Recently, I was challenged by a Jehovah’s Witness on the condition of Jesus during the three days of His death. Since the JW’s do not believe that Hell exists, it was something that he wanted anxiously to confront me with. His position was that Jesus could not have gone to Hell because Hell is for the condemned, and Jesus was not condemned.

I explained to him that Hell has sections, as explained by Jesus with the parable of Lazerus and the rich man. Lazerus was held in the “Bossom of Abraham”, while the rich man suffered across a chasm in the eternal fires. (Luke 16:19-31). I also told him that Jesus went there to preach to those in prison.

We find these teachings in the first letter of Peter, chapter 3:18-19 and chapter 4:6.

We ended our conversation without any real resolution.

To any present or former Jehovah’s Witnesses on the forum, what is the understanding that the Jehovah’s Witnesses teach about these verses? If, according to Jehovah’s Witness theology, there is no Hell, then where were these dead people that the bible mentions?

Believe it or not, JW’s don’t believe that Jesus preached to anyone during the three days of his death (they believe he has no immortal soul, you see, and was just a man).

THEY taught me that those verses refer back in time to Jesus’ prehuman spirit existence as the archangel Michael, whom they believe him to be.

THEY believe that Jesus preached to the spirits in “prison” during the time of Noah’s flood when he spoke to the demons and informed them of their everlasting condemnation. That’s what they think those Petrine verses mean.

Of course, that is complete nonsense.

The alteration done to 1 Peter 3:18-19 in the New World Translation is as follows:

“18 Why, even Christ died once for all time concerning sins, a righteous [person] for unrighteous ones, that he might lead YOU to God, he being put to death in the flesh, but being made alive in the spirit. 19 In this [state] also he went his way and preached to the spirits in prison.”

They reject the physical resurrection, and alter the scriptures to reflect this doctrine.

This is correct. I visited the JW’s website, Watchtower.org, where they publish thier version of scripture and you quote directly.

I understand John’s perspective. He is the JW who approached me. Even though the scripture is altered, it still says the He preached to the spirits in prison. However, they do not believe that the spirit is part of a dualistic personality. They believe that the spirit is God’s life force. So, accordingly, there can be no spirits in prison, other than the ones God has created.

King James, Watchtower, Mormon Church, Luther, Protestant publishers, etc. I guess everyone has a right to rewrite and edit the Bible to read anyway they want? So much for what the writer meant or wrote.

Have "ME"ology, will write Bible to agree and support me.

How sad.😦

This must be why Jesus founded a Church and told everyone to be loyal to it and not a book the is so often changed to fit every whim and fancy.

I actually copied it from my copy of the NWT. There are several places where it contradicts watchtower doctrine. Next time you look up the NWT scriptures, look at the following verses:

Matthew 1:23 (Emmanuel: God with us, not Michael with us)

John 20:24 (Nails in his hands rather than a nail through both hands, proving crucifixion on a cross)

John 20:27 (Jesus appeared physically resurrected in the flesh, and not as a spirit being)

John 20:28 (My Lord, My God - explained by JWs to have been uttered out of surprise, meaning that JWs think Thomas blasphemed when he saw the risen Christ)

I’m sure there are other examples of the NWT contradicting JW doctrine.

How about the most famous one? John 1:1
"In the beginning the Word was with God and the Word was a god."
Really funny stuff…

Good point Malachi4U!

The JWs maintain that the word used for the PRISON the spirits are in is not Sheol, Hades, or Gehenna, but TARTARUS, a place in mythology where the bad gods are confined too. They believe that these bad gods are the demons.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses like to make up their theology as they go along. They explain it by saying ‘the light is getting brighter’.

Nor will there be any when trying to have a discussion with jws.
Having once (25 years ago) “studied” with them, I know that it’s like talking to a brick wall. They desperately want to convince you of their “theology” but refuse to listen to anything that does not fall into the watchtower line of thinking.
About all you can hope for is that you gave him some food for thought that he will investigate on his own (in secret) and a crack of true light will break through.

Hi catsrus -

This is not likely since John is wholey commited to his religion. He is in ministry school and plans to become an elder, as is his father. (Call no man father!)

Hi Subrosa, I like to bring up Eph 4

7But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8This is why it[a] says:
“When he ascended on high,
he led captives in his train
and gave gifts to men.”** 9(What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions[c]? 10He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

and,

Rev 6
9When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?”

when discussing that Peter passage.**

It might help to start on topics such as Jesus not being the Archangel Michael, or the existence of both body and soul as seperate things. The minor issues tend to trip them up more, since they rehearse mostly for the major topics.

You should ask the Jw if they believe that the Bible speaks of just Heaven and hell? If they say yes. They are wrong. It speaks of a third place." This place is also called “Limbo of the Fathers” where those who died before the Redemption were waiting for heaven to open to them." Notes taken from CA tract. (Purgatory)

Up close and personal Jehovah’s Witnesses can be wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Think about this-When the devil comes knocking on your door he may not have the ‘dark goth look’.They could be smartly dressed and wielding the Christian Bible.

I have Jehovah’s Witnesses family in the usa who practice the Watchtower JW enforced ritual shunning that i have not seen or heard from in 15 years.

The central CORE dogma of the Watchtower is Jesus second coming (invisibly) in 1914 and is a lie.Jehovah’s Witnesses are a spin-off of the man made Millerite movement of 1840.

A destructive cult of false teachings, that frequently result in spiritual and psychological abuse, as well as needless deaths (bogus blood transfusion ban).

Yes,you can ‘check out anytime you want but you can never leave’,because they can and will hold your family hostage.

The world has the Internet now,and there are tens of thousands of pages up from disgruntled ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses like myself who have been abused by the Watchtower cult.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are often a mouth that prays a hand that kills. The Watchtower is a truly Orwellian world.
