Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush condemned the Obama administration’s use of “coercive federal power” to limit religious freedom as he courted Christian conservatives at a Liberty University commencement Saturday ahead of a likely presidential run.

Charging that “the Christian voice” isn’t heard enough in the world, the Republican White House prospect lashed out at the Democratic president’s administration for “demanding obedience in complete disregard of religious conscience.”

“The present administration is supporting the use of coercive federal power. What should be easy calls in favor of religious freedom have instead become an aggressive stance against it,” Bush told an estimated 34,000 gathered for a graduation ceremony.

“Somebody here is being small-minded and intolerant, and it sure isn’t the nuns, ministers, and laymen and women who ask only to live and practice their faith,” he said. Bush spoke inside a packed football stadium at Liberty University, an institution founded by the late conservative culture warrior, Rev. Jerry Falwell.

I do applaud Mr. Bush here. Well said.

Especially saying a “Christian Voice is needed in this world”.

I’m glad he said that it’s not the religious who are being intolerant - that’s been needed to said for a VERY long time.

That’s exactly right. :o

I can’t wait for this Administration to retire.

This points out the big difference between the American president who is intolerant of Christianity, and the Russian President who has made huge strides to support the Holy Russian Orthodox Church in so many different ways.

The good book says “Thou Shalt Not Steal”, sometimes our acts are important as well.

Opposition politicians being gunned down in the shadows of the Kremlin. Really?

And in the immediate 2 weeks after that, Putin goes missing and we are told he is holed up in some town on the Swiss/Italy border and his girlfriend is having his baby. Really?

This is moral?

Thanks, Jeb.

I agree with his statement. Although, I am curious as to what examples of “coercive federal power” he is referring. Did I miss something?

I will cite an example:
The Little Sisters of the Poor are an order of Roman Catholic nuns who have taken vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. They operate nursing homes for those who cannot afford them and employ more than 50 persons. The sisters have objected to the requirement that they must pay for health insurance coverage that provides for birth control, as those payments directly violate Catholic teachings and beliefs.
Also, I guess all of this about baking cakes for weddings you may not agree with also seems to be “coercive federal power”.

So, things like this.

It seems like everyone here is praising him for that comment but remember he is a politician trying to get the majority republican vote! Of course he would say that! If you look at his policies Bush IS NOT completely prolife, he believes there are some cases where abortion and contraceptives are justified. We must remember there is a truly Catholic , completely prolife republican canidate in the running, Marco Rubio.

At first I found it strange that Jeb would say such a thing considering Obama is a Christian. Baptized in the UCC denomination and when the First Family ventures out to attend public worship, they’ve been known to worship in Christian churches. If I’m not mistaken the President has even received communion in an Episcopal church where communion is open to baptized Christians in the trinitarian form. He just is not a Catholic or conservative Christian. Christians have various beliefs and views and Catholics or other conservative Christians don’t hold a monopoly on only their beliefs being tolerated. But then I realized the audience he was speaking to and wanting their votes if he runs for his party’s nomination.

Obama is a Christian.

And Pelosi is a Catholic.

The have no tolerance for Christianity.

It is about wheat and chafe.

I believe at Easter they attended a Baptist church near the White House. I cannot say that Obama is not a Christian. I just don’t think he gives a lot of thought into making a commitment as to the kind of Christian he wants to be - which denomination he wants to follow.
Maybe if he and Pope Francis spend more time together he will become Catholic. That would really be a conversion story!

The Westboro Baptist Church is also “Christian” in a wide sense. This doesn’t really mean anything.

He would have to renounce Satan in regards to abortion…not just become Catholic. Remember, you can’t be Catholic and support killing unborn children.
