Jehovah's witness Lords evening meal

Hi. My mother inlaw is a Jehovah’s witness and a good friend is also a Jehovah’s witness. They had been asking me to come to a meeting for ages and I finally relented and went. My mother inlaw wanted someone to go with anyway I went and it was the strangest thing ever, they dont partake of the bread or wine, and they threw some subtle insults towards the Catholic church, and sung songs, and they kept calling god Jehovah. I managed to say the rosary in my head though.

Have I committed a mortal sin. I had discussed it with my parish priest he said as long as i didnt take part it would be "ok"ish.
What are you thoughts as I have adoration of the cross tomorrow and don’t want to take communion if i need confession first.
 
Doesn’t sound like a mortal sin because you didn’t do anything except go with them… Just avoid putting yourself in more situations like that and you’re fine. I’ll be praying for you. 🙂
 
The JWs are relentless, so be prepared for continuing contacts from them. Their methods are insidious. Once you are inside their building, they usually begin to zero in on you. They prey upon the spiritually vulnerable, so a strong training in your faith is the antidote to their spiritual poison. They especially target Catholics for apostasy. You went with a good heart, and had Mary’s protection while you were there. It was an illuminating experience that you may use to set yourself more strongly in your Catholic faith.

Do you have a copy of the Essential Catholic Survival Guide? Excellent articles in it debunking the JWs and various other false “Made in USA” faiths.

Thank you, yes funnily enough I literally got it off Amazon.co.uk. Its an excellent book, I’ve tried harder apologetics books but they’re very intense.
 
It was charitable and kind for you to go. And I agree with the other posters, don’t go again!!! Anyway, I don’t consider this a sin and it may give you an opportunity to evangelize. But, probably not…

One time, over twenty years ago, when I had a toddler and newborn at home and felt in the need of adult company, I made the mistake of inviting the two nice ladies in for tea. (I thought I clearly explained I wasn’t interested in changing my Catholic beliefs but was interested in their point of view.) Man, it took a long time to get them to stop coming over.

They are like rust, which never sleeps. They are very psychological in what they do. Always pleasant, always smiling, always persistent, always handing you propaganda, yet being conditioned to refuse any information from outsiders. One unofficial JW document that I found on the web indicates that they will use persistence to “wear you down” like a car salesman does. Quite similar, actually, since they want into your home (which gives them a psychological advantage), or even more so to get you into their place (which gives them a great advantage). It is a very subtle form of coercion, but we see that the serpent was the most subtle of creatures in the garden. I absolutely respect their human dignity, but I detest the demon who has duped them.
 
Reminds me of the day last fall when I was out raking leaves and the two neatly dressed smiling young men with books in their hands stopped and asked if they could help. I said no but that I would be happy to discuss religion if they liked. An hour and a half later they were still squirming on my living room sofa eyeing the door while I kept asking “just one more question” about their beliefs and practices.

:yup: I know, I know, shame on me…but I still chuckle when I think about it.

I don’t want to be harassed by them although I have heard if you show enough bible knowledge they will leave you alone as you can refute they’re un-biblical beliefs and they go for people not instructed in their faith.
I welcome the opportunity to show them their errors. When I was there last night, I felt more than anything pity and compassion and how they are being led astray, told they can not eat or drink the bread and wine as that is for the anointed class and are missing out on the fullness of our faith.
They point out that their converts are mainly ex-Catholics and from that the only conclusion I can draw is they must be very poorly instructed ones to accept the new world translation which is regarded as worst translation around. Credit has to be given though to their knowledge. I heard once that the average witness can run circles round the average Joe. Some of my family call themselves Catholic and their knowledge would leave you breathless.
 
I would never go again and avoid religious contact with them at all, but don’t feel too bad: you didn’t go for that reason but to be nice and you had Our Lady’s protection!

Now if you really find that you have the interest and stamina to deal with them … you should work for Catholic Answers because not many Catholics can do that, lol.

You’re fine. If you went again though, you’d probably be committing a mortal sin, especially if you prayed with them. Do not forget, they are heretics of a very steep kind. The god they pray to is not God, and the jesus they believe in is not Jesus Christ.
