I know this Hell is a realm of the dead and not a place of eternal damnation. For those 3 days he brought souls there into Heaven? During this time the Hell of eternal damnation existed?

Hell was created for the devil and his demons, so yes it existed. Christ preached the Gospel to the souls in spiritual prison, according to Saint Peter. Interesting revelation that no one other than Peter received - for those who deny Peter as prime.

AFAIK, the gates of heaven were opened when Christ ascended, so those souls had to wait 40 days. What’s that after a few thousand years?

Jesus went down to the place where good souls were waiting for redemption, also known as Abraham’s bosom.During this time, Hell continued to receive damned souls, possibly even Judas and the bad thief on the cross.

Heaven did exist then, and angels there see God face to face!

In the Eastern rite, on the feast of the beheading of John the Baptist, the church says that John went to the dead and proclaimed that he had seen the Christ and their liberation was at hand. He was the forerunner on earth and below the earth.

Heaven is God. Eternal. The angels essentially always worshiped His Countenance. Not until the rebellion in heaven did there exist a need for hell.
