I am a mom of elementary age daughters in Colorado who has been following Jessica Ridgeway’s disappearance and death closely. My husband is in law enforcement here and we knew about the BOLO immediately and he gets regular updates. My heart hurts so badly for this family and it is hard not to hate the awful person who killed this precious little one. Jessica bears an uncanny resemblance to my oldest girl. I have always walked my daughters to and from the bus stop, which is maybe two blocks away, and often wondered if I was just “helocopter momming”. The Friday that Jessica disappeared, I had a 103 degree fever and the flu, so I asked the girls to walk to the bus stop without me. That is the only time I’ve ever done that, and that was the day a girl was abducted. I am just sick, as a mother, that anyone could harm a little girl (or boy, for that matter). I will NEVER miss walking my girls to school again regardless of the circumstances. When I was a little girl, I road my bike all over a five mile radius and explored everywhere (in the Thornton/Westminster area, no less), alone or with a friend–I’m sad I cannot let my daughters have that freedom.

I am so sorry about what happened to you, little Jessica! We pray for your beautiful little soul and will remember you always!

Hello Lifeandhope. I wanted you to know that for this to be in the World News forum it needs to have a news link. That said, have you tried praying for the man who murdered Jessica Ridgeway? Pray for him that he will come to repentance. Maybe this will help you to stay away from hate.

My home is way too close for all this. I’ve been praying and crying all week, as have my friends and their families. And we are praying for the conversion of her killer.

My 8 year old son and I may walk over to one of the candlelight vigils this evening – if I can find a way to tie our arms together… duct tape maybe?

I’m not a stranger to anger, but the feelings I’ve had towards this person border on hate. And that is something I am not familiar with. Though through a lot in life, I have always managed to pray for my enemies. It didn’t even cross my mind with whomever hurt this precious little one.
Am glad you have put that out there as a reminder.

May little Jessica know eternal happiness with Jesus, and may her family find the perseverance and strength to overcome this tragedy.

I did not know that I needed a link to a news story; thank you for pointing that out.

I think you misunderstand my post’s point. Clearly the perpetrator is a deranged, sick individual, but I don’t actually have personal feelings of hatred toward him, nor anyone else for that matter. I said it is hard not to hate, yes, but my horror is due to the fact I have two young, beautiful, vulnerable daughters. I’m sure you did not mean to be condescending, but suggesting I pray for Jessica’s perp does not sit well with me–I don’t hate him, but I am really of the preference to pray for Jessica’s family and the police investigation before I waste time praying for someone who slaughtered the little girl. I’m a mom. In Colorado. Who grew up in the community where this crime took place. Other moms probably get where I’m coming from.

This little girl and her family have been on my heart and in my prayers. Once in a while I read/hear something about modern parents being too paranoid re: kidnapping. I don’t think so.
Such cruelty and heart ache confirms for me there is indeed an all loving just God. This is not all there is. I pray her parents receive consolation of some sort.

I live very near this neighborhood. My son is only eight. The FBI has stated the murderer is probably a white male who is familiar with the neighborhood. So I TOTALLY understand your feelings of empathy with the family and the community. There’s a feeling a darkness in our neighborhood that is just hard to describe.

That all being said… I am praying for the perpetrator of this crime. I am praying that he come to repentance and conversion. Hey, I’ll even pray that God makes him a Saint – because being a Saint requires the brightest possible light being shone on our failings and the damage we’ve caused others in our life. There is no greater penitent than a Saint.

OK, so I’m not actually able to pray that God make him a Saint, though it does appeal to my natural thirst for vengence. But I am praying for him.

In my humanity, I don’t honestly believe he will come to repentance. But Our Lord told us to love and pray for our enemies and those who hurt us – so I need to pray for him.

I have been praying for Jessica and her family, of course, since the Amber Alert was first issued on the 5th.

And please pray for your old community. Our neighborhood is reeling over this, and everywhere you go in Westminster, people are wearing purple, or purple ribbons in her remembrance.

I have two beautiful daughters as well. Nonetheless, I have a criminal law practice in Washington, DC, which at times yields clients charged with various sexual crimes and pedophilia. I maintain a firewall between my personal and professional life. I’m duty bound by my ethics code to represent my clients zealously, so I do my best at all times. By the same token, when I was a federal prosecutor, I prosecuted assigned cases to the fullest extent of the law. These cases are extremely difficult to deal with all the way around. May God bless this kind little girl and her family. :signofcross:

Jessica’s murder is a good example of why I SUPPORT the death penalty. If this human wastrel knew that he wouldn’t live past sunrise if he is caught, Jessica might well be alive. 😦 Rob

 I don’t follow the news to closely, so, I did not hear about the case of this little girl.

 I like to think I’m a pretty tolerant person - concerned more with my own faults than trying to judge others on a constant basis - so, I even empathize (not sympathize) with non-violent pedophiles. Seek help, monitoring, and maybe even commitment to celibacy. Something. Whatever works.

But I must admit I struggle very hard not having the automatic desire violently inflict injury and death upon certain kinds of sinners like active serial killers, violent pedophiles, and people that abduct, torture, or kill children. I don’t say that in any way to be macho or “self righteous.” I honestly feel something physiological in me, some physiological change, pressure, and blind rage that I have this desire…

I just watched this news video on Jessica Ridgeway after reading your post. abcnews.go.com/US/jessica-ridgeway-colorado-community-edge-police-hunt-killer/story?id=17474863#.UHyUX1FAXU0

I don’t know how her parents are handling this. I can’t imagine being in their shoes. That’s a trillion deaths at once.

I remember my first born nephew as one or so years old spending the night over my parents house. I piked him up out of his play pin from crying and slept the night on the couch-bed with him. He curled my hair around one of his fingers for a feeling of security I guess. I slept on the couch-bed with him because I had this great fear of someone breaking to the house through a window and abducting him. I could not bear living if I would have slept through the night while my small nephew was snatched and then vanished. Let alone a horrible violent fate awaiting him. I’d rather all the blood in my body be drained out. Kill me, torture me, take my life but not his.

My nephews are much bigger now - the one is taller than I am - so, I don’t have those same worries. But yeah… when they were little kids I hated them being out of my sight. I guess I terrified my first born nephew as a small kid when I told him to trust no strangers and yell for me if someone came in my parents back yard while he was playing, otherwise the person would snatch him and run off with him. I came running that same day to his screams and tears. Poor kid, a car had driven by in the alley and his uncle (me) had terrified him.

What is wrong with people? Leave the kids alone. I’m not the toughest guy or most courageous guy, so, if you get your kicks off of torturing and killing someone in fear then take me. God will be more tolerant on you if you torture and kill me than if you do that to some innocent and vulnerable child.

I know one of the uncles of Alexis Patterson who disappeared years ago on her way to school. I feel very bad for her. amw.com/missing_children/case.cfm?id=25452

The text book for my forensic anthropology class says child abuse is on the rise and therefore forensic anthropologist must be able to see the telltale signs on skeletal remains of children.

Satan is working overtime in the United States these days. It’s like child abduction is epidemic.

I’ve wondered sometimes… what would I do if I found out my father was a serial killer of women or small children? Or if he once upon a time murdered one or more women of a certain profile or children but then stopped?

And my father is a retired U.S. Federal Agent. I don’t know that I could turn him in or side against him. I wonder at times how one prevents raising a serial killer. I have a few ideas how that is minimized but no certainty. I do think many families revolve around ranting to their kids and each other about politics - political parties - and about rich vs poor or the middle-class and not nearly enough about developing solid, good, character traits and helping to mentor their kids or siblings through the travails of life. Sex and erotic desires need to be discussed and worked through too.

*(The United States may have had a Catholic priest that was a serial killer - he was a suspect in the disappearance, murder, and burial of a little girl. He denided knowing or killing her though. And it’s unclear whether he was at that parish where her remains were later found buried in the floor of the church basement.

One thing is certain is that he developed a sexual fetish for blood - and like killing animals - as a small child. And he killed his female lover, dismembered her body, and disposed of the remains in a New York City River. He was a counterfeiter of U.S. dollars too.)*

I read this book written by a retired cop.

Thanks for the book recommendation! I love true crime… I just ordered this book from Amazon, used for $10 since the new version was $40! I have always been a true crime buff so I’m sure this story will be interesting.

As for praying for the perpetrator of Jessica Ridgeway, those of you able to do so are greater people than I. I feel that my prayer energies must be toward my own little girls and their protection from creepers. I have a whole new attitude about walking them to the bus stop now–I don’t even think twice about it. May God protect all His precious little children.
