I’m not sure what you’re talking about. The claim isn’t “every non-Catholic goes to Hell”. The claim is “everyone who commits a mortal sin and doesn’t either have perfect contrition or imperfect contrition plus absolution goes to Hell”.All this to say, I simply can’t believe that every non-Catholic in history is in hell, even the ones who sincerely tried to follow God, albeit with a genuine but mistaken understanding of God.
“God you know I’m a rotten sinner - I need this savior that Holy Joe spoke of - oh God, save me for Christ’s sake!”Of course if his contrition had not been perfect contrition then the Sergeant would not have been saved.
Which requirement of perfect contrition did the Sergeant fail to fulfill?
50 years ago there were still places that put rapists to death. I really doubt that people thought it was no big deal if you raped your kids.Unfortunately, those type of tracts are probably representative of the actual thinking in many areas of the USA about 30 to 50 years ago.
If you were friends with the right judge, all kinds of things got swept under the rug. Easy enough to paint the kid as a liar and send her off to some juvenile facility. Happened all the time.50 years ago there were still places that put rapists to death. I really doubt that people thought it was no big deal if you raped your kids.
This has nothing at all to do with what I said.Easy enough to paint the kid as a liar
Not if she’s a first-grader with herpes. The way Jack painted the doctor, he had irrefutable evidence of abuse (you definitely can’t sweep herpes under the rug), but he still sent her home with the abuser…and this doctor is the good guy in Jack Chick’s mind! This is something he would endorse!Easy enough to paint the kid as a liar and send her off to some juvenile facility.
Apologies if I was unclear. I read your post as suggesting that every non-Catholic goes to hell (in practice, even if not in theory, as virtually no one gets through life without committing a serious sin) as a non-Catholic does not have access to confession and is unlikely to generate perfect contrition, given their misunderstanding of its necessity.I’m not sure what you’re talking about. The claim isn’t “every non-Catholic goes to Hell”. The claim is “everyone who commits a mortal sin and doesn’t either have perfect contrition or imperfect contrition plus absolution goes to Hell”.
I’m not talking about the legal system proper, but Jack’s personal idea of how to handle child rape, informed by his religious beliefs.Having worked in the juvenile justice area, I can say with certainty that a lot of really bad legal process went on for a really long time. It was not okay. It nevertheless went on.
Fortunately there are a lot more safeguards in place now than there were then.
I’ll leave it at that.
I think the Sergeant’s words are meant to depict a genuine religious conversion. He’s not sorry because he’s scared of bullets. He’s sorry because he’s realized he’s a rotten sinner and he truly repents of that. His prayer is not “God save my life”. His prayer is “God save my soul.”God you know I’m a rotten sinner - I need this savior that Holy Joe spoke of - oh God, save me for Christ’s sake!”
I don;t see anything here that indicates perfect contrition. More generally, it doesn’t seem likely that a person who repents out of fear of death with no notion that perfect contrition is necessary would elicit such an act.
That’s as clear cut a case of imperfect contrition as can be imagined. His prayer is “God save my soul.”
To my mind that’s perfect contrition.
I do not agree. That’s as clear cut a case of imperfect contrition as can be imagined.
