djd83, how did you become Catholic? Welcome home!
Thank you! 🙂

I was baptised and confirmed at Easter Vigil, and it’s been a truly wonderful experience 🙂

Anyway, my journey here started with finding a free King James Version bible in the public library’s box. I was interested in the older language used in it (I’ve always been interested in language). So, I started reading out of that Bible instead of the “home-grown” New World Translation; I was told by the religion that it was an okay translation to use, except for the lack of God’s name.

So, as I was reading through the New Testament, I started noticing some major differences between the readings of the King James Version and the New World Translation. Most of these differences occurred as a result of added/changed words in verses that would have been contrary to JW teaching if they were read as they were in the KJV. These verses had to do mostly with Jesus’ divinity and “always-ness” (and possibly heavenly life for humans, I can’t remember exactly). I did research of these verses in the Indexes published by the JWs that listed where Bible verses were used in their publications for the past 90 years. Often, the verses were used only once or twice in that time period, which is quite unusual.

My next course of action (guided by God, I’m sure), was to look at these verses in the Greek text as I could find in the Kingdom Interlinear Translation. I found that it was almost always the KJV that was more correct, and the JW bible had added words. This, along with some other suspicions I had (false prophecies, former leaders leaving the church) pretty much made me lose my faith there immediately, but I still went with my mom so as not to cause any trouble (I was about 16).

It took me a really long time for me to figure out where to go from there. I believed everything from various Protestant teachings to Atheism, but in the meantime, God had blessed me with an amazing Catholic girlfriend…whom I then sought to convince that her religion was incorrect 😉 . However, (I’m not really sure how it happened), but something got me interested in this religion that I had always undoubtedly believed was false. Maybe it was the way she refuted my claims, maybe it was something I found when I was doing research, but I eventually found my way to the First Epistle of St. Clement to the Corinthians. I was intrigued that such early documents as this existed; I was always told that when St. John the Apostle died in about the year 100, the true Christian church fell into deep apostasy. According to scholars, Clement’s letter was written in the 90s (I believe), even before John died, so I figured what was written in it had to be undefiled and true Christianity. What is more, Clement is (probably) even mentioned in scripture (Philippians 4:3).

What I found was a description of Apostolic succession, and references to verses found in what I then called the Apocrypha that were used as Scripture…all of which was to be found in the Catholic Church. That led me to more research and further belief. So, thanks to God and my girlfriend, I found my way home 🙂

And, if that free KJV is one that has the Deuterocanon in it, you will actually be well-served by it. A Douay-Rheims or RSV-2CE is the suggested route to go, however.

Thank you, djd83, for tellling your story. Isn’t it awesome how God leads us where he wants us to be.

Many of the conversion stories I have read have often started with the eventual convert actually trying to disprove Catholicism and next thing you know they are Catholic! 😃

Nope, didn’t have the deuterocanon. I’ve added it to my collection of translations, though.

I would like a D-R or RSV, but my girlfriend got me a nice leather-bound NAB as a gift for my baptism, so I’ll be using that one a while 🙂

Yeah, it really is 🙂

The awesome thing is, my girlfriend said her faith was strengthened as a result of me questioning, because she had to do research to see why she believed the things she did, so God let us have a win-win 🙂

The Jehovah Witnesses are a cult, as they do not believe in the Divinity of Jesus.

They are well trained to try and sound reasonable to someone who is not aware of their beliefs. Words have been changed in the Bible, and the Watchtower, their magazine, has a lot of anti-Catholic twistings in it.

Another thing they believe that is way out is that they believe that Jesus was Michael the Archangel before he became Jesus.

It is best to not discuss with them, unless you fully understand what they believe and know how to refute it with the help of the Holy Spirit.

For your own information, there are Catholic sites that explain what they believe and how preposterous it is.

They need our prayers, and, unfortunately they have drawn some poorly catechized Catholics into their cult.
Good grief. There are so many errors in your post.

I’m being visited about 4 times now by a well-informed JW who seems to enjoy my Catholic response to her points. Her next visit will be about what the kingdom of God really means to an individual. From her handout: “Many believe that Jesus died for them. Yet, how can one man’s death almost 2,000 yrs ago mean life for others today?” I gather the Holy Spirit has no place in their faith. How do I respond to her? Scripture to quote?
Thanks,
Yolene
Just insist on using your translation of the Bible if you are scared hers is corrupt. 🤷 If she is trying to wickedly deceive you - you will soon see through that. 😉

If she is involved in the world wide preaching work Jesus prophecied at Matthew 24:14 - and is going out of her way to freely help you understand what the truth of the scriptures is - Why are you trying to rake up excuses to avoid learning that?

I’m sorry none of the previous 25 posts offered you the scriptures you asked for. How many scriptures did your JW lady read you - or have you lost count? 😃

1 + 1 = ?

Hi, I want to share a story,
there is a JW that always knocking the doors of our village every Saturday they used to bit some catholic and then one time they go to my house and they start asking me such question as "what is the name of God?"and then, after a few minutes they want to give me a magazine but I strongly replied that "Even if you give me your magazine my faith will not change"since then they’re getting mad at me…try it…it works!

Yes…stand firm. Thanks be to the Lord! And stand firm for the love of Christ our Lord and remember to pray for them. 🙂

Hey, Regardless, tell me, Did you get my message concerning Revelation 6:9-11? And why are you avoiding answering Revelation 6:9-11? Well, tell a dead soul to wear a garment and to wait until their brother or sister are slaughtered in the same way as they were? Hmm… No life after death! Are you sure?

I love 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 where St. Paul expresses his desire to die so that his soul can be in heaven with the Lord. And that is why he says: “So we feel confident always. We know that while living in the body we are exiled from the Lord, living by faith, without seeing, but we dare to think that we would rather be away from the body to go and live with the Lord!” 2 Corinthians 5:6:8

What’s that! :eek:Saint Paul wants to be away from his what! Body! So St. Paul is saying that he wants to be away from his body so that he can be with who? With the Who? The Lord! Why does he want to be seperated from the body if the Jehovah’s witness doctrine says that the soul seperated from the body is not good?

Why does he want to be away from his body? Why? Perhaps he wants to receive his white garment as Revelation 6:9-11 quotes it

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit! Amen

Rake up excuses? Regardless, aren’t you the one that headed for the door on this thread?

One things for sure, Regardless. I appreciate how you assent to the authority of the Catholic Church every time you try and quote scripture verses…

Wow. You followed me! 😃

Since you are so diligent in asking, it is only polite I put together a reply and explain how JW’s understand that. I only log on occasionally and don’t keep up with the posts as well as I should. :o )

But I’m sorry, I’m at work now and won’t be able to reply for about 12 hours.
Do you want me to reply on this public thread - or send you a private meassage? 🙂

Every time I post, the “Stop JW’s!” squad mobilizes and the poor thread gets drowned! 😃 Ha.

Do you want to know the answer? or are you wanting to expose me? Public or private? 🙂

The JW’s will teach you for free! Ha 😃

Straight from the horses mouth and all…
Yeah, I know. but I’ve spoken with so many of you that your people no longer come to my house. They never have good answers to my responses.

They cannot justify the fact that there is no, repeat, no basis at all in the Greek NT for the NWT’s mistranslation of John 1:1 to include the indefinite article a. (“and the word was a god.”)

They cannot explain the clear duality of the Hebrew in the Sh’ma Israel in Deuteronomy 6:4 and its clear connection to the same Hebrew word for “one” (“echad”) in Genesis 2:24 which although it does not prove the Trinity per se, blows their whole anti-trinity argument straight out the proverbial tube.

They cannot explain or defend the easily documented fact their very modern new wind of doctrines of men bears virtually no resemblance at all to the teachings and liturgy of the early church.

(See Catholic First Information Center, Church Fathers Index & CHURCH FATHERS: The Didache & What Was Authentic Early Christian Worship Really Like? )

So…free or not, Jehovah’s Witnesses are not the kind of teachers I would waste much time with and (at least around here in the South) they know when a Catholic is not only unimpressed by their zeal or sincerity, but can actively refute their doctrines and show that they have very very little in common with authentic, apostolic, “full gospel”, New Testament, Christianity. (Namely: The Catholic Church.)

FYI guys, you might want to check out this article from Catholic Answers. Are They Awake on The Watchtower?

Point them out and refute them, Regardless.

As 3rd generation former JW, I can attest that Dorothy is pretty spot on.
Congratulations and God’s blessings to you many times over for your homecoming! 🙂

Oh my, Regardless, trying hard! Trying hard to avoid important questions concerning life after death. Excuses! Excuses! And Excuses!

So, when will you put on that garment from Revelation 6:9-11? How about somebody tells you to “Wait” until your brothers and sisters have been slaughtered in the same way as you have been?

What’s that! No, life after death!
What’s that, Regardless! Trying so hard to avoid answering 2 Corinthians 5:6-8!

Who here knows what I am talking about life after death and how Jehovah’s witnesses do not believe in the life after death? According to them life is like a radio appliance. You just pull the battery out and out goes the soul, but to know where does the soul go, according to Jehovah’s witnesses. The soul is seen only as a duracell bunny according to Jehovah’s witnesses.
