I’ll be praying for you…I think you’re going about this decision for the right reason and doing it the right way. My grandpa is a Jehovah’s Witness. Do you come from a family that follows either of the two religions you’re caught between? (Sorry this offers no help to you…just wondering :P)
Haha no. Actually my grandparents are Catholic but not religious at all. They never go to church and don’t know much about the religion. They don’t glorify the Catholic Church ether so they don’t rely count. No one in my family is Jehovah’s Witnesses that i know of. A friend on the bus was a Jehovah’s Witnesses and I started a study. I am just seeking Truth and the Catholic Church and Jehovah’s is what i really narrowed it down to. I am not so fond of the Watch Tower and Tract Society now but i am not going to totally put it off. I have a new study who is about 30 something. I asked him about Jehovah being a hybrid of Yahweh and Adoni (sp?). He said he never heard of it and that he would not do any research on it for me and that i should not do any more research on it so I am not going to question any thing any more with him because i feel i will just be put down for asking. I will do my own research. lol sorry just a little frustrated. Had to vent :).

What about the Eucharist? Is there a legitimate non-Catholic understanding to this sacrament as taught in the Gospels? Jesus seemed pretty clear about it.

Peace,
Joe

P.S. Good for you to look into these things. But beware of false teachers, as there are many. God be with you on your journey:)
THey think that only the people in the 144,000 (the ones going to heaven) should take part in eating the bread and wine. Every one else just passes it. They do it once a year.

Is this the passage you’re referring too?

There was another Lazarus that Christ spoke about. It was clear that there were two different places in that story.
I am not sure were it is right now here is a few other vrs. the JWs use to support their thought. Ezek. 18:4, 20
Ps. 146:4

It appears we’re picking ‘pieces’ of the Bible out to support a view. It also appears we would be placing scriptures into a position of contradicting each other.

Who is the great cloud of witnesses over our head, laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us?
Heb 12:1 And therefore we also having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head, laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us, let us run by patience to the fight proposed to us:
Were Elias and Moses no longer of this earth, when they appeared with Jesus?
Mar 9:4 (9:3) And there appeared to them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.
Was Jesus wrong when He told the thief he would be with Him in paradise that day?
Luk 23:43 And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee: This day thou shalt be with me in paradise.
Did the rich man know anything when he spoke to Abraham about speaking to his brothers?
Luk 16:19 There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and feasted sumptuously every day.
Luk 16:20 And there was a certain beggar, named Lazarus, who lay at his gate, full of sores,
Luk 16:21 Desiring to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. And no one did give him: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
Luk 16:22 And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom. And the rich man also died: and he was buried in hell.
Luk 16:23 And lifting up his eyes when he was in torments, he saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom:
Luk 16:24 And he cried and said: Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water to cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame.
Luk 16:25 And Abraham said to him: Son, remember that thou didst receive good things in thy lifetime, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted and thou art tormented.
Luk 16:26 And besides all this, between us and you, there is fixed a great chaos: so that they who would pass from hence to you cannot, nor from thence come hither.
Luk 16:27 And he said: Then, father, I beseech thee that thou wouldst send him to my father’s house, for I have five brethren,
Luk 16:28 That he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torments.
Luk 16:29 And Abraham said to him: They have Moses and the prophets. Let them hear them.
Luk 16:30 But he said: No, father Abraham: but if one went to them from the dead, they will do penance.
Read Revelation 6:9-11, 20:4
Wis 3:1 But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and the torment of death shall not touch them.
Wis 3:2 In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: and their departure was taken for misery:
Wis 3:3 And their going away from us, for utter destruction: but they are in peace.
Wis 3:4 And though in the sight of men they suffered torments, their hope is full of immortality.
Wis 3:5 Afflicted in few things, in many they shall be well rewarded: because God hath tried them, and found them worthy of himself.
Wis 3:6 As gold in the furnace, he hath proved them, and as a victim of a holocaust, he hath received them, and in time there shall be respect had to them.

Abraham is in heaven? JWs say that no one in the old testament will be in heaven. Wow. i have never seen these scriptures. I have been lied to. Wow. It’s hurtful :(. Wow so people do go to heaven. But what does it mean when it says the dead know nothing?

The dead know nothing? Who are the great cloud of witnesses concerned with our well being? Did the Rich man know anything when he asked if he could warn his brothers?

Scriptures do not contradict themselves. They are misinterpreted at times though. 😉

Hey Lenny,

Here’s one for you.
1Pe 3:18 Because Christ also died once for our sins, the just for the unjust: that he might offer us to God, being put to death indeed in the flesh, but enlivened in the spirit,
1Pe 3:19 In which also coming he preached to those spirits that were in prison:
1Pe 3:20 Which had been some time incredulous, when they waited for the patience of God in the days of Noe, when the ark was a building: wherein a few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water.
If the dead knew nothing, why did Christ preach to those spirits, once he had been crucified and before He resurrected?

It was not intentional. This is why I left Protestantism all together. It has been my experience that I was being led by men and not God - men who meant well, but who just spun an idea from an opinion formed by someone else’s opinion that spun from another’s opinion. The scriptures have begun to make sense as a whole when I study them from the Catholic teachings. The word of God says what it says.

Hey Lenny,

Here’s one for you.

If the dead knew nothing, why did Christ preach to those spirits, once he had been crucified and before He resurrected?
Ok, I know the deadknow nothing and I know the scripture does not contradict themselves I am just curious as to what the scriptures mean when they say the dead know nothing. Obviously it does not literally mean they know nothing out of the things you have showed me using scripture.

I have shown you where the dead had to know something, or else Christ would not have preached to them. What verse are you referring too? We’ll look at it together. 😉

Haha I mean I know the dead know something lol. Lol I am referring to Ecclesiastes 9:5. Sorry. Yes ofcourse the dead do know something I can’t just not believe what scripture says. 🙂

Ecc 9:5 For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know nothing more, neither have they a reward any more: for the memory of them is forgotten.

Ecc 9:5 Know nothing more, viz., As to the transactions of this world, in which they have now no part, unless it be revealed to them; neither have they any knowledge or power now of doing any thing to secure their eternal state, (if they have not taken care of it in their lifetime) nor can they now procure themselves any good, as the living always may do, by the grace of God. Is this where the practice of praying for those in purgatory comes to play?

Is this where the practice of praying for those in purgatory comes to play?
Haha I was just about to ask about that. Yeh how does that work. The belief in purgatory is because only perfect people can get into heaven right. Can you show me scripture on that please? Is purgatory actually directly mentioned in the bible also 🙂 not saying it has to that’s what the church is for. :). You know this is all making more sence. Before when I was interested in the Catholic church I was afraid to ask about scripture on the bible because I was afraid of what I might hear now I am glad I have asked about it. :). Obviously I was not ready before.

I was always confused about hell & purgatory when I was practicing with the Pentecostals. They don’t believe in purgatory; however, they taught me that Jesus will make Himself known to all, either in this life or “the next”, and we have to accept Him to go to Heaven, or reject him and go to hell. And they spoke of “hell” as a temporary place, and the “lake of fire” as a permanent place. I think all of this came from Revalation.

Yeh I don’t understand that ether. In purgatory dose that mean that we will all be forgiven? Do people really go to hell. What qualifys them to go to hell? Sorry I am taught that there is no hell so it’s hard to understand. :). Sorry for the multiple questions again.

I showed one reference but you must have missed it.
1Pe 3:18 Because Christ also died once for our sins, the just for the unjust: that he might offer us to God, being put to death indeed in the flesh, but enlivened in the spirit,
1Pe 3:19 In which also coming he preached to those spirits that were in prison:

What is the prison that the spirits were in? Is it a place some must stay until the last farthing is paid?
Mat 5:25 Be at agreement with thy adversary betimes, whilst thou art in the way with him: lest perhaps the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer,** and thou be cast into prison**.
Mat 5:26 Amen I say to thee, thou shalt not go out from thence till thou repay the last farthing.
I have a 24 hour shift tomorrow and will try to post more between calls…unless others beat me to the punch. 😉

Two types of sin…
1Jn 5:16 He that knoweth his brother to sin a sin which is not to death, let him ask: and life shall be given to him who sinneth not to death. There is a sin unto death. For that I say not that any man ask.
1Jn 5:17 All iniquity is sin. And there is a sin unto death.
…and nothing unclean shall enter heaven.
Rev 21:27 There shall not enter into it any thing defiled or that worketh abomination or maketh a lie: but they that are written in the book of life of the Lamb
.

A man’s work burn, but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire, like purgation.
1Co 3:15 If any mans work burn, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire.
Paul prayed for his dead friend…
2Ti 1:16 The Lord give mercy to the house of Onesiphorus: because he hath often refreshed me and hath not been ashamed of my chain:
2Ti 1:17 But when he was come to Rome, he carefully sought me and found me.
2Ti 1:18 The Lord grant unto him to find mercy of the Lord in that day. And in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou very well knowest.

Abraham is in heaven? JWs say that no one in the old testament will be in heaven. Wow. i have never seen these scriptures. I have been lied to. Wow. It’s hurtful :(. Wow so people do go to heaven. But what does it mean when it says the dead know nothing?
Yes, the JW’s say no one in the Old Testament will be in heaven. But that is not what Jesus says. Let’s look at Matthew 8:11. “I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.”

Jesus was here speaking to those who followed him, after He marvelled at the faith of the gentile centurion who had asked Jesus to heal his servant. “Not even in Israel have I found such faith!” Jesus here found a gentile who had greater faith than those in Israel itself!

The sons of the kingdom are the hypocritical religious leaders of the day, and people from east and west, gentiles, will be in heaven with the Jewish patriarchs! That is quite an irony. The Jewish religious leaders thought only they would be with the patriarchs, but Jesus says no, gentiles will be there too, and the Jewish leaders may not be.

Jesus says the same in Luke 13:27-29. “But he will say,‘I tell you I do not know where you come from; depart from me, all you workers in iniquity! There you will weep and gnash your teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves thrust out. And men from east and west and from north and south, and sit at the table in the kingdom of God.’”

You see, the Jewish leaders believed that gentiles (non-Jews and Greeks) were unclean, and you shouldn’t eat with them. So for the Jewish leaders it is a tremendous shock to learn that the unclean gentiles, from all directions, will be eating with the Jewish prophets. Imagine! And they themselves might be left out!

So yes, Old Testament people will be in heaven too.

So the dead no longer know nothing? What does that mean? If they are still in heaven would they not know something?
The JW’s dig deep into the Old Testament to find things that seem to contradict what Christians believe, such as at Ecclesiastes 9:5. And they get a lot of mileage out of it.

But do the JW’s quote the whole verse? They usually just show you “the dead know nothing.” But there is more to it, “and they have no more reward; but the memory of them is lost.”

Is it true that the memory of them is lost? Of course not, we remember our dead. And God does too. What does Jesus in Matthew 22:31, 32 say? “And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” So the dead are still living to God!

Also, Matthew 17:3,4: And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with them. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

Peter took it in stride that he could talk to Moses and Elijah! Therefore Peter didn’t think that they knew nothing. And obviously they were not forgotten, contrary to what Eccl 9:5 might be interpreted.

How about a reward? Do the dead get no more reward? Well, Matthew 16:27: Jesus says, “For the son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man for what he was done.” So I guess there is reward after all.

Did the apostle Paul think when he died he would know nothing? He wrote to the Philippians, 2:20-24: “…as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If it is to be life in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me.Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more worthy on your account.”

And he said to the Corinthians, 2 Cor 5:6,8: “So we are always of good courage; we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith and not by sight. We are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”

Did Paul think that when he and the Christians died they would know nothing? No, for to him to die was to gain. According to Paul, when a Christian dies they will be at home with the Lord!

There is also the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, who were dead, but nevertheless were conscious and talking to each other. It is a parable, but a parable must have some basis in actuality otherwise it wouldn’t have any meaning.

So, by comparing scripture with scripture, by looking at other verses, we can tell that the dead definitely are conscious, definitely do have a further reward, and are not forgotten, all contrary to the seeming statement in Ecclesiastes. Therefore, it must have a meaning other than what the Watchtower says.

That is the danger of trying to use Old Testament verses to try to nullify New Testament verses, because the Old Testament does not have the fullness of the NT revelation.

Incidentally, the Old Testament patriarchs did not go to heaven, because heaven wasn’t open yet. The parable of Lazarus and the rich man indicates they went to “Abraham’s bosom.” Jesus was the first fruits to enter heaven. Jesus opened heaven.
