THere are more than 3 threads opened about the cartoon depiction of Mohamed, may God’s peace and blessings be upon him. From posters asking why Muslims cant take a joke, to a call of action for forum users to support them so next time they will feel no shame when they make fun of another religious figure…

I know it has happened before, but i would like to know from users here…what would you do if the Virgin Mary and Jesus, peace be upon them…were depicted in an obscene way? Would you “take it as a joke” and laugh it off? Would you support the people who did it in the name of “freedom of the press”…

We’ve already run into several incidences in which Jesus or Mary have been depicted in obscene ways. What do we do about it? We protest to the appropriate people, and, much more importantly, we pray for them.

We pray that by the very act of such desecration their hearts will be stirred into understanding that they have blasphemed, we pray they will repent and join us in adoring Christ and honoring Mary as they deserve to be.

Many a person who set out to mock Christ and Mary has ended up loving them because when they challenge God in that way, he shows them even more compassion and forgiveness, and if they want to accept it, it is theirs with no price to pay except to be faithful to him.

People do it all the time and its usually Christian or agnostics doing it. Yes, there is no accounting for bad taste but to force censorship on this vile stuff would violate our very constitution we hold so dear. I would not even occur to me of blowing up or burning the press room that printed such trash. I cant speak for anyone else however.

Such things happen more frequently than one would like in our society. When they do, many Catholics do protest the offenders, and there are Catholic organizations such as The Catholic League who make it their mission to fight against such things. But this involves words, not physical violence.

If the BVM and Christ Jesus were depicted in some horrible way I would be angry at the person who drew the depiction - without question. I may also respond by writing a letter to the newspaper or other publisher of the depcition. I may also choose to boycott the businesses that use the publication to advertise. I certainly would not choose to support the individual for publishing the work. But I would not scream for the murder of the offender, nor would I riot burn mosques, attack people who share this defiler’s beliefs, or call for the destruction of the publishing company. Nor would my belief in the free market of ideas be shaken by the publication. It is my belief that frank and open discussion of my beliefs will ultimately prove them to be true. I do not have to support the perpetrator to believe in freedom of the press. I guess we just see things differently in this regard.

Around Christmas time on the comedy network, there was a Dennis Leary special. Within five minutes he had made sexual comment’s about Mary, and mocked the virgen birth. I changed the channel, and I dont watch anything with Dennis leary in it now. I feel sorry for him, that he think’s thats the what he has to do to get a laugh, and I wonder who his target audience is, but I mostly forgot about it.

Oh the things that have been done to Mary and Jesus. Half of them we don’t even know about, but do we kill over it. No we either picket or make more sacrificesto make atonement to God for these things. I will never forget the upside down crucifix in a glass of urine and they called this art. SO many many instances but we certainly don’t kill anyone over them. Look at the Consecrated host that was sold on ebay. The man who bought it converted the man who sold it Prayer is the answer to this not murder.

Well it about time we Orthodox and Roman Catholics get together and burn down the comedy clubs, newpaper cartoon departments, and just for fun Hollywood in general. Oh darn… wait a minute we dont do that do we.

Thanks to all those who replied.

Why do you think that when things like that happened, the people who protest are few in number (compared to the number of Christians in the world)

More importantly, do you think that those tactics are working…meaning has Jesus been the topic of insult/“comedy” more or less.

And lastly, would you support a ban on insulting all religous leaders (including ones not of your own religion)? If no, why not. If yes, why? And is that your own opinion or one legislated by your religion.

There was an incident in my city where at a college campus (Catholic at that) where an art exhibit was being held. One of the paintings depicted an angel having sex on an altar which resembled the altar at many Catholic churches. There was a protest and letter were written and even the Bishop was involved. The artist withdrew that painting. Did Catholic riot, burn down the college, shouted for the artist to have their head cut off? No. We did it in prayer and through letters of protest. Now, does this resemble the protest that your fellow muslims, who claims theirs is a religion of peace, are doing througout the world.

You have heard our replies to your question. Please tell us which is the true religion of peace. Please reply and dont walk away the way others have done in different threads.

I hope you guys arent misunderstanding me.

I do not support the rioting, the burning down of places of worship, the killing of human beings…etc. I was surprised by the comments some Christians made on these threads and wanted to better understand their perspective.

By the way, many Muslims *are * protesting in peace.

As to your last statment…Islam is the religion of peace. Internal as well as external peace.

Because we live in a civil society made up of laws that protect such acts, thats why.

No I would not support a ban on insulting all religious leaders because we live in a free and open and democratic system. To do so would cause us to become much like what we see in the Middle east.

Im sure that Jesus would not instruct His followers to take retribution on those who make fun of Our Lord. He would ask us to forgive those folks who did these things. He instructed us to love our enemies. This is sometimes hard to do but it is what we are expected to do if we love HIM. Christ taught two commandments: Love God and to love your neighbor as He loves you.

Just because you say so does not make it true. History and recent events prove you wrong. Clerics calling for war, calling for the beheading and the cutting off of hands. Is this what you call a religion of peace?

Maybe if we are reeaaallyyyyyy quiet we could hear them.

HMMMMMmmmmm, nothing yet, but I will continue to listen for them.

Peace Faith.

I posted elsewhere to help one of your Muslim brothers with this. In our faith, Jesus teaches us to rise above, forgive and move on. He actually goes a step further and says to LOVE our adversaries and enemies. He said (Matthew 5) “Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. REJOICE AND BE GLAD, for your reward will be great IN HEAVEN.” Since we are all weak human beings, most of us cannot get to the REJOICE level of this instruction, but we strive for forgiveness knowing we are the ones who pay the biggest price if we don’t forgive. A Catholic priest was horrifically killed in Turkey today over this, but as painful and difficult as it is for us, we have to forgive the person who committed this crime and even pray for him. Jesus gives us no choice if we want to be with Him.

Of course we are offended by those egregious depictions of the Virgin Mary, the saints, Jesus, etc. But we pity those compelled to make them and we pray for them, and if we have the additional strength given to us from above, we love them somehow. Otherwise, we pay the price. It’s not about them, but our own souls.

Don’t let some idiots enslave you. Don’t empower them. Rise above.

I was just watching the news yesterday, I saw some imams actually step up in front of some angry young Muslims trying to make them stop! Other than that, there are many scholars that spoke out against the violence, saying that it is not in line with what a proper Islamic response should be.

You didnt answer my question.

Would Jesus support a law that banned insulting people?

(Matthew 5) “Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. REJOICE AND BE GLAD, for your reward will be great IN HEAVEN.”

I think this verse answers it pretty clearly. How could we be blessed if it never happened?

There’s been alot of talk about freedom of expression etc. but we also have to remember we all have freedom of will.
