What is it that attracts some Catholics to the Jehovah Witnesses? I can’t stand when they go knocking on doors. I notice that many of them are fallen away Catholics.

Does their faith require them to proselytize by knocking on doors?

Good question. My aunt is a Jw (fallen away Catholic). And she is just so persistent with her religion. She’ll call my dad and talk to him for hours trying to convert him. It ain’t never gonna happen, lol! 😛

I don’t know if their faith, “requires them to knock on doors”, but certainly neighborhood canvasing is a strong and widely used method in their ministry.

Personally I don’t care if they come knocking…I just tell them that I am Catholic and will forever be Catholic.

If they offer me something I take it and drop it in the trash.

Yes, they are required to proselytize in this manner (or approach people at bus stops), unless ill health or age prevents them from doing so. When in ill health they will write letters to local homes (I received one many years ago). Their hours of service to their organization are recorded at their local hall and, I think, sent on to their headquarters in Brooklyn.
 
When I see them coming I usually stand at the door and greet them then tell them, “I’m what you would refer to as a Papist and have no desire to convert.” They usually take off pretty quickly after that.

I used to try to use their tactics on them and turn the conversion around(with absolutely no success of course). It would make them uncomfortable and they would usually leave on that as well. They finally started getting me in the end. When I ran out of stuff to talk about they usually kept going until I got tired.
 
I’m not sure why fallen away Catholics sometimes end up becoming Jehovah’s Witnesses. I don’t think lapsed Catholics are at any greater risk to being converted by these folks though. I think anyone who is lost or uneducated about their faith is vulnerable, be they Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, etc. And groups like the JW prey on people who are confused, lost, or weak in their faith. I believe that’s why they’ve been so successful in largely secular societies like the US. They don’t see it as preying upon people of course, they see it as helping them. I do not doubt their intentions are pure, though I would obviously argue they are misguided. Every person I’ve ever met who converted to that faith was converted at a time in their life when they were vulnerable and could likely have been converted to just about any faith if those proselytizing to them were adament enough. I think the number of people who convert to the JW religion should be a source of shame for not only us Catholics, but all Christians since Jehovah’s Witnesses are not Christian no matter what they may claim and they are taking our weaker brothers and sisters away from Christ. 😊

Not only do they take people away from Christ, but I’ve also known people who have left the JW faith and as a result of their bitterness towards that religion they want nothing to do with anything even remotely Christian. Instead they either become atheists, agnostics, or convert to one of the eastern or pagan religions. It’s really quite sad. One person in particular that I know who left the JW’s will likely never join a church for the rest of her life as a result of her JW upbringing. She’s a good person too and still seeks spiritual fulfillment, but she won’t even consider giving a Christian church a chance. 😦
 
They came to my house last month. I told them I would love to talk to them, but I would need them to show up on a Saturday morning. They said they would, but never did.

I skimmed through the materials they gave me and was surprised by how poor their arguments were. One of the articles in the Watchtower was trying to disprove the Trinity. The argument was basically this:

If the Trinity is three persons in one God, then the Holy Spirit is a person. Scripture says that the Apostles were filled with the Spirit, but a person cannot be filled with another person. Therefore the Holy Spirit is not part of the Trinity.

Even my 10 year old brother would laugh at that. I don’t know what may be attractive to fallen Catholics, but their arguments are not sound at all. I’ve found that of most non-Catholics, actually.
 
Next time ask them for their name, address and phone number. And, then show up with a dozen people who are well prepared to debate them.
 
Had a fellow show up the other day…I invited him in but we didn’t get too far. I’m afriad I might have been too forward with him…:rolleyes:
He asked if I believed in the Bible and of course that got into “translation”. when I mentioned the John 1 error he actually said that he didn’t think that the pranslation problem was that big of a deal…I informed him he was definitely wrong.
Since he knew I was Catholic he asked me aobut bible beliefs because evidently another Catholic had said something about not believing the bible…To which I explained that we DO believe in the Bible and in fact hear it every Sunday at mass. That the lady was probably refering to the idea of Sol Scrptura which we do not believe in.
He then asked me what Sola Scriptura was??? This suprised me a bit…That he had never heard the term…

Anyway - after a few minutes of discussion he had to “go to another appointment” but asked (again) about world evnets, to which I responded that I leave such matters up to God.

We parted with a handshake - - - And I’m sure I won’t be seeing him again…🤷

I also thought it was part of their requirements. Jesus spoke of those of another pen,which he had to gather also,so GOD bless them,it cant be easy.
 
I admit, I hide from them and as a result, they usually leave pamphlets on my doorstep about depression. 🤷
 
I’ve only had them come to my house once or twice. I try to be nice but at the same time explain that I am Catholic. I think if they come back I may just have to invite them to pray a decade of the Rosary with me.😃
I guess that is all we can do is be kind to them though but make our beliefs clear. Maybe it might just spark an interest in the Church.
 
Don’t worry they won’t pray with you. They want you to pray with them. For 8 years I met with a JW and his wife each Friday night as a bet. They said no Catholic could resist their arguments. With time you learn that they write down how much time they have spent.
I would make them so mad. They would attack the Catholic Church and then when they asked if I believed the Bible I would reply that I had to as it was a teaching of the Catholic Church.
But seriously you will never pin them down. Their headquarters in Brooklyn have an answer to everything.
I could tell when they were caught off guard. You know they are against war,So I asked them about St. Paul’s military analogy in Galatians. They asked for time to reply to that.
I would not say “amen” to their prayer. I said they were praying for things I don’t believe. They said I was the first ever to object.
After 8 years I was causing the man to shake and they stopped “my instruction”.

I was at my mom’s visiting with my daughter 3 weeks ago when the white sedan pulled up. I was fixing her faucet at the time and joyfully called out “the JW’s are here!” then I went out to greet them. I told them that I would love to talk as I explained to them what I was doing. Instead I invited them over to my house and gave them my cell number in hopes they would come over just so I could show hospitality to them. They came over last thursday and stayed for 3 1/2 hours. My goal was singular; to simply show them Christ by my charity and good will towards them. I tried to keep the conversation off of doctrines and Catholic teaching and was quite successful at that I think. I tried to keep the conversation on scripture and how they know it is inspired and how they know which books belong in it. I tried to remain humble in this and asked in such a way as to keep my pride out of, and genuine interest in, the conversation. My hope was that they would want to come back and bring more JW’s with them. We set up a time this thursday to meet again, we will have to wait to see if they bring more. I told them the more the merrier.
JW’s are so used to having people brush them off or slam the door in their face. I think we Catholics need to start Evangelizing with our charity and hospitality while we talk to them; trusting in Jesus and our Lady to protect our faith and help it to grow to maturity so we can be a real help to those who have been swayed away from the faith we now possess.

I haven’t had JW’s turn up but had two men turn up from something else.

Their first question was “do you believe in God?”

I answered, “yes, I am a catholic”.

My assumption is that they would not have to bring me to God as I was already there but they just continued in trying to get me to believe in God even though I already do.

It was very strange.

I have evangelised before, spreading the Catholic faith in my old church when I was younger, they sent leaflets through the doors of houses in the worst areas and I thought I would receive a lot of abuse but did it anyway.

All you would hear is “not interested mate”, no aggression or nothing.

I enjoyed it and who knows, somebody may have kept their leaflet and used it when times got bad.

There is one man at my work who is a JW, when I asked him why he said he was a drunk and they showed him the way, well belief in Jesus is better than no belief but when I said if he ever thought about being Catholic, he laughed and said no.
 
I had a lady show up at my door several days ago. I thought she was a Mormon or Jehovah’s Witness, nevertheless I answered the door and she gave me her literature. I have in my hallway “Mormom Stumpers” and “Jehovah Witness” stumpers available for me, but I suspect this lady was just getting her required hours in and did not go any further. Yet she passed out something that I suspected looked suspicious as it was a flyer to celebrate Jesus on Palms Sunday, not Easter. I thought Easter was 4/24 this year, but wasn’t exactly certain in my mind. When I looked up when Easter is celebrated in the JW belief, they are not allowed to celebrate Easter and Christmas as they are pagan holidays.

While I hopefully graciously accepted her nonsense, I just wish I were more prepared for the pieces I had laid out for those occasions.

  3. Is “Jehovah” God’s name?
  4. Do humans possess and immortal sout?
  5. Is hell real?
Next time,……I must be on their walking route!
