up inside my mouth the second I typed “St. Jack Chick.”

I think the question should be, “who hasn’t heard of Jack Chick…” :whacky:

The Church also created Islam to fight the Jews, has a giant computer with the name of every protestant in it, and worships Isis, Horus, and the Death Cookie

You left out pineapples.

I understand that some Protestants also distance themselves from Jack Chick.

The real danger of anti-Catholic cranks like Jack Chick and Tony Alamo is that they are so obviously out there, it makes other anti-Catholics like John McArthur, James McCarthy, and James White seem reasonable and moderate by comparison.

I would like to emulate Paul and say, “What difference does it make, as long as in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is being proclaimed? And in that I rejoice” (Philippians 1:18). However, I suspect that Mr. Chick has transgressed the boundary between zeal for righteousness and outright hate-mongering, and for that he may have some very tough questions to answer, come the Day.

My personal favourite in the “Are Roman Catholics Christians?” tract is the point at which Catholics are accused of being disloyal to their country. This was an argument originally invented in the C16th by Elizabethan ‘Protestant’ nobles, who used it as an excuse to re-invade Ireland and steal the Irish land-holdings of the Anglo-Norman Catholic gentry.

I think his tracts are good for one thing, and one thing only -
they make good paper confetti for mailing things after I put them through the paper shredder. 😃

Actually, I have put his tracks to good use. One year, some were left at our church. Some of the kids in my youth group found them. We went through page by page and found the lies about the Catholic Church. The kids are now more confident that even if they can’t spot a lie that if what someone is telling them says Catholics are not Christians, it is a lie.

But confetti would be more fun:p

I have a large collection of them, along with books by Loraine Boettner, Alexander Hislop, Dave Hunt, James White, and various others, which I keep stored under the sink in my bathroom.

I keep them on hand in case I ever run out of toilet paper. 😉

I made a bad mistake when I threw away my copy of Boettner’s Roman Catholicism. It had been given me by a young Pentecostal minister (friend, mind you). When I queried him as to why he would give me such a ridiculous book, which he knew was full of untruths and fake history, he said: “I wanted you to know what kind of garbage lot of people believe about the Catholic Church!” At the time I was unaware that Boettner’s book is one of the classics of anti-Catholicism. But I can’t bring myself to spend MONEY on getting another copy.

I’d love to own the Hislop book! Isn’t that the one that claims the dove window in St. Peter’s is the Babylonian sun god we worship? :whacky:
