Jesuit: “I Am A Religious Atheist”
You know the old expression “kids say the darnedest things?” Well sometimes old Jesuits say the damnedest things.

Perhaps we are at the point where writing about an old Jesuit spouting heretical stuff is like writing “dog bites man,” but let’s have a go shall we?

Wow… these stories never cease to amaze me.

I suppose, in some ways, this adds to my trepidation with the Roman communion. At least among the Lutheran Christians, I wrestle with the devil I know… but in the Roman communion, the devil roaming amongst them is one with which I’m less familiar.

Lord have mercy on us all.

I do not know about his superiors, but I hope that the bishop is not allow him to remain as pastor of his parish. We do not need more wolves in sheep’s clothing among the flocks or, in this case, wolves posing as shepherds.

You got that right!

‘Religious Atheist’? Sounds like an oxymoron to me…🤷 😦

Thank you. There is a school of thought that calls itself “Christian atheism.” They do not believe in God yet adhere to the moral teachings of Jesus. How odd is that?

I do not know for sure, but I think that in Austria a lot of priests think that they can choose their own Bishops. I am not sure that they would listen to their Bishop when they do not even want to listen to the Pope.

We are all sinners with fallen human natures. This priests actions or comments are his and do not reflect upon Holy Mother Church who is the Bride of Christ. He is deceived by the evil one and we must pray for him. But please do not get an individual priest, bishop, etc confused with the Spotless Bride of Christ - Holy Mother Church. You should have no trepidation in the Roman Catholic Church. And as Jesus said “Father that they may be one as You and I are one”.

Although his comments are not orthodox, it seems to me that the Register is badly misrepresenting what the priest is saying. They quote him as denying the “God on high” without also pointing out that he is not denying that God exists, but rather contrasting the idea of a God that is remote and “on high”, with the idea of a God that is part and parcel of our daily lives. It seems to me that the priest is not calling for atheism - he is using the term as a metaphor for rejecting rigid religious interpretations of God. He also rejects how people have portrayed God through the millenia, including in Scripture. So while his views are clearly unorthodox, he is not actually advocating atheism.

Friend,

I do not call into question the ideal to which the Roman Church is called. I know from my own communion, that we often fail to live up to the catholic intentions of our formal confessions, too. We are all, indeed, sinful. And as much as our communions are composed of sinful men and women, the institutions themselves will be tarnished by our failures.

However, I do think it is worth noting, that some Christian communions struggle differently than others, with different kinds of errors in their midst. In Lutheran circles, we tend to break communion with those who espouse open heresy, especially those who are in Holy Orders. Hence, you find multiple Lutheran communions, even in this country, where communions that espouse this same kind of heresy are not in communion with Lutherans who affirm the historic Creeds and the Scriptures. We have our own problems, to be sure, but excommunication of clergy who openly contradict the Scriptures and Creeds isn’t generally one of them (not in the Confessional Lutheran communions, anyway… I won’t speak for the ELCA.)

It strikes me as strange, that groups like the Jesuits continue to challenge core Creedal dogma and the Holy Scriptures, teaching outright heresy, and seem to continue as leaders of Roman Catholic colleges, universities, and orders. I don’t understand that, and it gives me great pause.

Peace to you.

I tried and failed to make much sense of the very badly translated remarks of the priest. I suspect that he is talking about the need to find common ground in order to dialog with modern atheists and is not stating that he himself is an atheist.

I note that the “natural law” arguments so common in Catholic moral teaching are “atheistic”: they presuppose that any rational person can come to the same conclusions by observing the natural world without the benefit of Christian faith. I read his remarks (to the extent that I could make sense of them) to extend this approach to other areas of dialog.

I’m surprised the Fascist Forum “Moderator” and Zionist, Robert Gay, has not reprimanded this thread yet… wait, I know why, nothing critical has been said about Israel and Zionism. 👍
