Anyone out there read James White, self-announced authority on Catholicism. Have you heard some of his debates. He is a study in inaccuracy. He is of the opinion that, if the Catholic position were true, everyone would think and worship the same-as if that were anathema!

That’s rather contradictory to the idea of having a centralized authority to decide what would be the uniform form of worship that he so loathes, isn’t it?

If what I’ve heard and read be true, then I would take anything and everything that James White says and believes about the Catholic Church, its beliefs and its teaching with a grain of salt the size of not only the Rock of Gibraltar, but its twin Jebel Musa as well.

May God preserve us all in His Holy, Catholic, Apostolic, and (yes, I’ll say it) SUFFERING Church. :gopray: :gopray2: :knight1: :knight2:

i have listened to and read a lot of his work. Can you give 2-3 examples where he is inaccurate?

OK, two old errors :

The “Washington-Ajo” error on St. Jerome: “…[Jerome] asserts that the bishop of Rome is of the same worth as the bishop of any smaller city or province. All the bishops, Jerome claims, are the successors of the apostles. No mention is made of Peter, no mention is made of the unity of the church depending on Rome. Surely Jerome recognized the importance of the Roman See – so did just about everyone else. But they did so for reasons that are other than those claimed by modern Romanism.” (Answers to Catholic Claims [Crowne Publications, 1990], page 121)

Demolished here by John Chapman over 100 years ago.

The “Universal Bishop-Antichrist” error on Pope Gregory the Great: “Gregory likens anyone who would claim to be ‘universal bishop’ to Lucifer himself who attempted to raise his throne above the throne of God Himself (Isaiah 14). Would the modern claims of the papacy qualify for Gregory’s ridicule? This author believes that they would.” (ATCC, page 122)

Answered here by Radio Replies, This Rock, etc on Gregory

And there is: “In fact, there is a good possibility that Peter did not go to Rome at all” (page 103), that “Babylon” might not be Rome (page 104).

To be fair, White hasn’t used these since his Dec 1990 debate with Matatics on the Papacy. Webster still uses the “universal bishop” one (Roman Catholicism [Moody, 1994] and repeated in his more recent books/talks). There are others in that White book (ATCC) that he still uses (Cyprian, Augustine, Chalcedon and Canon 28, etc) which are more differences of historical interpretation rather than blatant errors. I call the St. Jerome quote he used, the Pope Gregory and “universal bishop” quote, and the “Peter may not have been in Rome” blatant errors.

Easy, just listen to his debate with Vin Lewis. Carefully…

Vin Lewis gets a little aggressive and it is difficult to follow but if pay attention you can clearly see James White dodge and lie to avoid admitting a fallacy in his denial of Purgatory.
If you PM me I could get you in touch with a way to download it or get a CD for free.

Yet I would suggest we do not talk about him too much as we should point people in the direction of salvation and people to imitate such as Saints. I would much rather talk about Saint Francis De Sales than… well, I shouldn’t compare anyone alive these days to Saint Francis De Sales, unless you know of a living Saint.

I happen to think Patrick Madrid destroyed James White in their debate on Sola Scriptura more than a decade ago.

Of course, since the Bible doesn’t teach sola scriptura, White was arguing from an impossible position…😛

It’s also my understanding that he didn’t fare very well against Art Sippo or Gerry Matatics, either.

My favorite James White debate is with Sungenis on Sola Fide.

White and Sungenis are neck and neck most of the debate, and then in the closing arguments, Sungenis basically tears apart everything White had said thus far with his impressive knowledge of Greek, thus winning the debate.

I really wish Sungenis would debate more often.

Love your site btw, Phil.

I find this so very interesting that Catholics don’t want to talk about James White (or mention his name) and yet have whole threads on him. As they do over on Envoy maybe we here at Catholic Answers could start calling Mr. White " He Who Must Not Be Named" as though we fear him the way all those in Harry Potter feared Lord Voldomort.

James White?

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::yawn:

What I find even more amazing about James White is that he does not consider himself anti-Catholic. One of his supporters even objected to Alpha-and-Omega Ministries being included in a site warning of anti-Catholicism (btw, the site is entitled Anti-Catholicism of the Net…I think).

🙂 😉 😃
