Recently, I was challenged by a Jehovah’s Witness on the condition of Jesus during the three days of His death. Since the JW’s do not believe that Hell exists, it was something that he wanted anxiously to confront me with. His position was that Jesus could not have gone to Hell because Hell is for the condemned, and Jesus was not condemned.
I explained to him that Hell has sections, as explained by Jesus with the parable of Lazerus and the rich man. Lazerus was held in the “Bossom of Abraham”, while the rich man suffered across a chasm in the eternal fires. (Luke 16:19-31). I also told him that Jesus went there to preach to those in prison.
We find these teachings in the first letter of Peter, chapter 3:18-19 and chapter 4:6.
We ended our conversation without any real resolution.
To any present or former Jehovah’s Witnesses on the forum, what is the understanding that the Jehovah’s Witnesses teach about these verses? If, according to Jehovah’s Witness theology, there is no Hell, then where were these dead people that the bible mentions?
