Jesuits say take word of God to Second Life
ROME (Reuters) - Catholic missionaries have always trekked to dangerous parts of the Earth to spread the word of God – now they are being encouraged to go into the virtual realm of Second Life to save virtual souls.
In an article in Rome-based Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica, academic Antonio Spadaro urged fellow Catholics not to be scared of entering the virtual world which may be fertile ground for new converts wishing to better themselves.
“It’s not possible to close our eyes to this phenomenon or rush to judge it,” Spadaro said. “Instead it needs to be understood … the best way to understand it is to enter it.”
Code:
Second Life is a simulation game where players can create a virtual version of themselves -- an avatar -- and interact with other people in the three-dimensional world.
According to its Web site, it has a population of more than 8 million residents and millions of dollars change hands there every month.
Leave it to the Jesuits! I wonder what St Ignatius would think of this?

I’m sure he’d say along with St Paul that we should ‘become all things to all men (real or virtual) that by all means (we) might save some’.

I think it’s absolutely necessary - there is already a thriving porn industry up and running in Second Life, so a counterbalance and godly example is sorely needed.

Pax tecum!

I think he would think it is a great idea. If there are people that you can evangelize in the virtual game, why would he be against it? He’d probably have them reading the Spiritual Exercises.

Yes, first it was that Devil’s tool, the printing press…
and now this!
😉
Let’s not forget the original sources of the pernicious and infectious fad for using technology to evangelise - the goose-quill pen and the writing desk! :tsktsk:

i don’t get this thread. didnt that priest say dat could be a place for potential converts???

Yes, I think his point is that we should evangelize where the people are. I have no experience with Second Life, but I think he is saying that SL is a fallow field which is ripe for tilling.

Which is a good thing. Is this more than evangalization? Is it possible to hold “virtual masses”, “virtual adoration”, etc…? I know some convents have a webcam for adoration via the computer.

Maybe there will have to be a Bishop appointed for this virtual world if it catches on.

I play Second Life, I mostly hang out in the land’s Benedictine Monastery lol…but it is a region of the net where some souls can use something like that, even from Jesuits (jk haha).

Careful. I didn’t realize until I saw it last week that Sr. Joan Chittister is a Benedictine.

Are there any rules governing Second Life? If a virtual monastery gets desecrated by virtual thugs, is that okay?

oh no i didnt mean that, the monastery is awesome. no problems there at all. It has never been vandalized.

I use to play secondlife but I quit the game, the game was full of sin to much pornography and gambling on it. However now that the Jesuits are spreading propaganda in the virtuel world that makes me want to log back on my account re-create my mafia and rough them up a bit 👍

It’s probably a good idea. Who knows? I don’t have much faith in virtual evangelism any more than I have much faith in what we’re doing here as an evangelism tool. Virtual people make virtual converts, I suppose. Yet, that is where the virtual culture is even as artificial as it is. That may be all we are reduced to. Hey, can we invent virtual bombs and virtual bullets so we don’t kill anyone but virtual people. Then again, perhaps that’s all we are becoming.

I’m too old to get this ‘second life’ thing. If they did get converts on Second Life, would they be converts only in the virtual world, or would their second life conversion carry over to their real life?

They might be Catholic on Second Life, but a Buddhist on First Life.

I hate to say it. But there doing more than many Catholics I know.

Most just pray and that is the WHOLE of there efforts.

Scratch that. Most CLAIM to pray… But when it’s time to take action no matter how small people get worked up.

It sounds like the idea is a slightly more entertainment-oriented version of what you guys do on the board. Get the word out online, then people convert in real life.

Good luck to the Jesuits – they’re gonna need it. I’ve been on the internet, I’ve seen things no man should see. And even I fear to tread the ground of Second Life.
