This same James it seems stated that Jesus was mad and with the others attempted to restrain Him.It seems that he was in great favour with the jews as accepting that salvation was via the law and good works. He was acceptable as Bishop of the jews and Jerusalem. It seems he was regarded as a very just and holy man and would be found on his knees praying for hours on end. Finally it seems some doubt arose as to what he actually accepted and he was taken to the top of the temple to declare loud and clear to one and all what he actually believed. Here it seems he finally accepted and declared that Jesus indeed was the door[way]- He was then hurled from the top of the temple and on falling was finally bludgeoned to death by beatings to his head by a fuller’s staff - twinc

Isn’t this same topic being discussed on another thread? Aren’t we being redundant.

Not that silly comment again.

James - the brother of the Lord? is a question asking if James is the brother of Jesus. Putting a question mark in the thread title in no way conveys the meaning that you are quoting scripture and not asking a question! Grow up!

RESPONSE:

And what is your evidence?
Scripture. Of Course I don’t know if it proves James was a step-brother, but it certainly proves that James was not a uterine brother of Jesus.

Below is from the post of Randy Carson that can be found here

**1. Jesus had a “brother” named James.

**"Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?”(Matthew 13:55)

2. James, the Lord’s “brother”, is an apostle.

“Then, after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother. (Galatians 1:18-19)

3. There are two apostles named James.

“When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.”(Luke 6:13-16)

4. One James (the brother of John) is not the uterine brother of Jesus; his father is Zebedee.

James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder)” (Mark 3:17)

5
**. The other apostle named James is not the uterine brother of Jesus; his father is Alpheus.**

“And when it was day, he called his disciples, and chose from them twelve, whom he called apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter and Andrew his brother, and James and John and Philip and Bartholomew, and Matthew and James the son of Alpheus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, and Judas the son of James and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.” (Luke 6:13-16)

6. Therefore, neither apostle named James was a uterine brother of Jesus.

Thistle - thank you for your kind comments,so I will now explain,so that we can grow up together. It seems you are unable or unwilling to understand that the subject matter was about a person that some wrongly accept as the brother of the Lord since Scripture seems to say so - I have already on this forum stated that Jesus did not have any brothers and sisters and that his next of kin was Joseph of Arimathae - twinc

At Pentacost, there were about 120 “brethren” present.

To those who think Jesus had biological brothers because of the scriptural use of the word “brother”, does this mean Mary was pregnant for 90 consecutive years to give birth to 120 “brethren”???

If Mary is the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, would God become incarnate within the womb of a bigamist who was declared holy by an angel? Is this an argument for bigamy? Can we get any more insane?

Jesus having other biological brothers is a doctrine of demons. I get really tired of trying to explain it to cultists, as not even the early reformers bought into such evil lies.

Sorry, but what does that mean? A correction for what??

Also where in Scripture does it say that Joseph of Aramethea was related to Mary, Mother of Jesus?

Watch out Thistle- this apocryphal tale is one of twinc’s favorite-and really believes it’s true and also believes they went a wandering in England .No scriptural prove not even an inkling of it.Go figure:shrug:

RESPONSE:

Jesus’ brother was James the Just. He is neither the son of Adelphus, not the son of Zebedee.

From “Church History,” by Eusebius, about 325 AD, Book 2, Chapter 2

"Then James, whom the ancients surnamed **the Just **on account of the excellence of his virtue, is recorded to have been the **first to be made bishop of the church **of Jerusalem. This James was called the brother of the Lord because he was known as a son of Joseph, and Joseph was supposed to be the father of Christ, because the Virgin, being betrothed to him, was found with child by the Holy Ghost before they came together, Matthew 1:18 as the account of the holy Gospels shows.

Josephus on the Death of James brother of Jesus, in 62 C.E. Josephus, Antiquities
Book 20: chapter 9

“Festus was now dead, and Albinus was but upon the road; so he assembled the sanhedrin of judges, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some others, [or, some of his companions]; and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the law, he delivered them to be stoned”

When it comes to our faith and morals we accept Sacred Scripture, Apostolic Tradition, and the Magesterium.

We do not accept English myths.

I actually spent some time looking into this. And will probable spend more just to see if I can get the historical document you cite in line in my mind with Scripture.

But, as ironic as some may find this, (but not me, cause I come from fundamentlist “bible alone” kind of churches before the Catholic Church:p) I have to turn to scripture for clarification.

Scripture shows that James, the brother of the Lord was also son of Mary, wife of Cleophas.

This Rock has a quick little answer on it which was one of the many, many articles I looked at trying to find who the James, son of Joseph, brother of the Lord would have been. In scripture, I don’t see James, son of Joseph, though, just brother of Jesus and son of Mary.
From This Rock
The New Testament speaks of two men called James who were close followers of the Lord. One is James the Greater, the son of Zebedee (see Mt 4:21, 10:2, 26:37; Mk 1:19-20, 3:17, 10:35; Lk 5:10; Jn 21:2). This James and his brother, John, were nicknamed Boanerges by Jesus; the nickname means “sons of thunder.”
The second James, known as the Less because of his short stature, was the son of Mary, the wife of Cleophas (a man whose name is also rendered as Clopas and Alphaeus). He is the one mentioned in Matthew 13:55 (see also Mt 10:3, Mk 3:18, Lk 6:5, Acts 1:13). The problem for those who insist that James the Less was Jesus’ literal brother is that both of these Jameses are identified as sons of other men and women, not sons of Mary and Joseph. Some biblical concordances give the impression that there were three different men named James in the New Testament: James, son of Zebedee; James, son of Cleophas; and James, the “brother of the Lord.” This distinction is not accurate because the James who is called the “brother of the Lord” in Matthew 13:55 is identified in Matthew 27:56 as the son of Mary, the wife of Cleophas.
I am going to be looking at this more, but was there a scripture that talked of James the son of Joseph, that may help me in this quest?

God Bless,
Maria

Not directed at me, but I have to say, in my walk to the Catholic Church, (although I didn’t know part of the time that was where I was headed!), it can’t CONTRADICT scripture.

I accepted and continue to accept things like the cannon of scripture being God’s inspired word without that being anywhere listed in scripture except for the table of contents:p

God Bless,
Maria
