It seems to me that some Christians excuse any person’s sin, or any acceptance or endorsement of sin with the following words “Jesus ate with sinners!”
For instance, here on CAF, there might be a discussion about various topics, whether they are okay or not, and then someone will throw in the phrase, “Jesus ate with sinners”, like that should immediately shut down all discussion.
As in, “who are we to judge anything at all, because Jesus ate with sinners”.
So, can we just use the shorthand JAWS for that phrase?
E.g.:
The Catholic Church teaches against gay “marriage”.
Or, “should I go to my cousin’s fifth wedding ceremony?”

Rebuttal: JAWS!

I much prefer SAP - Speck and Plank

I’m not one for throwing up people’s sins into their faces or endlessly discussing the sins of others. Some folks here are CAF seem to make it their mission to do that. No thanks.

Okay but wouldn’t SAP also be throwing people’s sins into their faces? Because it implies to whoever you are saying it to, that they have a big old plank in their eye?

No, It means that I don’t worry about the speck in someone else’s eye because I have a plank in my own.

We are perfectly justified to rebuke sin AND sinner.

Let me explain. In Matthew 18:17, it is said
“If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.”

Because yes, people sin. Yes, we need forgiveness daily. And even need forgiveness for mortal sins many times throughout our lives.

HOWEVER, Christ showed love and compassion to the REPENTANT sinner. Not to those that continued living in sin after being told what the right thing to do is.

Jesus ate with sinners. He comes to US. The sinners. All mankind. But, the sinner let him in to hear His words.

If the sinner does not… then they are to be rebuked. Just as God will do to many on the day of Judgement.

If the sinner does not… then they are to be rebuked
And oh the joy among a certain small segment of the Church when the opportunity to rebuke someone arises. Or at least can be plausibly claimed. Me, I’m not Christ and cannot see into anyone’s heart, sometimes not even my own, so I will leave the rebuking alone.

Didn’t he whip people to get them to not shop on the sabbath?

It depends on what “JAWS” is intended to prove. If the person is using it in response to the idea that we have to shun sinners and refuse to engage with anyone who disagrees with us, then “JAWS” is a pretty good rebuttal.

If it’s used to argue that sins aren’t really sins, then yeah, JAWS is a weak argument.

Jesus ate with sinners.
And Jesus told sinners to stop sinning. He came to them to get them to repent.
He saved the woman taken in adultery. He prevented her stoning and let her go. And He told her: “Go and sin no more.”

Jesus ate with sinners to convert them, not to condone them in their sins. People seem to forget that. Also, Jesus wasn’t in danger of being swayed or drawn into their sinfulness. We stupid humans aren’t that immune.

Jesus message was "I love you despite your sin, I forgive your sin; now go and sin no more. Then love as I do. Sin no more by loving as I do, in fact. And I’ll be with you to help you in that endeavor to the extent that you remain in Me. And as we succeed together, you’ll be with Me forever in heaven.

NOT exactly. He made a whip and drove out moneylenders. . .people charging extortionate prices. . .from the inside of His Father’s house.

We are to be like Jesus and He gave us the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy to help achieve that. So, yes, Jesus ate with sinners but he also said go and sin no more and that’s the part that the liberals leave out to the detriment of souls.

I don’t think that adds to the conversation.

You are rebuking someone right now.
