You miss the point; White is not joking; he is not retracting his blog post; however, he is using humor to illustrate the actions of some Catholics. 🙂
Crowds of faithful followers of Rome had gathered in the parking lot in support of the Charitable Dr. Beckwith, calling for my immediate repentance and adoption of charity
Seems to me he doesn’t say some, but rather refers to all of those who had asked White for some Charity. QED.

No, the point is that equating, however coyly, the beliefs and actions of mass murderers to one’s opponents is not humorous to decent people.

This news is truly tragic. I feel sorry for James White.

As for Godwin’s Law: I would ask that you bear with me as I seek to draw some distinctions.

I do not subscribe to a theory which automatically denounces Mr White’s Beckwith/Hitler associations. If a connection can be made between the activities of an individual and the activities of Hitler – in reference and reason - then that connection can be safely said to exist.

Mr White’s mistake is not that he made the connection but that he cannot justify making the connection.

I have for a long time now felt that the Spirit is moving quickly in the world since Beckwith’s swim. There are more souls at stake than just those who bluster the loudest.

White is a brilliant theologian, with a superb understanding of the biblical languages, an excellent grasp of church history, and a great sense of humor; one with which he can laugh at himself, and at you—get a grip!

And once you’ve gotten a grip, get a sense of humor! 😃
I fail to see the brilliance of his theology. His understanding of biblical languages is “Greek” to me. His grasp of Church history has slipped and his sense of humor is completely missing. While I don’t know the man personally, his writings are filled with hate.
I will pray for him. I can do no less.

Mr. Akin wishes to invoke Godwin’s Law against Mr. White…At this point, Mr. Akin concludes his work as an apologist and defender of the Faith has come to an end in the case of Mr. White and that he is absolved from any further attempt to instruct Mr. White’s ignorance or, presumably, apply any other Spiritual Work of Mercy on Mr. White’s behalf…

There may be many reasons for discontinuing a conversation with Mr. White on this topic, but the argument given here is shallow at best. …Moreover, it would appear that, as a professional apologist, Mr. Akin has voluntarily forfeited the right to avoid discussion with the likes of Mr. White. One cannot claim on one hand to defend the Faith while, at the same time, passively assisting in the ignorance of others by shutting down any further discussion…

Let’s also dispense with the arrogance of claiming to be able to look upon two arguments and infallibly discern, with our fallen imaginations, which one is more “Christ-like.” The validity of an argument does not rise and fall on whether or not it happens to be “nice” and less still on whether it wounds the overwrought emotions of a few…

St. Jerome managed to behold the Beatific Vision after not having been “nice” to much of anyone. Further, since there are more than a few who seem to make a career out of being offended, one cannot go around assuming that the level of offense taken is any kind of accurate gauge concerning the validity of an argument.
Yes. Though it may be difficult to read, it needed to be said. While one may or may not justify cutting the poor man (White) loose, there are souls enthralled in the realm of those like White, souls who need to hear the Gospel lucidly and lovingly.

Being outraged does not let us off the hook for bringing in the souls. The Spirit is moving. We must move with the Spirit.

While we are discourged from board swarming, many of you I know post on other boards. The rules are clear, fair, and compassionate on CAF. I don’t see why those of you who post elsewhere cannot include an invitation and a link to join in the threads here.

Those souls need answers. Here is where they can find them.

People who always use the tactics of bullies, always being on the attack, have an insatiable need to hurt and humiliate others, whether through physical abuse, through slander or through sick humor. They usually focus on individuals or particular groups as avenues to unleash a deep seated rage.

Catholics, both as individuals (especially those who convert) and as a group, seem to be the target for this unfortunate soul, and he’s deceiving himself and others by using the platform of Christian Apologetics to try to mame. His goal is not to bring light, but to bring humiliation and pain. Let’s not forget then, he’s the one in trouble, not us. He needs prayer and deliverance, although I’m sure he and his followers would laugh at the thought. :gopray:

…Perhaps we should not rail Mr. White. Perhaps we should go above and beyond on showing him the love Christ demands…
Can there be no clearer cry for help? I am given to wonder from what roots grow such a persistent and virulent need for negative attention.

This is not about reason. It is about emotion. And it is about broken trust.

When something like this happens I say we must not be distracted by the failing coping mechanisms of the man but we must go deeper to the root of his malady.

This is the Dividing Line! This is Personal!

You miss the point my friend. Any Christian worth their salt doe’s not stoop to such ugly humor to get a point across. Jame’s is an angry man who would not know humor if it hit him square in the eye.
You’ve obviously never read Luther’s Bondage of the Will, and his responses to Erasmus.

Luther is a Christian worth his salt, and quite humorous as well. 🙂

That’s what I said—some. QED. 🙂

I’m a decent guy, and I found it funny, and apropos. 😉

That’s not news; it’s typical of some Catholics to label the writings, and utterances of those who disagree with them as “filled with hate,” and, as maggieodae states, “angry.” :tiphat:

And the literature for a long time said that this kind of behaviour was intractable. But nothing is impossible with God!

Yesterday I dreamed about a group of people with whom I worked a long time ago. And yes I saw the love of Jesus in those people. The persistence, the kindness, the friendship.

And I SAW with my own eyes the transformation in the hearts of folks who who were hurt and whose first practised reflex was to hurt in kind. I saw them resist. I saw them flounder. I saw them dig deep and find the gifts which God had given them freely. And I saw that light of faith grow in their eyes. I saw them accomplish things as individuals and with other people, things they never would have dreamed were possible.

Now folks say that I am just a dreamer for thinking certain things are possible. That the world never changes. And that people never change. Hah! Some dreamer! I was wide awake when I saw that the world does change and the people do change. Wide awake! Thank you God for not allowing me to be blind!

He needs persistence. I remember a story my boss told me. That there was a kid who ran away from the facility. And my boss followed him into town. Three miles into town. Waited outside the cafe. All afternoon. Followed the kid back to the facility. Never said a word. Just waited. Did this over and over again. One day the kid just softened.

Then one of the kids under my charge did the same thing. My boss waited on the edge of the field. And I learned to wait too. I would go to programming and wave to the kid. Some folks would bring food and leave it at the edge of the field. One day the kid softened.

What I learned is that no change in behaviour can happen without friendship. None.

This is obvious a crisis in White’s life. This is where the coping mechanisms come unravelled. It always gets worse before it gets better. Now we wait it out at the edge of the field. Close enough so that he can see us. But far enough so that he can be alone.

This is what is known as ‘timeout’.

He is angry…has been all of his life…Very sad man bound up in his anger. He needs prayer and that is about all one can do for the poor man. He is very spiritually and emotionally ill.
🤷 Happens.

As to helping those deceived by Mr. White, the best way to do that is to pull his teeth by not responding to his attacks against Catholics or even the Church. Why? Because responding only fuels his anti-Catholicism.

People who want to believe the likes of Mr. White are not open-minded types who respond to reasoned arguments. They want to be reinforced in their bigotry. In this regard, Mr. White is no better than Jack Chick. The only real difference between Jack Chick and him is that Mr. White puts on the airs of scholarship to order to make his attacks.

This is why I urge my fellow Catholics not to feed his anti-Catholic machine. As someone who used to be like him (God forgive me!), I assure you I know what I’m talking about.

Now, that’s funny! 😃

Methinks thou doth project too much! 😉

I didnt think the first picture was that bad, yes it can be taken wrong, but I wouldnt say it was terribly uncharitable.
The beheading picture should not have been posted considering he is a pastor, but even then I wouldnt say “completely lost it” considering the content of the blog entry. He showed up at work with a parking lot full of demonstrators, that bugs me because when that type of thing occurs here in Portland (usually against conservative voices) it is a sign that people want to shut someone down by means of pure intimidation.

p.s. Im still Catholic, I still abhor imputed grace, schism and sola scriptura.

Those who have bought into a lie, who are infected by the hate never see it themselves, there’s always a ready excuse. They are on the side of truth and justice, and all is fair in love and war, right? 🤷

But underneath all this is a quiet, nagging discomfort that the spirit behind it isn’t one of Christ. And that’s what’s going to bring down the house of cards eventually.

Until then, of course, there’s the sad attempts at humor to cover it up. 😦

You have a very vivid imagination, Jeanette; however, you must begin to focus a bit more on reality, and a bit less on vanity. 🙂

White is a brilliant theologian, with a …great sense of humor;
I agree with some of the other posters and Jimmy…White wasn’t trying to be “funny.” He was trying to get in another dig at Catholics. He really does think Catholics are uncharitable among other devilish things. Ever listen to him???

Not that I’m terribly offended, because the accusation of “they are like terrorists” is such a diluted claim, that the comparisons don’t have the effect anymore. His post was a “swing and a miss”.

The real crux of what makes White’s post so poor is the complete lack of scholarship and seeming violation of every fallacy of argument, ad hominem attack being the most common. And I guess that’s his last refuge at this point. 🤷

It occurs to me that since White has lashed out this strongly, Beckwith’s conversion must have touched a nerve.
Speculatively, of course, since I can’t know the man’s mind, but I think you hit the nail on the head. White has been obsessing with this for some time now. I thought the same thing myself.
