Recent news event:
The Federal Aviation Administration today signed a contract with the Jehovah’s Witnesses. The Witnesses, a denomination of approximately 4 million people believe that only 144,000 will go to heaven and that number has already been reached. The contract is a 30 million dollar three year study on the problem of overbooked airline flights. 😉

In reply to the original post, the Catholic Church has published a “catechism” which explains various aspects of Catholic belief, and I recommend it to you.

Particularly, regarding the Trinity, we believe in what revelation teaches us. There’s not too much in the New Testament of the Bible that is systematic, like the catechism is.

Jesus told his disciples to baptize all nations “in the NAME [singular] of the Father, and of the Son, and oft the Holy Spirit.” That much has been directly revealed about the unity of God on the one hand, and the manifestations of God in the three holy Persons.

Jesus told us and proved that he was divine. He forgave sins. He preached on his own authority, which astounded the Jewish leaders.

This evening on EWTN radio Catholic Answers program, the hosts mentioned how the questions they get have become more difficult over the years. On another program, apologist Dr David Anders said that if we don’t develop ourselves, our understanding of the faith, we indeed will look like fools. As scripture says (one of the letters of Peter) we should have reasons for our belief. Catholics of all ages need to work on this self development, just for our own sake.

In Deuteronomy, Moses says that any king of Israel should write out a personal copy of the book of the law, to know and live by. Well, that’s one way. He also said the priests should read the law to all the people every seven years. We should follow those examples by studying scripture and our Church Tradition (which interprets scripture). The Catholic Church is the BEST place to study scripture.

I read his a mal further down the thread. I have his curly coated brother. Very formidable if they get going. Also a guard dog.

Offer up a Rosary decade for him. Then tell him you prayed to Mary for his conversion. That should get him real scared 😁

You won’t find too much that is edifying on YouTube
Gosh, I do! I just watched several hours of videos on how to build your own backyard waterfall! I learned a lot.

I have learned how to do a lot of home, computer, and car repairs too.

There is a lot of good Catholic stuff on YouTube. But I do agree, you have to guard your eyes.

I’ve seen one person who could.

My Baptist grandmother.
Almost three decades ago, during law school, they showed up on my porch.

A very small porch in a triplex.

It was probably uncharitable of me to stand there in my robe, leaving them on the other side of the screen on the tiny porch, but it was also morning on a student schedule while I was putting in 12-14 hour days all week, so maybe I just wasn’t awake enough to consider things . . .

Anyway, thy started by trying to trap me with a question making the Bible hyper-literal. “No, I replied.”

“So you think it’s only great literature?” Again I told them no.

Now they were confused; they didn’t seem to have considered a third option.

While they were off their plan, I asked which account of creation I was supposed to take literally.

“There aren’t two accounts.”

“Really? Seven days and Adam and Eve?”

“Oh, do you mean Geneisis 1 and 2?”

“Perhaps. I mean the two accounts.”

“Oh, that’s the older oral tradition, and then Moses.”

“Things happen in a different order”

“No they don’t.”

"Then perhaps you should go read it.’

I probably closed the door at about that point.

Years later, when I recounted this to a former Lutheran minister, he tried to tell me that the order was the same.

sigh

Also, “Jehova” is an older English mistranslation of what we translate today as “Yahweh” . . . but boy are they hung on the spelling and its importance.
we simply state we have PLENTY of religion in this house, thank you very much, point at the Mary statue on the porch and the mezuzah in the door, and invite them in for a glass of wine.
Next time, the Mormons show up at my door wanting to talk about Jesus, I’m taking my cue from that meme and asking what they want to know . . .

And flashing back, I recall one of my college roommates (5 of us in a house) putting real effort into scheduling the JWs and the Mormons to come to see him at the same time . . . and another roommate who deliberately walked through the room in his underwear with a beer when they were there . . . (the beer was unopened; it was morning, but he figured they’d need notice that about his prop) . . . I decided it was a good morning to be somewhere else, anywhere else . . .
Something I found so tragically sad about this organization is that they can never hope to see heaven since the cut off date was 1935.
They’e recalculated, to the start of one of the world wars. The last version I hears was that that meant that until the last person born that year died.
Well yes. If you’ve been forced to listen to them, then you’ve lost control of the situation.
I made the tongue in cheek suggestion to put a “missionaries and solicitors will be doused” sign on the door, and rig a hose to a button by the door.

My wife doesn’t think that’s nice . . .

I was raised not to open the door to strangers and not to open the door to anyone (unless it was Maintenance from the apartment complex we lived in then) when my mother wasn’t home.

This was one my early experiences with JWs. (The first few times, they just didn’t want to take “No” for an answer.)

I’d just come home from school and within 5 minutes, they were knocking at the door. Each door of the apartments had a peep hole to look out of. So that’s what I did. I saw it was JWs, women this time. They obviously didn’t know I was right behind the door listening to them plotting their strategy for getting inside or that their voices were that loud. The “leader” said to one, “You stand here. You stand here and jump through the door the moment it opens. And when she opens the door, I’ll stick my foot in so she can’t shut it. And once we’re inside, she’ll be forced to listen to us.”

What got me was that they knew that there was a “she” at home. How did they know that? Do they take notes of gender based on who answers the door? Were they lurking and saw me entering the house? I didn’t know. But I did know they weren’t getting in the door!

They were there a long time. They were that determined I was going to open the door. But I didn’t. When Mama came home, I had her yell through the door to prove it was her. She was pretty mad until I told her the reason. Then she was mad at them!😁

And I did evangelize the JWs who ambushed me when I came home from shopping some years after that(the incident previously spoken about. 2 and a half hours. I didn’t have a Bible on me and prayed very quickly to God to give me every Scripture I needed to deal with them. He did.

Those JWs were men. And I don’t remember all the verses they tried to show me. But I remember after one about death on the Cross, I countered with “But He arose 3 days later in fulfillment of the Scriptures” and gave verses. And they were like, “Oh, but he died.” And I said, “But He ROSE from the dead.” “But he died!” “And He ROSE conquering death.” “But the important thing is he died! He died! He diiiiiied!!!” (I’ve never seen anyone so focused on death. They weren’t interested in His glorious Resurrection. They were simply giddy that He had died!

I won’t tell you what I was thinking in that moment. But I was really wishing one of my neighbors would come home because I was getting tired of them being there and my mother’s ice cream was melting. She’d had surgery a couple of weeks earlier and that was all she could eat! So I wasn’t happy with them. They REFUSED to leave! They wanted to help me inside with the groceries. I wasn’t about to let them in!😡

They finally left after seeing they weren’t going to sway me. I don’t remember whether they gave me their literature or not. If they did, it went in the trash. But I vowed in that moment, that I was going to get a cell phone and keep it on me for emergencies. (That’s when they were all contract. No “pay as you go” carriers.)

Well, it’s not nice of them to refuse to leave when you’ve asked them to. Being doused by a hose would be the least of their worries. (You can call the police and report the JWs for trespassing since once they refuse to leave, they are.)

OK. Shut this thread down right now. I just got two JWs at the front door, while reading this. It’s apparently attracting them.

Per my usual policy, I drowned them in words and swept them off the porch in 6-8 minutes.

The beauty of living on a military base is they can’t get on it. 🙂 And even if they could, you can’t solicit.

What’s funny is this guy keeps accusing me of following a “man-made religion.”. I’m like ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? Please tell me more about Charles Taze Russell. He just will not answer any questions. He is hyperfocused on the Trinity and keeps referring to the book The Triune God, The New Catholic Encyclopedia, The Catholic Dictionary and how they’ve stated the Trinity was not really mentioned in the Bible. He has called me ignorant and a liar repeatedly. If you want to get in on this, you can go to YouTube and search for “Why be Christian and Not Catholic Response Video.” The second comment on the video was made by someone named “Rookie Student.” That is where my and his comments are further down on that comment thread. His name is cbooth151. Not saying you have to, just saying I’d love some help here!! Lol.

Please tell me more about Charles Taze Russell.
Russell was a Pittsburgher, and he’s buried right on Cemetery Lane. You can see his gravesite which has a pyramid from the road.

you can ask you JW friend what their connection is with pyramids, and what the religious significance is to them? The pyramid is Russell’s resting space.

If you want to get in on this, you can go to YouTube and search for “Why be Christian and Not Catholic Response Video.”
Are you sure you have the right title? I see “Why Be Catholic and Not Just Christian Response Video” but no “Why Be Christian and Not Catholic Response Video.”

You’re very welcome, MeInMississippi. I’m just glad I found it. There are sure a lot of anti-Catholic videos on there. So sad that many still believe Catholics aren’t Christians.😔

It’s like really distressing to see all of these horrible things. I, for many years, have been passive about my religion. Just sitting in the pew without fully realizing why everything is done the way it is. Being married to a Baptist, with a very Baptist family, I had been angered over the years at their thoughts on Catholics and statements that were made as if they were making fun of me for being Catholic. I never knew how to answer them. Then, during one of my hours of Adoration about a year ago, I found in the chapel Apologetic materials. I was thrilled…finally!! I have so much learning to do still. I just joined this site and I’m blown away at how smart people are. I realize I have a lot of work to do. I just wish the Holy Spirit would fill the hearts of all Catholics and help them realize knowing and being able to explain the faith brings them closer to God.

I like talking to JW and always learn a little bit from them not that I agree with much of what they preach especially about celebrating Easter and Christmas. They do read their Bible very frequently and are familiar with it, unlike some Catholics I know. Their Bible does differ in some places with translations that are slightly different from a Catholic version. Also, they have interpretations of some passages that differ from the Catholic interpretation of that same passage. One teaching that I like is their refusal to go to war. I think that the USA is a very warlike country with enormous amounts of money dedicated to the war machine. Something like 700 billion dollars. The US has been at war in Afghanistan against the Taliban for 16 years, even though President Reagan has said that the Taliban were fighting for the freedom of their country. If they are freedom fighters, as President Ronald Reagan has said, why is the US now fighting against them? In the past 236 years, the Americans have been in some type of war for 214 years. I don’t know why the Americans like war so much, but I am happy to hear that the JW are against war and refuse to fight in these useless wars which result in so many hardships, injuries, and deaths for so many children.
