I was watching a response video on YouTube that someone had made to Fr Mike Schmitz. I noticed that a Catholic posted that he never saw a problem with there being different religions. I suggested that he get a book or books regarding Apologetics, not necessarily because I thought he should challenge other religions, but because I think it helps us realize on an even deeper level why we believe what we do, as well as help defend the faith. From there a Jehovah’s Witness started questioning me on why the Church contradicts themselves and lies to it’s members about the Trinity. He started citing all these views from the New Catholic Encyclopedia, The Catholic Dictionary, The Athanasian Creed, Fr Edmund Fortman’s “The Triune God,” (which I knew nothing about), etc. I know that this guy is getting all this stuff from the Jehovah’s Witness booklet “Should You Believe in the Trinity.”

This guy has come at me with question after question, and saying it’s sad how I don’t know anything about what my church teaches and that I’m not familiar with what the New Catholic Encyclopedia, The Catholic Dictionary and what Fr Fortman say about the Trinity. I’ve never had an issue with the Trinity, so why would I know all these writings? I’ve always understood it as much as humanly possible as taught by the church. I have never really studied the JW Organization…I only knew I didn’t answer the door for them, and that their organization is well, different. My question though, since these people don’t believe Jesus was Divine, why do they call themselves Christian? Wouldn’t that make them guilty of worshipping just a mere man by that logic?

I keep asking this guy questions about his religion and he just flat out ignores my questions, but picks apart everything I say supporting the Trinity. If I say something from the New Catholic Encyclopedia IN CONTEXT, he gets a quote from The Old Catholic Encyclopedia and then goes back to The New Encyclopedia OUT OF CONTEXT. Then he picks apart the Athanasian Creed, which I really don’t know and I’ve explained to him we don’t use. I know it’s terrible, but I’d love to wring this guy’s neck. And I know this sounds terrible too, but I’m not going to just ignore him, because I believe he’s wrong. That’s what I think JW’s want us to do is give in. I just can’t do it. To attack the Trinity is too much in my opinion.

Yes, you’re right, I guess what I meant was that we don’t recite it regularly. Forgive me for misspeaking. It’s been a long Monday!

Move on. This guy clearly is not interested in a discussion.

I think I would tell him that if he’s going to refuse to answer questions, plus insult me, there’s no point in continuing. Discussion is a two-way street

Plus, there’s no sense in having a discussion if he does not bother to cite authoritative Catholic sources. Like, for example, the ECFs, Catechism, Church documents, etc. How would he like it if I argued the issues of the JWs with him with Wikipedia citations?

What do you think of him citing The Athanasian Creed, The New Catholic Encyclopedia and The Catholic Dictionary? I think the Creed should be taken really seriously, but how much should I concern myself on the encyclopedia and dictionary? Also, he quotes Bible verses from the Jerusalem Bible.

The Creed is fine if cited in proper context of what’s being said. I’m not familiar with the other two books so I won’t comment, but again, if he can cite Watchtower pamplets, it should not be unreasonable that he cite sources that actually hold authority and weight in the Church. Our beliefs are not defined by those two books. I’m not familiar nor have I heard until now of the Jerusalem Bible. I haven’t heard anything weird about the NJB, but not the JB. He’d have better luck with the NABRE or better yet an RSV. Heck, even an NIV at the bare minimum.

Ok, I’m honestly not usually this off. It’s the NJB, not the Jerusalem Bible.

You cant bible whip a JW. They have very many verses from OT/NT
to uphold their teachings. At every fork in the road, they go opposite
way from Catholic/ Protestant Christology. Lots of trauma for them
if they start doubting JWism

I’ve seen one person who could.

My Baptist grandmother.

And that’s not a contrary statement. I witnessed it. It was both poetry in motion and terrifying beyond description. Seriously. This woman answered them verse for verse, chapter for chapter.

They came by twice. They never came by again.

My grandma…she was but little, but man could she be fierce.

The New Catholic Encyclopedia and The Catholic Dictionary? I think the Creed should be taken really seriously, but how much should I concern myself on the encyclopedia and dictionary?
These references are not official teachings of the Church. The catechism is the sure norm for teaching the faith. But I would encourage you to drop out of the discussion. You Tube comments are not an appropriate venue. Invite him to come here, if he dare!

Our Jehovah’s Witness friends are well briefed in the arguments they will face when they go door to door.

They are used to this kind of thing, some of them have been going door to door for 40 years with their talks and have heard it all.

you aren’t going to shake them, when they head on out, and are “in the zone” when they are knocking on doors.

Sure, JW’s can change their minds, but not when they are in their element, “in the zone” and dictating the terms of debate.

Just think of it as cudzu in the Vinyard of life. I let a wasp nest alone next to my seldom used front door to keep them away.

Anyone ever notice how Catholicism is never defended on Buddhist, Muslim, atheist, Orthodox, Jevovah’s Witness, Jewish, Protestant or Hindu websites?

I remember when these guys used to come door-to-door. Deadbolt and good solid oak would keep them at bay. They have apparently progressed…

I have my own defense. 😂😂(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

I saw a few potential JWs almost have a heart attack when he - with no signal from me - made it clear that they were not to darken our door again. 😂😂😂

He’s a sweet boy - unless he decides he just doesn’t like you.

To the OP - let it go. No good comes out of a YouTube debate on anything.

I’ve read some Watchtower pamphlets my dad got from the ones who stop by. They’re crazy.

My neighbor lady had a flag pole with the U.S. flag on her front porch. When the JW’s came by, she would smile politely and say, “You see my flag there? I’ll listen to whatever you say, as long as you like, but not until we’re both done reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.”
